A SMALL YELLOW ENAMELLED OGEE-SHAPED AND FOLIATE-RIMMED BOWL Guangxu iron-red mark, Republic Rising from a short straight foot to a compressed globular body, surmounted by a wide neck flaring towards the lobed rim, the exterior covered with an egg-yolk yellow enamel contrasting with the white interior and base, the base inscribed with a six-character mark in iron red. 9.8cm (3 7/8in) diam. The name comes from the famous verse 'to not sacrifice one's ideals in order to make a living' (äøēŗäŗęē±³ęč °) written by the poet and politician Tao Yuanming é¶ę·µę (365-427), symbolising the idealised noble virtues of traditional scholar-officials.
