- Literatur: David Snelling, in: "The Music Box Journal", Bd. 19, Nr. 1 (Frühjahr 1999), S. 10-12; Bd. 19, Nr. 2 (Sommer 1999), S. 36-38. August 1880 in England patentieren ließ." Start Price: EUR 180 Zustand: (3/3)Cylinder Musical Box with Patented Winding Mechanism by E. Karrer-Hoffmann, c. 1885No. 7304, playing six airs, with 104 teeth in comb (missing six treble tips), zither attachment (without tissue paper), co-axial spring, ratchet-lever with winding gear stamped: "E. Karrer-Hoffmann, Teufenthal, Suisse", walnut case and veneered and inlaid lid, wd. 20 in. (51 cm), cylinder 11 in. (28 cm), playing condition, one governor fan detached, missing Geneva stopwork, dampers in need of attention. - Literature: David Snelling, in: "The Music Box Journal", Vol. 19, No. 1 (Spring 1999), pp. 10-12; Vol. 19, No. 2 (Summer 1999), pp. 36-38. - Note: Karrer & Cie was founded by Rudolph and Hans Karrer in Teufenthal, Switzerland, in 1854. The company was dissolved in 1879. The following year, Rudolph and his wife Elise registered a new business under the name "Karrer-Hoffmann, Elise", with Rudolph as power of attorney. Snelling speculates: "There appears (…) to have been some deviousness when Rudolph dissolved Karrer & (Cie) based on the pretense that Elise was the inventor of the (winding) mechanism which she proceeded to patent in England on August 7th 1880." - The patented winding mechanism necessitated the inverted mounting of the movement seen here, with the comb at the back and the cylinder at the front, in order to allow the ratchet-lever sufficient travel without colliding against the case wall. (The right case divider has been removed to show the winding mechanism in the catalog photograph). - A very unusual movement, worthy of an overhaul. Start Price: EUR 180 Condition: (3/3)

- Referenzen: Frank Nelson, "Rude Mechanicals, a Moving Experience"/https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dVLrzu95IaI; The Music Box, MBSGB, Vol. 14, No. 6 (Sommer 1990), S. 159-162. No! Support her head on a pole like so!", combined ht. of figures 37 in. (94 cm), total ht. 75 in. (195 cm), split in wood on Thatcher’s shoulder, working, with European plug, a safety check of electrical functions strongly recommended. Included is a framed montage of Nelson’s working sketches. - Note: The poor man moves his arms in and out to display his empty pockets, the rich man’s pockets open to reveal his overflowing wealth (pocket movement inactive) while Thatcher beats her fist until, with a look of horror, her severed head rises on a pole. - When the British Conservative government under Margaret Thatcher announced its green paper on poll tax in 1986, Nelson was living in a cottage with rates of less than £ 100 a year. The legislation would create a 650 % tax increase for him overnight. He comments: "So we have Maggie, who supports herself on the rich man, who supports himself by sticking his Guccis into the poor man’s ears". - The automaton offered here was one of two on display at the Museum of Automata in York. - References: The Music Box, MBSGB, Vol. 14, No. 6 (Summer 1990), pp. 159-162; Frank Nelson, "Rude Mechanicals, a Moving Experience", please see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dVLrzu95IaI. Nov. bis 30. Dez. 1995; Andrea Robertson, "Museum of Automata", S. 38. Watch and Listen on:Youtube.com/AuctionTeamBreker Start Price: EUR 15000 Zustand: (3/3)Claude the Clown Musical Automaton by Gustave Vichy, c. 1890Depicting a clown jauntily playing the concertina atop a banded wood barrel, with plaster-composition character head decorated with painted colored discs, articulated eyes, nose and right foot, the going-barrel motor with six cams and single-air cylinder movement causing Claude to turn and nod his head, move both hands and tap his foot as his eyes dart from left to right and his nose moves in and out in time to the music, dressed in checked silk breeches and magenta satin tailcoat trimmed with lace, ht. 26 in.
