A COMPOSITE NORTH EUROPEAN CUIRASSIER ARMOUR, CIRCA, 1620-30 comprising Flemish cuirassier helmet with two-piece skull rising to an acorn finial at the apex (replaced) and embossed with a radiating pattern of v-shaped flutes decorated at their crests with roping between pairs of incised lines, pivoted peak, flat upper-bevor with broad rectangular recess forming the vision-slit at the upper edge and pierced with characteristic arrangements of ventilation-holes at each side and over the mouth, fitted with bevor and three gorget plates front and rear, the main edges decorated with roped turns and the subsidiary edges with cusped ornament and pairs of incised lines, German collar of one plate front and rear with roped inward turn at the neck, earlier German breastplate of peascod form decorated with tapering roped inward turns at the neck and arm-openings and triple incised lines with central ogees at each border, struck with an early serial number at the neck and with the proof-mark of a bullet, waist-flange carrying detachable tassets of eleven lames terminating just above the knees and extended by a pair of formerly detachable winged poleyns of six lames, the main edges decorated with plain turns and recessed borders and the subsidiary edges with pairs of incised lines, German backplate decorated with roped inward turns at the neck and arm-openings and with single incised lines at the borders and down the centre, the neck struck with an early serial number, the waist-flange fitted with a skirt of three lames, the lower two formed in two halves and the upper struck with an early serial number, and German large pauldrons each of nine lames connected by turners to articulated vambraces each formed of tubular upper and lower cannons and a winged bracelet couter of three lames decorated en suite with the tassets and poleyns (the helmet with light pitting, a small chip at the tip of its peak, larger chips at the left of the upper-bevor and the left of the lower front gorget plate; the skull with a group of small rust holes on the right; one lame of the right pauldron, four lames of the right tasset and poleyn and one of the left all repaired with internal patches, minor defects and repairs throughout, couters almost forming a pair: stand not includedThe helmet belongs to a distinctive group of high quality Flemish armours now mainly preserved in the Real Armeria, Madrid (A 380-401 & 414-21), which can in some instances be identified as the work of the 'Master MP', purchased for Philip IV of Spain in Brussels in 1624 and 1625. See W.J. Karcheski Jr, 1985, pp.307-14. He records helmets similar to the present example and to examples in the Mus,e de l'Arm,e, Paris (H. 150), the Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg (Z.O.3288), the Livrustkammaren, Stockholm (2635), the Art Institute, Chicago (2661), and the Smith Art Museum, Springfield (17.23.9).
A COMPOSITE GERMAN HALF-ARMOUR EARLY 17TH CENTURY comprising zisch"gge with two-piece hemispherical skull embossed at each side with five ribs radiating from transversely-pierced central finial and star-shaped wasaher, its front projecting forward to a broad, round peak pierced at its centre with a rectangular hole to accommodate a sliding nasal-bar attached at the brow by a staple and wing-headed screw, its rear fitted with a plume-holder and a deep obtusely-pointed neck-guard embossed to simulate four lames and decorated with lines of round-headed brass rivets, breastplate of deep peascod shape formed in one piece with an outward-flanged lower edge bearing a pair of broad square tassets (not a pair) each formed of six lames and suspended from a pair of iron hasps and backplate formed in one piece with an outwardly flanged lower edge, the armour coloured black overall and decorated with plain turns at its main edges, the helmet with recessed borders.The cuirass is one of a group formerly preserved in the Tojhusmuseet, Copenhagen. It was transferred there from the Zeughaus in Kempers, Schleswig Holstein in 186?. When the latter was annexed by Prussia. The Armour from the Zeughaus appears to have been of North German make.
AN ITALIAN CLOSE HELMET FOR FIELD USE CIRCA 1580 with rounded one-piece skull rising to a roped medial comb, visor, upper bevor and bevor attached by common pivots with radially-fluted heads, the visor with strongly-stepped, centrally-divided vision-slit, fitted at the right side with a lifting-peg (replaced), the blunt prow-shaped upper bevor pierced at the right side with nine small circular ventilation-holes in rosette formation, the bevor and pierced stud secured at the right side by a swivel-hook and two gorget-plates front and rear, the upper front one repaired with riveted internal patch at right end, the lowest front one restored, the main edges of the helmet decorated with roped turns accompanied, in the case of those of the gorget-plates, by recessed borders, the subsidiary edges with single incised lines (some pitting overall)
A COMPOSITE ITALIAN "SAVOYARD" HELMET EARLY 17TH CENTURY with rounded skull formed in two pieces joined along a low roped medial comb and flanged outwards at its lower edge to form an integral rear gorget-plate, peak, face-defence and bevor attached by common pivots having low domed heads decorated with radiating, incised lines, the lower edge of the peak projecting forward over each eye as an arched flange, the medially-ridged face-defence cut at its upper beneath each eye with a semi-circular notch and over the mouth with a low broad triangular ventilation-hole, the bevor flanged outwards at its lower edge to receive a separate front gorget-plate (lacking four lifting-rivets at the lower edge), the main edges of the helmet decorated with roped turns accompanied, in the case of those of the gorget-plates with recessed borders, the subsidiary edges with single incised lines (pitted overall, minor delaminations)
