An English Civil War Period Pikeman's Armour Mid-17th Century Of iron, comprising a pot helmet with two-piece rounded skull with turned comb flanked by an incised line border, the base of the skull with a line of dome-headed rivets (one missing) between line borders, later plume-holder at the rear, downturned trim (holed at the front) with recessed turned border with rivets en suite, and stamped at the rear with cross of St. George mark, probably a government mark of the Commonwealth period, gorget of two plates each with turned upper border, breast-plate with medial ridge drawn-out to a blunt point above the skirt and with turned borders at the neck and arms, and struck beneath the former with crowned 'IR' mark (James II armoury mark) and armourer's initials 'IW', possibly of Joseph Whorewood or John Wright, back-plate shaped to the back and struck at the neck with further 'IR' mark and combined 'IC' mark, possibly of John Collins, rectangular tassets each of six articulated upward-lapping lames and with recessed turned borders, riveted hinges, and two pivot-hook and pin catches for adjustable shoulder-straps reinforced with riveted plates (old pitting) Footnotes: For more information regarding the maker's marks see Thom Richardson, The London Armourers Of The 17th Century, 2004, pp. 19, 32 and 88 For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com For further information about this lot please visit the lot listing
