Ferneley (British, 1782-1860) The Lambton Hounds at Feeding Time identified in a typed inscription (on the matting board); inscribed in pencil (on the reverse of the matting board); identified on handwritten labels and a typed label (all affixed to the reverse of the backing panel) graphite and ink on papersheet size 17.0 x 22.5 cm (6 11/16 x 8 7/8 in).framed 40.5 x 45.0 x 2.0 cm (15 15/16 x 17 11/16 x 13/16 in). Footnotes: N.B. The pencil inscription on the reverse of the mat reads 'A sketch for the picture painting in 1832 for Ralph John Lambton Esq. The figure by the kennel door is Fenwick Hunnum, the feeder / Engraved in 1833 by R. Parr / See Sir Walter Gilbey's Animal Painters, Vol. 1, page 164'. The typed label on the reverse of the backing panel reads the same. The present sketch is a study for a painting of unknown location. An engraving of the composition was done by Richard Parr (active circa 1832-1839) and reproduced in The Hunting Directory by Thomas Burgeland Johnson (London: Sherwood, Gilbert, and Piper, 1830).
