A BRONZE JUG, SOUTH ITALIAN, 1st CENTURY A.D., the handle finely cast in relief with scrolling foliage issuing from a female mask and terminating in a lion/leopard head thumbpiece (foot probably replaced), attractive mottled green patina. Height 20cm. Note: Identified by The University and Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle upon Tyne, Museum of Antiquities as most likely to be of South Italian manufacture, 1st century A.D. The letter from the Museum (dated 9th March 2000), encloses illustrations of a similar jug from the Nijmegen Museum collection varying only slightly in the handle decoration. Provence: From a local private collection and, by repute, ex Runciman Collection, possibly originally from Pompeii or a similar excavation.

Solidly constructed of Mahogany and Bronze with white metal mechanism and manufactured by National Automatic Machines in London for the Victory Ex-Servicemen's Club, London and includes receipts for both parties. A Victorian alabaster mantle clock, on footed base with scrolls to sides, surmounted by a gilt metal urn with floral garland, on footed plinth base, white enamel dial, roman numerals, movement stamped 4041, with pendulum and key, approx. 27cm high with a bronze oil lamp, of classical form, on stepped plinth base, the lidded body with three spouts, with wick trimmers, stopper and pin suspended from chains to top, approx. 57cm high (2).

A parcel lot to contain, a Chinese Qing Dynasty bronze miniature vase with seal script mark to base, six Chinese export teacups of various designs, six Chinese saucers of various designs (13). One saucer being Guangxu period, decorated with underglazed blue and famille verte decoration in the form of floral motifs, underside decorated with three bats in underglazed blue, six character mark for Guangxu period to base.

Exhibited Royal Hibernian Academy Annual Exhibition, Dublin 1895 price £21 . Note: John Hughes was a Member of The Royal Society of British Sculptors 1905-1915. He was elected ARHA 1897 and RHA in 1901. He was also appointed Professor Of Sculpture Royal Hibernian Academy of Arts of Painters, Sculptors, Architects and Engravers in 1901. He lived in Dublin but from 1903 also had a residence and studio in Paris.
