Ming Dynasty, 1368-1644 A.D. or later. Modelled on a rectangular base, the horse standing in harness and with a long saddlecloth; the rider modelled seated in the saddle, arms held before the body, holding cymbals. Cf. The Barakat Gallery, Chinese Art, Ming Dynasty 1368 AD-1644 AD, London (without year of publication), no.H.952 for similar 1.65 kg, 30.5 cm high (12 in.). Ex North Yorkshire, UK, collection, 1990s.The finest of ceramic figures during the Ming Dynasty have a simplicity and compactness of modelling that makes them extremely impressive. Far greater freedom of movement was possible in ceramic sculpture, which now lent an air of gaiety and splendour already glittering with yellow, blue, and green tiles. Boldly conceived figures of men and horses in green-and-brown-glazed terracotta (liu-li) are splendid examples of the confident manner in which Ming craftsmen revived and transformed the style of the Tang Dynasty. These attendants on horseback are excellent examples of Ming Dynasty tomb pottery. The glazed sculptures were placed in burial chambers in order to flaunt social status, wealth, and power.
A SMALL FAMILLE ROSE ‘HUNDRED BOYS’ CUP, JIXIANG RUYI MARK 粉彩《吉祥如意百子圖》杯Please note this Lot is to be sold at No Reserve. 本拍品不設底價China, 19th century. Delicately potted with deep rounded sides rising from a short foot to a gently flared rim. Finely enameled to the exterior with a continuous celebratory scene featuring thirty-eight boys on an Imperial yellow ground. One boy dressed as an official rides a qilin through the crowds accompanied by an ‘attendant’ holding a parasol, while two others hold banners inscribed ‘fulu’ (luck and fortune) and ‘shouxi (long life and happiness), surrounded by a large entourage holding banners and lanterns in different forms including lotus blossoms, phoenix, elephant, and Buddhist lion. Another boy makes his way on horseback as children play cymbals, blow trumpets, and play gongs.Inscriptions: To the recessed base with an iron-red four-character mark, ‘jixiang ruyi’ (may you have auspiciousness and your wishes fulfilled).Provenance: English trade.Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and manufacturing irregularities. Minor losses to enamels and some rubbing to gilt. Touch-ups to pitting at the foot.Weight: 97.3 gDimensions: Diameter 8.7 cm Expert’s note: A multitude of boys at play, aka the 'hundred boys' theme, presents an auspicious wish for many sons. This motif is frequently seen in Chinese art, was particularly popular on famille rose wares during the Qianlong reign, and naturally continued in subsequent reigns. Still, a total of 38 figures painted to such a small cup is a rather large number, definitely larger than normal, thus making this a rare work of art.Auction result comparison: Type: Related through the mark onlyAuction: Sotheby’s Hong Kong, 2 June 2016, lot 823Price: HKD 62,500 or approx. Two hardstone cameo rings, comprising:a gold shell cameo ring, depicting a dancing putto playing the cymbals, with fluttering little wings and wafting voile drapery, in a signet ring setting, tested as approximately 14ct gold. Length of ring head 26mm, 12.52g (1)Ring size Q-R (shank not round)and a gold split pearl and shell cameo ring, an elongated cameo depicting a full length classical female figure standing by a truncated pillar, low collet set to a border of seed pearls, undercut gallery and plain shank stamped '18ct', tested as approximately 14ct gold, length of ring head 23mm, 4.38g (1)Ring size approximately M (shank not round)Condition Report1st ring - The carving is finely detailed, and the low setting allows the layers of banded agate to be appreciated, but the edge of the cameo has multiple small chips and nibbles. The gold has normal wear and tear for age, but is also pocked; and the shank has been re-sized.2nd ring - shank tests for approximately 14ct gold; it has been re-sized, and there is evidence of other repair work to the setting - and an accretion of dirt. A great many of the seed pearls are missing, three have been replaced with simulated pearls, and most of those remaining are worn and layered and have lost their lustre.
