Penny Dreadful is a multi-award winning psychological, supernatural thriller set in Victorian London where classic literary personalities such as Frankenstein, Dr. Jekyll, Dracula and Dorian Gray are brought together with new original characters in an enthralling complex storyline. It was created, written and executive produced by the Academy Award nominated John Logan (Skyfall, Gladiator) along with Academy Award winner Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Skyfall). The series stars Josh Hartnett (Black Hawk Down), Eva Green (Casino Royale), Timothy Dalton (Licence to Kill), Billie Piper (Doctor Who) and Rory Kinnear (Quantum of Solace).
The series was filmed in Ardmore Studios Co. Wicklow and on location in Dublin, and aired its third and final season earlier this year. It was named after the The ‘Penny Dreadful’ magazine which was a huge 19th century publishing success story, initially named ‘Penny Bloods’. They contained stories of adventure, initially of pirates and highwaymen, then later concentrating on crime and detection especially murders. And if there were no immoral real-life crimes in the news at the time, then the writers invented them and the gorier the better.
Philip Murphy – Set Decorator, Production Design Team
The real star of this show is the ‘props’ or property department made up of Jonathan McKinstry (Production Designer), Jo Riddel (Supervising Art Director) and local man Philip Murphy who hails from Newbridge and currently lives in Naas with his wife Teresa and their two young children Sive and Hugh. After attending Newbridge College where he was a prolific try scorer, Philip studied forestry before going to work in 1994 on the film Braveheart in the props department. For a ‘long time’ he honed his craft on award winning films and shows such as ‘Some Mother’s Son’, ‘Saving Private Ryan’, ‘Veronica Guerin’, ‘Ripper Street’ and after three years working in Budapest on ‘The Borgias’, he made the break from Property Master on ‘The Borgias’ to Set Decorator on Penny Dreadful. Teresa, his wife, describes him as a ‘tireless worker’.
But what work! And what a props department! On the day Ashgrove Auctions visited Ardmore Studios to meet with Philip for an overview of the project of selling it all at auction, we were shown sets, warehouses and containers completely filled with antiques, carpets, gilt framed pictures, taxidermies, barrels, crystal, china, chandeliers, books - and that was only the start of it. It was a breathtaking spectacle and difficult to leave.
Philip explained he worked with the vision created by the writer and the production designer, and was responsible for decorating the varied sets in keeping with the characters and period they were representing and delivering an authentic feel without being clichéd. It meant working with a ‘very talented crew’ to decide on, source and deliver every last detail to furnish the sets. One of Philip’s favourites was Sir Malcolm’s Great Room which, although set in late Victorian times, he thought to furnish with Regency and later antiques in keeping with the premise of inherited wealth. To represent the luxury and opulence of Dorian’s ballroom, €250,000 was paid to galleries worldwide for the rights to reproduce almost 150 Old Master paintings which were then housed in period gilt frames which were purchased all over Europe. Wallpaper was imported from Italy. A mile of rope was used in Frankenstein’s lab. Auction rooms and antique dealers were scoured up and down the country and further afield.
