A WHITE MARBLE FIREPLACE186 cm high, 131cm wideThis carved and antique graffitied fireplace surround is inscribed with the names of medical students studying at UCD in the early 1900s. This chimney piece was most likely located in School of Medicine at 4 Cecilia Street, Dublin 2. Founded in 1855, the Catholic University Medical School (known as the Medical School of the Apothecaries’ Hall) was originally located on Cecilia Street. In 1908, it merged with the Royal University of Ireland and became known as the UCD Medical Faculty. The medical school relocated to Earlsfort Terrace in the 1930s. Notable names carved include Thomas Enright (Spring 1913). Dr. Enright trained in UCD and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland before he served as a Captain with the Royal Army Medical Corps in World War I. He died in 1918 after the German forces attacked the Royal Munster Fusiliers of the 10th Irish Division in Serbia. Today he lies in the Salonika Military Cemetery.

Set amidst the stunning scenery of iconic mountains, lochs and beaches. The three-storey house was built in 2013 by the renowned architect, Lachie Stewart, with his distinctive style combining traditional Scottish vernacular with a modern-day twist, to create a visually stunning masterpiece. In addition to its unique design, Inchnadamph House has been sited with the greatest care to optimise the superlative panoramic views over Loch Assynt, across the magnificent range of peaks of Conival, Breabag, Canisp, Beinn Gharbh and Quinag and down to the coast, where on a clear evening the most spectacular sunsets can be witnessed. Inchnadamph House sleeps sixteen in great comfort. On the first floor, there are three en-suite double bedrooms and a further two double bedrooms sharing a large bathroom. Remnants of old varnish visible under UV to darker tones of left of picture, but a newer glossy varnish in good condition, with minor surface dust.Music Making: The canvas has good tension, with an even picture plane. All keys present. Scattered minor retouchings, with one 0.5cm area of retouching to the dark interior of the fireplace. Daker, mid-brown tones thin. A glossy varnish in good condition with minor surface dust. Both pictures examined in frame.

A couple of small holes to the reverse of the panel, which is held flat in frame. Paint and ground layers stable, no cracking or lifting. There has been minor fresh abrasion/transfer to the upper layers down the right hand side from contact with the rebate. There is what seems to be the imprint of canvas to the sky in the window (see images), highlighted by dirt in the hollows. No major losses apparent, but a line of dark brown opaque retouching to the mid & lower right edge through the fireplace and teapot (see images), and to the bottom two inches of the left edge and a small patch to the top left corner. Slight abrasion, unretouched to the darkest area of the fireplace, and possibly to the wall which may have some slight reinforcing. An even surface and varnish layer, with a slighly milky wipe mark bottom left visible in reflected light. A layer of surface dust.
