Eagle/Dan Dare original cover preparatory artwork (1958) by Don Harley for The Eagle Vol. 9. No 49 Phantom Fleet episode. Known as 'Colour Visuals' there are only a few surviving examples, their full and precise artistic detail often as good as the actual finished artwork. Also note that the 'For Pete's sake, look, sir!' word balloon was deleted from the finished artwork, probably due to Marcus Morris's strong religious beliefs. This colour visual is reprinted in Hawk Books No 8 (1993) 'The Phantom Fleet' which is included in this lot along with the original Eagle comic. Bright gouache colours on board. 17 x 13 ins
