Publisher's brownish-purple cloth, covers stamped in blind, spines lettered in gilt, spine ends reinforced, front joint renewed, plain white endpapers. The Voyage of the Beagle, as it is commonly known today 'is undoubtedly the most often read and stands second only to On the Origin of Species as the most often printed. It is an important travel book in its own right and its relation to the background of his evolutionary ideas has often been stressed' (Freeman). Initially published as the third volume of The Narrative of the Voyages of H.M. Ships Adventure and Beagle, it was published using the same sheets with a new title page as a stand-alone volume later the same year, likely to keep up with its popularity and demand.
