Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World as apprenticed in 1743 and gaining his Freedom of the Clockmaker's Company in 1750. He worked from Sweetings Alley and took his brother Peter into partnership in 1770. James Evans is recorded by Baillie as also working from Sweetings Alley from 1773. In 1775 he went into partnership with Robert and Peter Higgs; the firm subsequently moved to Exchange Alley and continued in business until around 1825. The partnership of Higgs and James Evans specialised in producing clocks for the export market - particularly to Spain hence a significant proportion of surviving examples (including the current lot) being annotated and signed in Spanish. Condition Report: The movement is in relatively clean working condition however the strike train sometimes 'miscounts' the hour suggesting that slight adjustment to the rack/snail system is required. The escapement has been changed from verge (with short bob pendulum) to anchor although minimal intervention to the plates has occurred hence the clock would convert back leaving little evidence of the present arrangement if so desired. Movement otherwise is in good original condition but with some re-pinioning. The dial is in good original condition retaining older mellow surface exhibiting some rubbing and discolouration, The minute hand has been restored. The case is in good condition with faults limited to slight rubbing to the ebonised finish (most noticeably to the front door) and some light shrinkage cracking (most noticeably to the superstructure). The rear has a small veneer loss to the lower left-hand corner; the escutcheon plate to the front door is a later addition. Clock has a crank winder and a case key. Condition Report Disclaimer

Lot 149

A VICTORIAN GOTHIC REVIVAL INLAID MAHOGANY BRACKET CLOCK THE DIAL SIGNED FOR JOHNSON, LONDON, MID 19TH CENTURY The twin fuse gong striking movement with anchor escapement regulated by lenticular bob pendulum with holdfast to the shouldered backplate, the 7 inch cream painted Arabic numeral shaped-top dial inscribed Johnson, London to centre, with steel moon hands and subsidiary Strike/Silent dial to arch, the gable-top case with stylised leafy scroll carved decoration over slender cavetto cornice and hinged front with shaped arch glazed dial aperture inset with canted brass fillet bordering the dial within line inlaid surround, the sides with lancet-shaped glazed apertures beneath brass rosette ring side handles and the rear with gable-shaped glazed door set within the frame of the case, on line edged cavetto moulded skirt base with squab feet, (dial re-touched). 48cm (19ins) high, 29cm (11.5ins) wide, 19cm (7.5ins) deep Condition Report: Movement is complete and in full working condition with no visible evidence of alteration or noticeable replacements; a gentle clean and overhaul is advised. The dial appears to retain the original cream ground finish however the black scripted numerals, signature etc has been re-touched therefore dial presents as being in very good condition. We cannot offer any assurances that the signature for Johnson is correct however it is most likely that the current script replicates/is a restoration of the original text. The case is in good presentable condition. The apex of the carved cresting has been restored and there are some very slight shrinkage cracks to the top surfaces. The right-hand side aperture has veneer patch repairs to the edges bordering the glass; the rear door has similar patch repairs and some unevenness to the colour. Faults to the case are otherwise very much limited to minor bumps, scuffs and other blemishes commensurate with age and use.Clock is complete with a pendulum, winder and case key.Condition Report Disclaimer
