An Elers type red stoneware mug, probably early 18th century, of cylindrical form, with engine-turned banded borders and prunus blossom sprigs in the Chinese style, white metal rim, 9cm highNotes: John Philip Elers and his elder brother David were Dutch-born silversmiths who arrived in London in the 1680s. Their unglazed red stoneware was produced at Bradwell Wood in Staffordshire for a short time between 1690 - 1698. This unglazed red body was inspired by Chinese Yixing wares, much of which was then imported by the Dutch East India Company and widely imitated.Condition:In good condition with no damages or repairs. There is a small firing flaw to the side of the upper terminus of the handle. Please see additional images.
A pair of Wood & Sons Burslem "Elers ware" vases with stylised floral and foliate decoration in the Art Nouveau taste 27.5 cm high CONDITION REPORTS Both vases are in need of a good clean. One has a rough mark / slightly heavy scratch to its shoulder area. A rare Elers Brothers red stoneware tea canister, 1690-98, slip cast and moulded in relief in the chinoiserie taste with four panels of Chinamen, ho-ho birds and blossoming foliage, 10.5cm high A similar example is illustrated on the cover of The English Ceramic Circle's 'British Ceramic Design, 1600-2002', (London, 2003), in Marno (Felicity), 'Tea has become a great commodity here': The introduction of tea and the development of its wares, in the ECC's Fire and Form: The Baroque and its Influence on English Ceramics c. 1660-c. 1760, (London, 2013), page 66, and Elliott (Gordon), John and David Elers and their Contemporaries, (Jonathan Horne, London, 1998), figure 3B. Very good condition for its age. Traces of former mounting, its cover now lacking. Slight firing stresses and occasional blemishes. The edges with small surface abrasions and grime. A very small flat chip, apparently contemporary to manufacture.

A George III silver swing handled sugar basket or sucrier, Andrew Fogelberg and Stephen Gilbert, London 1789, slightly fluted navette form with reeded borders, moulded swing handle, engraved armorial for the Elers (or Eller) family, motto 'Gloria Virtutis Umbra' (Glory is the Shadow of Virtue), on oval pedestal foot, 6 3/8in. (16.2cm.) long, weight 10.5 tr.oz. * Top left letter of maker's mark poorly struck but clearly legible - other marks crisp. Armorial a little rubbed. No dents or dings. Good condition.

A very rare Elers Brothers redware teapot and cover, circa 1695After a Yixing original, the cylindrical form slip-cast and lathe-turned, with an overhead handle and short spout, the body decorated in relief with floral sprigs to both sides, the domed cover with three flowerheads and surmounted with an acorn finial, 15cm high (2)Footnotes:John Philip and David Elers were Dutch silversmiths who produced high quality red stoneware at Bradwell Wood in Staffordshire for a brief period between circa 1690 and 1698, their establishment being last recorded in 1697. Their distinctive wares were cast in plaster moulds and the exteriors neatly turned using a lathe, as detailed in a document of 1794 written by Josiah Wedgwood, see Gordon Elliott, John and David Elers (1998), p.18.In the turning of a vessel on a lathe, a cone of either wood or clay is needed to hold the piece while it is spun, and the irregular circular impression to the centre of the base inside this teapot is consistent with this. The crispness of the moulded decoration on this teapot is attributable to the Elers' use of metal dies, as indicated by the slight roughness surrounding these reliefs. An Elers coffee pot with strikingly similar decoration and a comparable acorn finial to the cover was sold by Bonhams on 1 May 2013, lot 2. A lidded jug with similar floral sprigged decoration and an acorn finial is illustrated by Elliott (1998), p.20, fig.4. A heavy George III oval hexadecagonal silver tea caddy with flush fitting lid to ring handle, engraved with coat of arms of Elers to front and motto of 'Gloria Virtutis Umbra' (the shadow of virtue) below. London 1789. By Andrew Fogelberg and Stephen Gilbert. Approx. 453 grams. Est. £1000 - £1500.
A large red stoneware teapot attributed to Elers, 18th century, the thinly and well potted body with applied chinoiserie sprigs of figures and ho-o birds all within a rococo style frame, beneath a ring turned shoulder, foliate capped and reeded handle and spout, pseudo Chinese seal mark to the underside, the tip of the spout with 18th century silver metal repair, 15cmCondition report: The tip of the spout has been damaged and repaired with an 18th? century silver metal repair, some very minor losses to some of the sprigging otherwise in good condition. There are no signs of restoration, inspection under a UV light reveals nothing.
A Nottingham saltglaze stoneware small mug or capuchine, circa 1700Possibly by James Morley, the cylindrical form with a slightly tapered rim and plain strap handle, decorated with two finely turned bands of neat horizontal grooves, with a brown glaze, 6.8cm high, three pad marks to the glazed baseFootnotes:A similar small mug with a lustrous mottled brown glaze was excavated from the Carter Gate Pottery site in Nottingham and is illustrated in Nottingham Salt-Glazed Stoneware 1690-1800, Nottingham City Museums and Galleries (2010), p.34, no.20. Compare also to no.19. A related Nottingham jug dated 1708 is illustrated on p.33, no.17 which has three pad marks to the flat base. Mugs of similar form with finely turned bands have been excavated at Fulham and it is known that John Dwight made similar examples. James Morley was sued by Dwight in 1693 for infringing his patent, see Gordon Elliot, John and David Elers and their Contemporaries (1998), no.7B. A Staffordshire red ware teapot and cover of Elers type, circa 1760/80, with cylindrical body, turned with undulating bands and foliate scroll capped moulded handle, impressed pseudo Chinese seal mark to base. Height 10 cm. CONDITION REPORT: Teapot lid has a very small chip to the rim but appears to be free from any further chips, cracks or flaws. The teapot spout has very tiny nibbles around the rim almost invisible to the naked eye however visible if viewed under a jeweller's loupe. At some time in its life the teapot spout has been broken off near the body and has been reattached. There are no further obvious flaws, cracks or chips visible.
