Frederick M. Bayer, Emeritus Curator of the Smithsonian Institutions Museum of Natural History. A marine biologist specializing in soft corals, Bayer knew well Emperor of Japan Hirohito [himself a marine biologist]. Bayer was at the Smithsonian from 1947-1961 and again from 1975-1996 and was a world wide traveler and amassed an extensive art collection.
