Follower of Jan Pauwel Gillemans the Elder (Flemish, 1618-1675) Still Life with Fruit, Shellfish, and Oysters unsigned; inscribed 'D.J.' (?) (on a fragment of the old stretcher affixed to the reverse) oil on canvas in a 19th-century carved wood Florentine frame 68.5 x 58.0 cm (26 15/16 x 22 13/16 in). framed 85.0 x 92.0 x 5.0 cm (33 1/2 x 36 3/16 x 2 in). Footnotes: Provenance A Newport, Rhode Island, estate. N.B. There are four pictures previously sold at auction that resemble the present picture, all of which are likely copies based on a still life by Cornelis de Heem (Dutch, 1631-1695) sold on 25 April 1951 at the Galerie Charpentier, Paris, from the estate of N.K. Katz, lot 28, plate XI. The first was auctioned on 25 May 1936 from the collection of Dr. L.D. van Hengel at the Galerie Moos in Geneva, lot 67, attributed to Jan Davidsz de Heem (Dutch, 1606-1684). The second was published in 1928 in the magazine Cicerone from the collection of Dr. Benedict & Co. in Berlin with the same attribution. The third was auctioned at Bukowski Stockholm on 4-7 April 1973, lot 153, attributed to Cornelis de Heem (1631-1695) and next auctioned at Sotheby's London on 24 March 1976, lot 73, attributed to Joris van Son (Dutch, 1623-1667). The fourth was sold at Charpentier, Paris, on 28 March 1955, lot 57, as after Cornelis de Heem. Each of these examples bears subtle differences from the present lot. This work has been examined via digital images by the Netherlands Institute for Art History (RKD). RKD scholars suggest an attribution to a follower of Jan Pauwel van Gillemans.
