[CHAGALL MARC]: (1887-1985) Russian-born French Artist. A good set of two A.L.S., `Marc Chagall´, and `M. Ch¨.´, the autograph letters are written by Bella Rosenfeld Chagall, on behalf of her husband Marc Chagall, two pages each, folio and large 8vo respectively, the first from Bale, Rue St. Jacques, n.d., 1933, and the second from Paris, Avenue Sycomores, 5th November 1939, both to Andre de Ridder, in French. To the first, Chagall states in part `We are at Bale. The exhibition is very well organized and people say it is wonderful. Thank you so much and from deep in my heart for your article. Very deep and human… It would really be a pity that you do not see this exhibition, most of all those items from before war which remained in Germany and have never shown before… The Palais des Beaux-Arts of Brussels has written to me saying that they are strongly intending to move my exhibition to their museum… But now they have changed their mind and have sent a telegram saying they do not want any Chagall exhibition. I am so sorry… I would like so much that my exhibition could be seen in Belgium and in Paris.. What can I do?´ To the second Chagall asks for news form his correspondent, expecting he is keeping well although they are living sad times, and asks `Are people still interested in Art?.. Father Mortion has asked me to participate in his exhibitions in Gant and Anvers with my Bible series works. Are you aware about these exhibitions? Are they strictly catholic? (I am not alas!) I don´t know what to respond. I am flattered that my Bible is of the interest of the Church.. Are you visiting Paris? The city is sad…´. With small remnant of former paper affixing to the upper left edge. G, 2 £80-100Bella Rosenfeld Chagall (1895-1944) Belarusian Writer and first wife 1915-44 of Painter Marc Chagall. The dedicated collector acquired a multitude of books and artworks throughout decades, meticulously labeling and archiving every single item. Many came directly from the most preeminent artists of the time, as well as from their families and estates. He also possessed a vast number of drawings from the famous collection of another avant-garde enthusiast, Nikolai Khardzhiev. After leaving the USSR in 1989 and settling in California, Viktor continued his work as a Soviet art dealer and critic, actively publishing various articles and contributing to several major Russian avant-garde exhibitions across the U.S., such as the 1991 Russia Under Fire in the 40s on the West Coast and the 1992 Guggenheim exhibition The Great Utopia: The Russian and Soviet Avant-Garde. Kholodkov also contributed to the archives of the biggest American institutions. His sophisticated selection of over 2000 Russian sheet music covers was acquired by The Library of Congress, and an extensive amount of material related to VKhUTEMAS is now at the J.
