Frederick Leslie KENETT (1924-2012) Greece Four photographic prints of sculpture, each studio stamped to verso, 40 x 50.5cm. (4)Frederick Kenett is one of the most important and yet undervalued postwar British artists of the twentieth century. He was invited by the Egyptian government in the sixties to photograph the Tomb and artefacts of Tutankhamen*, and was the first person to photograph the treasures in the tomb housed in the museum in Cairo. He travelled widely in Europe photographing classical scenes and sculptures in Spain, France, Italy, Germany and Holland often negotiating with governments. In the early sixties Kenett befriended Henry Moore and instructed Moore on Photography in return Moore helped Kenett by instructing him on the methods and techniques around sculpting. It was during the early sixties that both Moore and Kennet toured together visiting France and the low countries. Following their time together and from the mid sixties Kenett transferred his skills to sculpture and started producing his own work. Comparing both the sculptures of Moore and Kenett it is clear to see the influence that Moore had on Kenett. Frederick Kenett has been described as ‘Unquestionably the greatest photographer of Sculpture in the World who himself became a scuplture’. The Listener, T.G Rosenthal* Sunday Times Colour Magazine Book Review 1963 Generally, these prints are in very good condition. This is slight evidence of silver mirroring to the extreme edges.

Harold C. HARVEY (1874-1941) In the Meadow Oil on board, signed 64x60cm and 83x79cm including the frame. The vendor was given this charming work by her grandparents who often said she resembled the little girl in the painting. It always hung in the bedroom where she slept when visiting her grandparents as a child in the 1950s.The vendor's grandfather was the noted intellectual and librarian Harry Farr, who during his 32-year tenure was responsible for creating an exceptional library service in Wales. When Farr retired in 1940 the Cardiff City Library Service was recognised as one of the finest in the country and the Central Library as one of the great municipal libraries of Great Britain. It is exciting to think that this delightful painting graced the walls of such a distinguished individual and brought him and his family many years of pleasure. A full conservator's condition report carried out by Alison Smith ACR is available upon request. Her summary is below: "The painting is in very good original condition with no evidence of previous restoration or retouching. The work is unvarnished and was put in the current frame shortly after completion. The frame is also in good condition. Ideally, the gap between the painting and the glazing should be deeper and the glazing cleaned."

Frederick Leslie KENETT (1924-2012) Greece Four photographic prints of sculpture, three studio stamped to verso, 40 x 50.5cm. There are two surface scratches to the image of The Jester, please see images. There is a crease in the lower left corner of the reclining Grecian sculpture image (see image). Each mount board is a little tired.

Robert Borlase SMART (1881-1947) Moonlight on the Grand Canal, Venice Oil on canvas, signed, 65 x 105cm, 77 x 118cm framed. In April 1924, Smart and his wife accompanied George and Minnie Turland Goosey on a visit to Venice. Minnie recorded, “We arrived in Venice at midnight with a full moon turning the place into an artist’s dream of heaven. It was as if it had all been rehearsed and timed perfectly. Around each turn in the smaller canals, we passed other gondolas whose occupants were singing softly, some to the accompaniment of mandolins, and there were those who were silent like ourselves just drinking in the beauty of it all. Moonlight in Venice is wonderful. George told me afterwards B.S., our Artist friend, unconsciously held his hand in a firm grip murmuring, ‘I can’t believe its true, it must be a dream’. This painting, which was hung at the Paris Salon in 1927, aims to capture that moment and is a very daring composition. The condition is good. Canvas, stretcher and paint surface all sound. Some areas of crackelure but nothing to give concern.

John Ellacombe DFC Battle Britain WW2 RAF fighter pilot signed Hurricane photo. 12 x 8 colour hand signed photo. after completing his flying training at 2 FTS Brize Norton, Ellacombe was posted directly to 151 Squadron at Martlesham Heath on 13th July 1940. Never having flown a Hurricane, he was trained on the squadron by P/O FB Sutton of 56 Squadron, who was slightly wounded and non-operational. On 24th August Ellacombe shot down a He111 over Hornchurch. On the 30th he forced-landed his damaged Hurricane near Hundsdon just before the He111 he had shot down crashed in the adjoining field. The next day Ellacombe's aircraft was hit by return fire from a Ju88 and he baled out as the gravity tank exploded. He was admitted to Southend General Hospital with burns. His Hurricane, P3312, crashed at Eastwood, Southend. Ellacombe rejoined the squadron in late December 1940, stayed with 151 throughout 1941 and in February 1942 he was promoted to Acting Flight Lieutenant and posted to 253 Squadron at Hibaldstow as a Flight Commander. He was awarded the DFC (gazetted 7th April 1942). Ellacombe probably destroyed a Do217 on 28th July, co-operating with a Turbinlite Havoc of 1459 Flight. During the Dieppe Raid on 19th August 1942 Ellacombe's aircraft was hit by flak on a ground attack sortie, he parachuted into the sea and was picked up. In July 1943 Ellacombe rejoined 151 Squadron, then at Colerne. He completed his third operational tour with 487 (RNZAF) Squadron, in 2 Group, and was awarded a Bar to the DFC (gazetted 29th December 1944). WW2 Dambuster Raid veteran G L Johnson 617 sqn bomb Aimer signed 12x8 photo. Selected to be part of the specialist No. 617 Squadron RAF, Johnson arrived at RAF Scampton on 27 March 1943. It was at this time that he was due to marry; however, due to the requirements of the training for Operation Chastise, all leave had been cancelled. Johnson appealed to his new Commanding Officer, Wing Commander Guy Gibson, who eventually relented, giving Johnson four days' leave. McCarthy's crew in Lancaster AJ-T (T-Tommy) were detailed to attack the Sorpe Dam, the structure of which differed considerably from the other main targets insofar as it being an earthen dam as opposed to the gravity construction of the Mohne and Eder dams, thus necessitating a completely different type of attack. Like the rest of No. 617 Squadron, Johnson had practised dropping his bomb as the aircraft flew straight towards the target at low level. However, on the afternoon prior to the raid, when the five crews detailed to attack the Sorpe Dam received their briefing, they were told that they had to fly along the dam wall and drop their mine at its centre. It would roll down the wall and explode when it reached the correct depth. The specialist bomb sight developed for the raid would also be of no use. Due to various losses and technical issues en route to the target, AJ-T was the first Lancaster to reach the Sorpe, and McCarthy soon realised how difficult the attack would be. Although there were no flak batteries, the attack would require the aircraft to be flown low across the nearby town of Langscheid, with its prominent church steeple, followed by the aircraft having to drop even lower so the bomb could be released. It was not until the tenth attempt that the crew were satisfied, with Johnson finally releasing the bomb. For his part in the raid, Johnson received the Distinguished Flying Medal. Along with other members of the squadron, he received his medal in an investiture at Buckingham Palace. Good condition. All autographs come with a Certificate of Authenticity. WW2 Pathfinder Henry Shackleton 405 sqn bomber command signed stunning 12 x 8 inch colour Lancaster in flight photo. In 1940 Henry left school and volunteered as a Pilot at the age of 18 and 9 months, receiving his Wings as a Pilot Officer at Cranwell College one week before he was 19. He was then sent to North Battlefield, Saskatchewan as a Flying Instructor . By coincidence his elder brother and sister were born in Saskatchewan, though he was born in the U.K. In 1943, with 1, 500 flying hours, he was posted to Middleton St George, Darlington, U.K. to join the R.C.A.F 419 Moose Squadron where his R.A.F. crew did 18 bombing trips in their Halifax to Germany and Italy without mishap. Thet then volunteered to join Pathfinders and were posted to R.C.A.F 405 Squadron at Gransden Lodge. 4 Pathfinder trips on Lancasters , target Berlin, went without mishap, but on the 5th one on January 30/31st 1944 they were attacked by two nightfighters, resulting in the loss of use by their port wing forcing him to shout "abandon aircraft". His Wireless Operator, Red Williams put on his navigator chest parachute, then decided to get a bar of chocolate from his desk, taking off his parachute to put it in his tunic, then replacing his chute at which he heard an explosion as Henry was blown out of the cockpit . ( He obviously was suffering from lack of oxygen as the Lancaster was in a spiralling dive ) He jumped out of the hole in the cockpit and landed in a Berlin street, immediately taken prisoner . After being blown out, Henry pulled on what he thought was my parachute release, but it was release of his seat harness! When it fell away he searched again and to his relief the parachute opened before he fell onto a bush in a Berlin Park. Henry hid by day and walked by night but on the third night, just after people had come out of their shelter during another bomb attack, some children surrounded him, and he was taken to the Burgermasters house, where kind ladies bathed his face and gave him food. (One could assume they were thinking of their own sons bombing the U.K. and he always feel this should be said.) However, a pompous and drunken Army Officer took Henry to a Berlin police cell (which was warm!) A few days later he met Red Williams at the Frankfurt Interrogation Centre, who told him he had been taken to a crashed Lancaster and understood their other five crew members had lost their lives. Thereafter Henry spent until March 1945, as a P.O.W. in Stalag Luft 3. They all took part in the long march to the Germans last stand in Berlin, from which 400 of them escaped from the Camp across the river to the Americans. Good condition.
