A FINE AND RARE 20-BORE POTTET PATENT DOUBLE-BARRELLED BREECH-LOADING PERCUSSION SPORTING GUN BY POTTET, PARIS, with 29 1/4in. browned fine twist barrels signed 'INV.ON POTTET BTE. A PARIS' in gold on the rib, case-hardened boxlock action signed 'INVENTION POTTET' and 'BREVETE A PARIS' respectively in gold within a spray of foliage on each side of the action and with a pierced vent above each chamber, locking-catch engraved with a sunburst, the action decorated with foliate engraving, that on the underside inhabited by a pheasant, well figured walnut stock with chequered grip, iron mounts including trigger-guard decorated en suite with the action (one fore-end finial partially replaced), iron sling eyes, and original brass-tipped rosewood ramrod. Other Notes: Clement Pottet patented his breech-loading firearm and reloadable metallic cartridge system in France on 3rd March 1829 (No. 3930). Pauly was the first to successfully make a firearm that used a reloadable cartridge in 1812. His cartridge used fulminating powder tamped into the centre of a cartridge head to detonate whilst Pottet used a copper cap pressed by hand onto a nipple built into the cartridge head. Pottet's cartridge was in effect a two-piece chamber piece, a short cylinder containing the powder and shot with a separate base with the percussion nipple. Pottet had been a workman for Pauly and his influence is clear on Pottet's designs. To load the gun the mechanism is unlocked and the action and barrels are rotated clockwise through 90 degrees. This releases the barrels which are pulled forward off the face of the action and tilted by 90 degrees with the fore-end coming to rest on a raised stud on the action face. The breech face is hollowed out behind each barrel with a raised bar between forming an enclosed chamber. This was improvement over the earlier Pauly design which were prone to the second barrel being ignited by the flash from the first. For further information see Lewis Winant, Early Percussion Firearms, pp. 123-124 and 263, illus 102 and 228, & I.M. Crudgington & D.J. Baker, The British Shotgun, Volume One 1850-1870, p. 18.
