Provenance: Consigned for sale by the author Richard Booth. Gifted to Richard by the artist. Richard has co written books with Bronson, including 'Hell on Earth' and 'Words from the Soul'. Charles Arthur Salvador, 'Charlie', (born Michael Gordon Peterson also known as Charles Bronson), was born 6 December 1952. He is an English criminal who is often referred to in the British press as the "most violent prisoner in Britain" and "Britain's most notorious prisoner". Charlie is one of the highest-profile criminals in Britain and has been featured in books, interviews, and studies in prison reform and treatment. He was the subject of the 2008 film Bronson starring Tom Hardy, a biopic based loosely around his life. Bronson has written many books about his experiences and famous prisoners he has met throughout his incarceration. A self-declared fitness fanatic who has spent many years in segregation, Bronson dedicated a book to exercising in confined spaces. He has also cultivated a reputation as an outsider artist, with his paintings and illustrations of prison and psychiatric hospital life being publicly exhibited and winning him multiple awards. Charlie has 11 Koestler Trust awards for his art and poetry. Some people say the artwork shows the dark corners of a disturbed mind, but supporters say the scenes reflect the events he has witnessed and lived. It is art that has come straight from his soul. It was in 1994 at HMP Wakefield that prison officer Mick O'Hagan encouraged him to take up art, and his lifelong love of art has been his saviour ever since. Charles, who changed his surname as a mark of respect to one of his favourite artists Salvador Dali, is said to have drawn "the madness he has come in contact with." "Nobody condones criminality, but I do believe that offenders can be helped to break the cycle of reoffending. Charlie himself has used his art to help rehabilitate himself. Helping young offenders has become increasingly important to Charles he wants to use his experience to prevent others following the same path" - Richard Booth.

UNITED KINGDOM. Elizabeth II, 1952-. Gold half-sovereign, 2017. Royal Mint. Proof. Commemorating the 200 year anniversary of the modern sovereign 1817-2017, featuring the original design of St. George and the Dragon as made by Pistrucci.Crowned old head of Elizabeth II facing right, wearing the Royal Diamond Diadem crown worn for her Coronation (effigy known as the "Fifth Portrait"). Running continuously around the effigy is the monarch's legend and the date: Elizabeth II · DEI · G Design by Jody Clark. / The reverse depicts an illustration of the legend of St George as the slayer of the dragon, in its original 1817 interpretation. St George is on horseback, advancing to right, wearing a helmet and chlamys (cape, or cloak) fastened in front by a fibula, and holding a broken lance. His left hand clutches the rein of the horse's bridle, and he does not wear armour, other than on his lower legs and feet, with his toes bare. The saint's horse appears to be half attacking, half shrinking from the dragon, which lies wounded by George's spear and in the throes of death. The point of the lance is broken off in the dragon's side. In relief in the left part of the ground line, the artist's initials B.P. (for Benedetto Pistrucci). Surrounding the image, a Garter circlet inscribed with the Order of the Garter's motto, HONI · SOIT · QUI · MAL · Y · PENSE · (from old French: Shame on he who thinks evil). Donald Pass (b.1930), oil on canvas, Portrait of Cherie Hewson, signed, 60 x 50cm with an Exhibition catalogue and a related charcoal sketch, Note: Cherie (pronounced Sherry) was originally from British Guiana, where she met Richard Hewson, who was serving there with the Grenadier Guards. She came over to the UK where they married and lived in Brighton. It is believed they became friends of Donald Pass during his drinking period. Cherie often sang with the big bands at this time. I understand that around that time, he often did paintings to pay his debts. It is not know if this was done as a friend or to pay a debt.
Chris Calle (American, B. 1961) "Home on the Range - Portrait of a Cowboy" Signed lower right. Original watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the U.S. 29c Home on the Range stamp issued October 18, 1994. The character of the West was molded by a wide variety of rugged individualists: trappers, traders, prospectors and enterprisers. But the men and women who gave it permanency were the first settlers. Buying cattle from the Mexicans in Texas, these hardy souls drove the herds northward across the Great Plains to the Rocky Mountains. They built ranches, put down roots and made the land productive. For the most part, they were tough, singleminded business people on horseback who knew how to survive in an isolated, inhospitable region that offered only wild prairie grass and an occasional free flowing stream. They learned how to cope with solitude, failure and backbreaking toil, while battling the hazards of nature and each other. Some survived and some didn't. But many of those who did -- men like Texans Charles Goodnight and Richard King, Wyoming's Francis Warren, New Mexico's John Chisum and Montana's Conrad Kohrs -- became legendary and accumulated enormous power and wealth. The years between 1866 and 1886 were the glory days of Western ranching, when more than 10 million cattle and one million sheep were shipped to markets in the East. Land was cheap -- sometimes even free for the taking. Life was often cheap, too, as cattle rustlers and horse thieves were shot on sight or hanged without a trial. By the 1870s, barbed wire was closing in the open range and newcomers were plowing up the earth. Some cattlemen overextended, overgrazed and overstocked. Image Size: 19.25 x 14.5 in. Chris Calle (American, B. 1961) "WWII - America's First Peacetime Draft 1940" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally used on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 29c America's First Peacetime Draft stamp issued September 3, 1991. One of the most controversial bits of legislation to ever enter the hallowed halls of Congress was the Selective Training and Service Act of 1940. Only after weeks of intense and heated debate did it pass in September of that year to authorize the first peacetime draft in the history of the nation. The new law required men between the ages of twenty-one and thirty-five to register at local draft boards across the country on October 16 -- over sixteen million men registered. Two weeks later, U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt watched as Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson plucked the first number in the draft from a bowl filled with capsules numbered 1 to 8,994. The number was one hundred fifty-eight; 6,175 men across the nation held that honor. Those who were deemed qualified for service were then required to report for duty. Local draft boards classified individuals in more than a dozen different categories. Some were 1-A, meaning "available for military service;" others were classified as 4-F which were rejected as "physically, mentally or morally unfit for service." In all, some sixteen million Americans served their country during the war. Some were volunteers, but the vast majority were drafted under the terms of that controversial act of 1940. Chris Calle (American, B. 1961) "Yellow-Fin Tuna" Signed lower right. Original watercolor on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Federated States of Micronesia Yellow-Fin Tuna stamp issued August 4, 1995. Chris Calle's painting of the Yellow-fin Tuna is one of a set of four of the beautiful native fish of Micronesia. For centuries, Micronesians have thrived on a variety of food fish harvested from the waters surrounding their home islands. Today, commerical fishing companies have also tapped into the region's abundance of aquatic life. One of the most popular fish caught by such operations is the Skipjack Tuna. Particularly prevalent in the Pacific, these creatures are known to grow very rapidly. However, their life expectancy is only about four years. The Yellow-fin, another variety of tuna, has a reputation as one of the most tenacious game fish. Once it takes the bait, this fish fights the angler every step of the way. The Cave Grouper, on the other hand, is relatively secretive. It inhabits caves and crevices such as those found in Micronesia's steep outer reef slopes. Known to be a loner, the Cave Grouper typically travels singly or sometimes in small groups. A more gregarious resident of Pacific waters is the Bluelined Snapper. This fish occurs in large gatherings, particularly around prominent coral formations, isolated reefs and wrecks. Because this snapper feeds at night, it is among the most popular catches of sportsmen who fish during the evening hours. Image Size: 13 x 15.25 in. Overall Size: 14.5 x 22 in. Unframed. (B15148)
Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "American Mink" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood commemorative cover for Balke's Baby Wildlife of the 50 States, postmarked June 1, 1984. In the wilds of Kentucky, baby American Minks playfully follow their mother as she dives for food from their waterfront home. Like their relatives, the otters, the young Minks enjoy sliding down banks, splashing into the water -- warm from summer's sun. As their mother fishes for the crayfish, frogs, salmon and trout that will make up their dinner, the young indulge in noisy, rough-and-tumble mock fights. Another day, the mother and her brood will slink through the tall grass as they silently search for muskrat, or water voles or birds that nest upon the ground. Occasionally, mother will stop, eyes glued to one spot, all senses alert, and pull herself up on her front legs, craning her long neck for a better view of the territory. The youngsters will mimic her, all the while learning the tricks of survival. Finding their prey on the land and in the water, Minks are among the few carnivores who have conquered both. The male Mink, who is twice the size of his female counterpart, may wander long distances, while the female stays near to her babies, within a much smaller range. From February to March, both male and female purr to each other as the mating season progresses. In a few months, five or six kits are born. They remain in their cozy nest for six to eight weeks. Allowed to enjoy their youth, the baby Minks must also learn quickly to hunt and fish. Come Autumn, the family will break up and its members will lead solitary lives until springtime comes to the Kentucky wilderness. Image Size: 11 x 12.75 in. Overall Size: 18 x 20.25 in. Unframed. Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Purple Finch and Lilac" Signed lower left. Original Watercolor on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood commemorative cover for Balke's Birds and Flowers of the 50 States, cancelled June 21, 1985. Not purple at all, the male Purple Finch looks like a large-billed sparrow with a glowing red head. The brownish female is boldly streaked and wears white facial stripes. These small, conical-billed birds are usually most abundant at New England feeding stations in spring, when the red maples are in bloom. Thoreau, who scattered crumbs for these birds at Walden Pond, loved to hear the Purple Finch's rich strains of music and their sharp call note. 'The hearing of this note," he wrote, "implies great improvement in the acoustics of the air." A hardy bird, the Purple Finch has been observed bathing in icy streams in below-freezing temperatures, and singing after a blizzard. If sentiment alone determined the most popular flowering shrub, it might well be the Lilac. There is hardly a person whose memory is not stirred by it, and its scent is one of the most familiar of all perfumes associated with flowers. Lilac flowers grow in panicles, the botanical name for their pyramid-shaped clusters. The panicles grow at the end of the small branches of a shrub or small tree which may reach twenty feet in height. In the spring, Lilac bushes are laden with fragrant clusters of flowers which vary in size. Lilacs have also become runaways and grow along roads and on uncared-for land. They prefer a rich soil but are strong enough to survive almost anywhere. Image Size: 11 x 12.5 in. Overall Size: 19.25 x 21 in. Unframed. (B09608)
Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Rhode Island Red and Violet" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood Commemorative cover for the Rhode Island "Balke's Birds and Flowers", cancelled May 29, 1985. In Adarnsville, Rhode Island, there is a monument to the Rhode Island Red, the famous bird with fan clubs, as far away as India and Australia. Known throughout the world, the Rhode Island Red breed of poultry traces its ancestry back to a farm in Little Compton in the year 1854. This is the hen that gave the poultry industry to the world when it replaced the scrawny barnyard fowl. It is well-known for its succulent meat as well as for high-quality egg-laying. The Red's profile decorates veteran's caps, the doorways of a Rhode Island association of grocers, and is used to illustrate letterheads and programs. When traveling, many of the state's citizens wear a Rhode Island Red lapel pin. Garden Violets are generally hybrids and may be purple, blue, yellow, white, or combinations of these, sometimes with double flowers and heart-shaped leaves. The Violet has long been regarded as a symbol of modesty. Followers of Napoleon, who promised to return from Elba with Violets in the spring, used the blossom as a badge. Various species, particularly the sweet Violet, have been used for perfume, dye, and medicine. Although in winter a Violet seems to disappear, it does not die. The rootstock shrinks, but with the coming of spring it sprouts anew. Violets have five petals, one upper pair and another pair separated by a broader petal. Image Size: 11 x 12.75 in.
