Blunden, 1652. *** One of the woodcuts depicts "the English Commonwealth as it will be for 3 years or thereabout, viz, in great Majesty and glory"; another, of a soldier riding a bull, "presents the state of England after a few yeares, viz, the soldier tilling the ground, his Armes laid a side, A peaceable time, yet the soldier ever prepared."; and a third, of a woman playing a lute, "This seemes to promise a cessation of all Taxes and all things governed by Love." Turkey.- Rycaut (Paul) The History of the Turks. beginning with the year 1679, first edition, engraved portrait frontispiece and 6 portrait plates, D3 with neat hole cut into margin, 2S3 with short tear at head, L2 to end with worming to upper margin, touching headline and odd letters of 'Contents', scattered faint spotting and staining, later panelled calf, rebacked, rubbed, bumping to corners, [Atabey 1077], folio, for Robert Clavell ..., and Abel Roper, 1700. *** This is complete in itself, but also "forms the third volume of the first collected edition of Rycaut's histories and his edition of Knolles' history of the Turks." (Atabey).
Sheppard (William) Of Corporations, Fraternities, and Guilds, first edition, lacking initial blank, some marginal browning, small hole in I8 affecting pagination on recto and verso, contemporary sheep, rebacked preserving original spine, [Wing S3195], 8vo, Printed for H. Twyford, T. Dring, and J. Place, 1659.*** The first book in English on the law of incorporation. William Sheppard (d. ?1675) , a productive legal writer and successful lawyer was invited to London by Cromwell in about 1653. In 1656 he became a serjeant-at-law and was nominated with three others to prepare the charters granted to town corporations. His subsequent study of corporate law is embodied in the present work, covering not only civic and municipal corporations, but also trades, colleges and universities, hospitals and other similar bodies. Sheppard himself was deprived of his offices at the Restoration and fell into obscurity.

The play is unusual for its sympathetic portrayal of Roman Catholicism, exemplified in the heroine's decision to enter a nunnery rather than marry the man she loves. Provenance: A.N.L. Islip for G. Eld, 1608.

By the most Eminent Hands, first edition, second issue with pasted-on printed slip with new imprint, all after [2]D4 (final 20ff.) present but bound out of order, including publisher's advertisement f., title lightly browned, occasional light foxing, water-stained at head, X3 small hole to foot without text loss, pen trials and contemporary inscriptions to front pastedown, contemporary mottled calf, rebacked with original spine laid-down, [Wing D2315], 8vo, for Thomas Chapman, 1688. *** Made up of sheets of the 1684 first edition printed "for Jacob Tonson", with paste-on slip with new imprint. This is the first in a series of miscellanies published by Tonson between 1684 and 1709, containing many contributions by Dryden.

Brown, 1649. *** First edition of the first English translation of a Sophoclean play, published after the execution of Charles I, with a dedicatory panegyric to his daughter Princess Elizabeth and two appended poems expressing loyalty to the Stuart house and indignation at her treatment. Provenance: ?Philip Bliss (pencil note on front endpaper stating "Philip Bliss' copy" with his ink initials at foot of B1 and ink notes re Milton on verso of front endpaper ?in his hand); Winston H.
