1356-1561 King Edward III gold series G fourth coinage pre-treaty period Noble (S 1490, N 1180). Obverse: the king faces us, holding a sword and a quartered shield, standing in a masted ship at sea rigged with three-roped rigging to either side. 'EDWARD · DEI · GRA · REX · ANGL · Z · FRANC · DHY B' around. Reverse: floriated cross with elaborate lis terminals and a small Lombardic 'Є' in the centre, lions and crowns occupying the angles. This design sits within a double tressure of eight arcs with trefoils in the angles between the tressure and a beaded circle. Cross 3 mintmark proceeds a legend that reads 'IHC x AVTEM x TRANCIENS x P x MEDIVM x ILLORVM x IBAT'. Weight: 7.64g. Diameter: 33mm.
A Mediaeval French gilt bronze Missal cover, probably 13th century; with the Crucifiction portrayed in high relief, the surmounting plaque inscribed IHC NAZARENIS REX IUDEORU, flanked by relief cast roundels containing figural representations of the Sun and the Moon, within an integrally cast moulded surround, 16cm high, 14cm wide; later mounted onto crimson velvet and set within a gilt composition frame, 27cm high, 25cm wideProvenance: Written in ballpoint verso is tantalising: PURCHASED SOTHEBY'S 1970. Similar early Mediaeval examples in bronze are very scarce - a 13th century Limoges example held at the Auckland Museum being a rare comparable. The presence of the Sun and the Moon, -the solar lights reminded of universality and God's creation and the two natures of Christ: His divine nature (the Sun) and His human one (the Moon). These can be seen in earlier work, for instance a 12th century German ivory dyptich panel, held at the British Museum.
A George V Silver and Gem-Set Chalice and Paten, by Art and Book Co., London, 1912 on foliage engraved sexfoil base, set with a bright-cut diamond weighing approximately one carat, the baluster stem applied with cherubim and 'gems', the bowl plain tapering, the paten circular, applied with three cabochon turquoise and engraved with the 'IHC' Christogramthe chalice 17cm high, the paten 10.5cm diameter, total gross weight 9oz 1dwt, 282gr (2)Fully marked under base, under bowl and on paten. There is wear to the marks, particularly under the base and on the paten but in general they are still legible. There is some overall surface scratching and wear, consistent with age and use. There are some bruises to the paten. Some of the 'gems' may be later. There is a chip to the diamond.
A Three-Piece Victorian Silver or Silver-Mounted Travelling Communion-Set, by Thomas and William Aston, Birmingham, 1861, each piece plain, comprising a communion-cup; a paten, each with ‘IHC’ Christogram within reeded border and a silver-mounted cut-glass wine-bottle, in fitted green leather-covered case; Together With an associated cruciform stopper, the case 12cm wide, weighable silver 1oz 19dwt, 61gr (4)Fully marked to rim of communion-cup and to edge of paten. The cover of the bottle fixed to bottle so it has not been possible to remove it to see if it is marked inside. There is some overall surface scratching and wear consistent with age and use. There are some chips to the glass bottle. There are some scuffs and marks to the case.
Edward III (1327-1377), Noble, Fourth coinage, pre-treaty period, London, series G, issued between 1356-1361, sub series Gg/gd, mint mark cross 3, crowned king facing in ship holding upright sword and quartered shield, ships rigging three ropes to the left and one to the right, beaded circle surrounding legend reads EDW?RD DEI GR? REX ?NGL Z FRANC DHYB, single saltire stops both sides. Rev, small lombardic E in centre of a fl oriated cross with lis terminals, lions and crowns in angles all within a tressure of eight arcs, fleurs in spandrels, one annulet either side of the lis ending the top arm of the reverse cross, legend reads IHC AVTEM. TRANCIENS.P.MEDIVM.ILLORVM.IBAT, 7.70g (S.1490; N.1180; Schneider cf. 47). Fully centred strike on good metal, balanced in its detail with pleasing lustrous toning and underlying mint bloom. Slight knot of distortion in the Kings portrait either in the obverse die or from honest wear, legends in the main legible. About very fine, reverse comprehensive.

Circa 15th century A.D. Engraved within a raised segmented border, 'ihc' within crude heart to centre, 'miserere mei deus' around for 'Have mercy on me oh God' (Psalm 51); hook to reverse. Cf. The British Museum's Portable Antiquities Scheme, record id. SWYOR-AC49A6 which similarly bears the sacred monogram, 'ihc' at the centre of a heart and is surrounded by an inscription as yet undeciphered, and SOM-1A6608, which also bears a religious inscription, 'trinitati laus et honor'; types of hook are a characteristic category of Tudor dress accessory used to embellish the hats of high status individuals and are discussed by Gaimster et al. (2002: 169-173). 2.2 grams, 20 mm (3/4 in.). From the collection of a North American gentleman, formed in the 1990s.
