American (Lexington, Kentucky), 20th century. A Chippendale-style mahogany mirror by African-American cabinetmaker and Lexington, Kentucky native Milton T. Paul, Sr. (1922-1988), having a scrolled broken-arch crest centering an urn of flowers and grapes, the sides of the frame with carved and gilded floral moldings, all above a shaped pendant incised with a flowering branch, signed with a hand-carved X on the back of the u.l. corner; ht. 51.5, wd. 24.25 in.
Born in Liberty, Kentucky, Paul, Sr. began making furniture in the 1940s, after attending the cabinetmaking school at Paul Lawrence Dunbar High School. While working for fellow African-American cabinetmaker Earl Brown, Paul, Sr. met Lexington antiques dealer Marie Irvine who asked him to make her a Chippendale-style mirror. After completing a number of commissions for Irvine, Paul, Sr. expanded his business eventually opening a shop on Paris Pike.Ê
