Robert Rauschenberg (1925–2008) was an American artist who profoundly influenced the course of 20th-century art with his groundbreaking work in painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, and performance. He is widely celebrated for his innovative approaches to materials, techniques, and concepts, as well as his pioneering role in bridging the gap between Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art.Born Milton Ernest Rauschenberg in Port Arthur, Texas, Rauschenberg studied at the Kansas City Art Institute and the Académie Julian in Paris before attending Black Mountain College in North Carolina, where he studied under renowned artists such as Josef Albers and John Cage. It was at Black Mountain College that Rauschenberg began to develop his interdisciplinary approach to art-making, which would become a hallmark of his career.Rauschenberg's early works challenged traditional notions of painting by incorporating found objects and unconventional materials into his compositions. He famously created his "Combines" series, which blurred the boundaries between painting and sculpture by combining painted canvases with everyday objects such as tires, stuffed animals, and household appliances. In the 1960s, Rauschenberg turned his attention to printmaking, collaborating with master printers to create innovative works that pushed the boundaries of the medium. He also experimented with performance art, collaborating with choreographer Merce Cunningham and composer John Cage to create groundbreaking works that combined dance, music, and visual art.Throughout his career, Rauschenberg continued to push the boundaries of artistic expression, exploring themes such as technology, politics, and the environment. He embraced new technologies and materials, incorporating elements such as photography, digital imaging, and industrial processes into his work.Rauschenberg's influence on contemporary art is immeasurable, and his work continues to be celebrated for its innovation, experimentation, and boundless creativity. He received numerous awards and honors throughout his lifetime, including the National Medal of Arts and the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale.Today, Rauschenberg's work is held in major museum collections around the world, and his legacy lives on through the countless artists he inspired and the ongoing exploration of his revolutionary ideas and techniques in contemporary art.

David Hockney (English, b. 1937). Mixed media of oil pastel and paint on paper titled "Birthday Card for Grey Gallery" depicting three pairs of rollerskates whirling in a circle, 1980.Provenance: Grey Art Gallery, New York, "David's Evening on Wheels" benefit auction, April 29, 1980; Private Minnesota Collection.Lot Essay:David Hockney grew up in Yorkshire, England, and received his artistic training at the Bradford College of Art and the Royal College of Art, from which he graduated in 1962 after shaking things up by refusing to write a graduation essay, claiming that his art spoke for itself. This self-assured and cheeky attitude has stuck with Hockney throughout his career, helping him launch himself into early international success. Hockney has worked in a wide variety of styles and media throughout his career, including pop art, prints, drawings, paintings, and digital art. He is best known for his eye-popping acrylic pool paintings, done in celebration of his adopted home of Southern California. In addition to a wide-ranging and prolific artistic career, Hockney has also found success as a teacher and a theorist, and has published several well-received monographs."Celia Musing" and "Celia Elegant" are from Hockney’s 1979 portfolio in collaboration with Gemini G.E.L. in Los Angeles. This portfolio consists of portraits of several of Hockney’s friends, a recurring theme throughout his body of work. It also shows his tremendous versatility as a portraitist, with works in a variety of styles and moods. These two works depict Celia Birtwell, a prominent British textile designer and longtime friend and model of Hockney’s. With spare, almost careless lines, he presents a vivid impression of Celia, chic and cheerful, drifting through an elegant home. The tonality of the lines builds the sense of fleetingness in her poses; it seems that she has briefly paused to contemplate the orchid in front of her before moving on through her day.Sight; height: 29 1/2 in x width: 38 1/2 in. Framed; height: 30 1/4 in x width: 39 in.

He would feed materials such as book pages, magazines, and blank canvas through the printer, embracing the imperfections that would result from using unconventional materials. Many of his recent works have used headlines from the New York Times, commenting on times of unrest and unease politically and socially. Some of the front pages have been halved or split down the center, signally a rift within the country when juxtaposed with pictures of violence and headlines of recent events.Guyton has exhibited at the Whitney Museum of Art, Kunsthaus Bregenz, Kunsthalle Zurich, as well as the Venice Biennale.Sight; height: 16 1/4 in x width: 11 3/4 in. In addition to being the Managing Director of Coriander Studio, he has taught printmaking as a visiting lecturer at various art schools including St Martins College of Art and Design, West Sussex College of Art (Farnham), and the Royal Academy of Art. Faine, while teaching at the Royal Academy also had a one-man show in the ever-popular, Coffee Bar Gallery. Tacita Dean (Canterbury 1965 – lebt in Berlin und Los Angeles). „One Negative, Two Suns, Two Moons“. 2019C-Print. 80 × 123 cm (90 × 133 cm) (31 ½ × 48 ⅜ in. (35 ⅜ × 52 ⅜ in.)). Die Arbeit „One Negative, Two Suns, Two Moons“ zeigt eine doppelte partielle Sonnenfinsternis. FvWZustandsbericht: Ex. 5/6. In sehr gutem Zustand. Der Rahmen stellenweise minimal bestoßen und mit leichten Kratzspuren. Sehr schöner harmonischer Gesamteindruck.Wir berechnen auf den Hammerpreis 32% Aufgeld.

It has evolved to confront power and war across the globe. The work is made for the street, the gallery, the web, newspapers & magazines, and to lead workshops that develop peoples’ skills and help them express their thoughts on what’s happening in the world through visual means. The work is made as a critical tool that connects to international movements for social and political change. We don’t see the work as separate to social and political movements that are confronting established political and economic systems. We see it as part of those movements, the visual arm of protest. We want it to be used by people as a part of their own activism, not just as pictures on the wall to contemplate. To facilitate this, as well as selling our limited edition prints on the site enabling us to fund the making of the work, there is a free download page of images with a voluntary contribution to the International Solidarity Movement.

Marc Lagrange (Belgium 1957 - 2015) Exposition  poster 2012 at Atelier Jungwirth  Print on paper 84cm x 59.5cm (33" x 23.5") Lagrange (Belgium, b 1957)was born in Kinshasa, Congo. His career path led him from engineering to photography, and his creativity from fashion to art. Privileging analog over digital, the Antwerp-based Belgian artist searches for intimacy and emotion as opposed to artificial effects. From the color of the walls to the shape of a chair, every single detail counts, underlining Lagrange’s perfectionist streak and his willingness to unfold narratives. He keeps looking for singular subjects and unexpected stories, placing humanity at the core of his approach. Since his sudden death in a car accident in Tenerife in 2015, his legacy lives on through his timeless photographs of boundless sensuality and elegance and his artworks continue to be recognized and honored worldwide.

David Shrigley (British, b. 1968) Untitled (SOME OF MY BEST FRIENDS ARE PIGS) - One of the Four Animal series , 2019 Lithograph prints on paper 2020 Printed by Narayana Press, Published by ShrigShop, Copenhagen Unsigned and unframed  80 x 60cm (31 1/2 x 23 5/8")  David Shrigley was born in 1968 in Macclesfield, UK. He lives and works in Brighton and Devon, UK. In January 2020 the artist was awarded the decoration of Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire or OBE. His digital animations such as ‘Headless Drummer’ and ‘The Artist’ demonstrate what Shrigley calls ‘the economy of telling stories’, delivering a deftly crafted mix of dark and light through the simplest of forms. In his sculptural works, rendered in materials such as bronze and ceramic, the artist makes physical some of his more curious and eccentric propositions by transforming found objects or by playing with their scale. Taking Lewis Carroll's perspective of Wonderland, Shrigley enlarges objects and imbues them with curious proportions.  Shrigley was a Turner Prize nominee in 2013, following his major mid-career retrospective ‘Brain Activity' at the Hayward Gallery, London. In September 2016, his monumental sculpture ‘Really Good' was unveiled in Trafalgar Square, London for the Fourth Plinth Commission. Other solo museum exhibitions include those at Copenhagen Contemporary, Denmark (2020); Newstead Abbey Historic House & Gardens, Nottinghamshire, England (2019); Museo de arte Carrillo Gil, Mexico City, Mexico (2019); Art Omi, Ghent, New York, USA (2019); Spritmuseum, Stockholm, Sweden (2018); Deste Foundation Project Space, Greece (2018); Fabrica, Brighton, England (2018); Rose Art Museum, Brandeis University, Massachusetts, USA (2016); National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, Australia (2014); Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich, Germany (2014); Hayward Gallery, London, England touring to Yerba Beuna Centre for the Arts, San Francisco, USA (2013); Cornerhouse, Manchester, UK (2012); Mumbai Art Rooms, Mumbai, India (2012); Turku Art Museum, Turku, Finland (2011) and Bergen Kunsthall, Bergen, Norway (2009). David Hockney R.A. (British, born 1937)The Arrival of Spring in Woldgate, East Yorkshire in 2011 (twenty eleven) – 19 February iPad drawing in colours, 2011, on wove paper, signed, dated and numbered 17/25 in pencil, the full sheet, framedSheet 1400 x 1050mm (55 x 41 1/2in)Footnotes:The iPad drawings that constitute The Arrival of Spring series by David Hockney might have been received at first with a hint of suspicion when they were introduced in the Royal Academy A Bigger Picture blockbuster exhibition in 2012. Some questioned the choice of the iPad as an artistic tool, others complained about the digital rendering, yet all were taken aback by David Hockney's ability to revolutionise landscape paintings at this stage of his career, embracing the digital revolution of the 21st century. Just over ten years later, The Arrival of Spring iPad drawings have become some of the most instantly recognisable and highly sought-after works in the artist's oeuvre. They have come to define the David Hockney of the noughties, celebrating the Yorkshire landscape by depicting the impact of the incoming Spring from January to June 2011. As an eager exponent of drawing first on an iPhone then on an iPad, David Hockney proved that digital advances were not to be feared but celebrated, praising the iPad as 'a fantastic medium for landscape', helping to capture the rapid changes of light better than any other medium could allow. The strength of these works is also in how they inscribe themselves within an important history of landscape paintings, one especially dear to British art. Constable, Monet, Turner, Claude, Spencer or Van Gogh come to mind and their approach to nature continues to impact an artist who, after many years spent in the Californian sun, became fascinated by the spectacle of the changing seasons, and the English Spring in particular. As such, Hockney further enhances his position as one of the most important artists of our time, continuously challenging the viewers and artworld's expectations of landscape paintings, pushing the boundaries of creation and medium, making art a welcome field for all. The queues to go and experience the first exhibition of his iPad drawings amongst paintings and videos at the Royal Academy in 2012, and the enthusiastic responses said it all. We are thrilled to present the following three works from The Arrival of Spring series in this sale. Each beautifully capturing the landscape, light, and colours of Hockney's beloved birth county, Yorkshire, slowly waking up to Spring. A season many now associate with Hockney's later work. Here, art and nature complement each other at their best, in works that have become just as historically relevant to art in the 21st century as those of Constable and Turner. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Zerback, Rainer -- "Pariser Platz, Berlin, Deutschland" from the series "Places of Interest". 2020/printed 2022. Fine Art print on Hanemühle paper. 80 x 120 cm. Label with printed title, therein signed and numbered 1/20 by the photographer in ink on the verso.Rainer Zerback's "Places of Interest" series embraces the reality of popular tourist destinations, turning the flow of visitors into the central focus. Surprisingly, the presence of people in these landscapes enhances their attractiveness. In some respects, they appear more picturesque and engaging than the illusion of pristine, untouched nature and sites. This effect is achieved through harmonious positioning of people in the frame, and in post-processing, digital techniques are employed to organize and intensify the crowds, virtually condensing the reality of these locations. – In near excellent condition with bright colors.Lit.: Günter Baumann/Volkhard Wolf (eds.). Banksy (British, b. 1973) Police Riot Van (Dismaland Gift Print), 2015 Hand embellished digital print in colours Signed in black pen, with unique dedication in black pen Comprising official Dismaland program, exclusive staff wristband and original gift frame. With a copy of the workers payslip. 25 x 18cm (10" x 7") This is one of 52, all of which were gifted to Dismaland stewards from the artist's show Dismaland. Each hand signed and framed by Banksy.  Banksy (British, b.1973 ) is perhaps the most controversial street artist of the modern day. He is famous for his stencilled graffiti works, which appear in public spaces around the world. His use of stencilling developed from a need to complete a work quickly, namely to avoid being caught vandalizing by police. Banksy often uses multi-layered stencils to employ multiple colours, and he frequently incorporates permanent environmental fixtures, such as street signs and architectural elements, into his work. Marked by dark humour, satire, and political commentary, much of his street art has become viral on the Internet. His most notable early work was the result of a trip to Palestine and the West Bank, where he stencilled nine images on the Bethlehem Wall. Despite his stealth presence, Banksy has become a mainstream phenomenon. In 2010 Banksy directed Exit Through the Gift Shop, a chronicle of the underground world of street art, which was nominated for Best Documentary at the Oscars. In 2015, he opened Dismaland Bemusement Park, a temporary exhibition of an inverted, dystopian Disneyland. Although Banksy has continuously emphasized an aversion to the art world through his output, he also produces traditional works on canvas and prints as well as branded merchandise such as t-shirts. His cultural significance, widespread popularity, and, certainly, the mystery of his identity have all contributed to the desirability of his art. According to Sotheby’s Mei Moses, the average compound annual return for Banksy is 8.5%, with 76.5% of works increasing in value. This lot is also sold subject to Artists Resale Rights, details of which can be found in our Terms and Conditions.

Computer based plotter drawing on wove paper. Signed and dated. On the verso signed, dated, titled and inscribed "e.e.". Spot-mounted to mat and underlying mat, framed under glass. - Paper slightly and evenly browned in the mat section. Few, slight finger and studio marks in places. Overall good. Magnificent, filigree print with wide margin. - Epreuve d'essai aside the edition. - Enclosed: Artist's handwritten invoice dated November 20, 1995 to Galerie Claude Dovel, Paris. - Vera Molnar is considered a pioneer in computer-based and digital art. In 1959, before the age of computer technology, she developed the so-called "Machine imaginaire" for recording algorithmic calculations and since then has consistently dealt with the aesthetic possibilities of computer-based art. The present work represents a very early work by Molnar in which she makes use of the so-called plotter technique. Plotters, also called curve recorders, were devices with which technical drawings, vector graphics and diagrams could be produced in series. The work exemplifies Molnar's personal style which characterizes constructivist and mathematical approaches as well as serial experimentation with irregularities in a previously established graphic order.

Rosemary Burn Phone On A Postcard Marker pens and watercolour on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) This lot has been curated by AOAP About Part of my intention is to make unusual the usual; the everyday visual experiences which we all encounter and mostly dismiss as unimportant, not worth a second glance. The works are crafted from moments; those snippets of time from which I can find a story in the background, such as a dripping bath tap and the light carried in the ripples, a fly on the wall, the fleeting expression on a face, a nameless place. For me, these happenings underpin our existence; big events, highs and lows, come and go but the insignificant and fleeting remain and repeat, like a constant hum in the background. The nature of each brushstroke, and the texture of the paint also play an important part in the translation of the seen, into a blurring between the representational and the semi abstract, the patterns which often escape our notice. I work every day searching for an alchemy between paint, subject and moment. When I studied at Chelsea School of Art, I was making sculpture, but the intention behind the work was similar. Works from those times include a bicycle abandoned on its side with its back wheel perpetually turning, so the scene of an accident was kept alive for an infinite length of time, a remote-controlled leg of lamb, a huge flying saucepan which had come to rest skewered by the sword of a swordfish held upright by a fisherman (both plaster casts). Matthew Stone Untitled (1) Inkjet (giclee) on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) This lot has been curated by AOAP About Matthew Stone (born 1982 in London, England) is a London-based artist. He is part of the South London art collective !Wowow!. Matthew graduated from Camberwell College of Arts, London in 2004. He currently stages performances and films. In 2007, his first solo show, entitled "Futurehindsight", took place at UNION in London. In November 2009, Stone topped the arts section in a "Power players Under 30" list compiled by the Sunday Times. Matthew frequently collaborates with FKA Twigs and created the album artwork for 2019's Magdalene. In November 2011, Matthew had an exhibition at Kathy Grayson's "The Hole" Gallery entitled Optimism as Cultural Rebellion, the same name as his blog. Stone has had subsequent exhibitions at the Hole in 2018, 2020 and 2023. Matthew paints with AI. In a uniquely hybrid process, Matthew begins with hand-painted brushstrokes, which he first paints onto glass before photographing and cutting them out to establish a digital archive of individual painterly marks. These brushstrokes then imprint and drape around Stone's virtual 3D models who populate his vibrant and ethereal canvases as painted avatars.   You must not reproduce, duplicate, copy, sell, resell or exploit any works. In doing so, you endanger our relationships with artists, and directly jeopardise the charitable work we do.

Estelle Vera Ocean View VII Oil on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) This lot has been curated by AOAP About Estelle Vera lives by the sea in Deal. Born in the countryside of Switzerland, she probably fell in love with nature with her first cry. She has always enjoyed the freedom of strolling through the woods, climbing trees, lying in the grass and dreaming into the clouds. It has certainly made a strong impact on her journey. After five years of study at the Lucerne School of Art and Design, she was drawn without hesitation to Italy, where she continued studying painting at the Art Academy of Bologna. In the last decade, she discovered very surprisingly her love for still life painting and a parallel journey took its way. At the beginning she enjoyed the playful approach to the overwhelming abundance of colours, perspectives and patterns. The move to the coast of South England brought new inspirations and the conversation deepened. The subtle colours, the sensitive light and the beauty and fragility of the objects found on her walks along the beaches became once more a dive into silence. As an honouring of simplicity and in a slow process paintings emerge filled with great wonder. The inspiring encounter of equal simplicity and complexity in each and every beach pebble fills me with awe, - or as Henry David Thoreau put it: "Heaven is under our feet as well as over our heads."
