Successful buyers can only claim their purchases upon production of the paid invoice and with the help of a Porter. There are plenty of them. Ask. They will organise the movement of your purchases to the collection area at the top end of the museum building (unless you can carry your purchases). If you have purchased large or heavy items, you can move your vehicle from the car park down to the collection area and you will be helped with loading. Under no circumstances will successful buyers be able to "help themselves" to their items unless a porter is with them. Lots purchased by anyone present at the Auction must be removed from Fawley on the day (unless you have paid by cheque awaiting clearance). Please bring an appropriate vehicle. Nothing can be left at Fawley or taken to Woodford Halse or Sheffield. Items purchased by a cheque awaiting clearance or by absentee bidders will need to be collected from Fawley at noon on Sunday 3rd July. Bring your receipted invoice and an appropriate vehicle, including helpers if your items are large or heavy. Small items can be posted (insured) at cost. Arrange this with Great Central Auctions. We do not post, or send by carrier, any large, heavy or glazed items.
Important Information
Bidding At Fawley
If you attend the auction, on arrival, please hand in your yellow registration card at the cash desk retaining the half with your unique number to be used during the auction to signal your bids.
You may pay for and collect your purchases at any time during the auction, though please allow five minutes after each lot for purchase details to be recorded.
We accept debit and credit card payments at all our sales. Debit card transactions are free of charge, credit card transactions are subject to an additional charge of 2% on your invoice total (this is the charge made to us by the card companies).
Credit card companies can randomly ask us to telephone to authorise your transaction if their security systems identify an "unusual" spending pattern. You may wish to notify your bank/card company that you may be buying and give the date and our company name. We hope that this will avoid any unnecessary delays.
Absentee Bidding
If you are not attending the sale, you have three options detailed below. In all cases, please check the information, the lot number and quote your bidding number.
- You can telephone us on 01327 262193 / 263633 between 10.00 a.m. and 5.00 p.m. up to and including the Thursday before the auction quoting your bidding number. We will then record your maximum bid.
- You can post your yellow bidding form, enclosed with this catalogue, to be received at Woodford Halse by the Thursday prior to the auction.
- Email your bids, quoting your bidding number, before 5 p.m. on the Thursday prior to the auction, with a copy to each of the email addresses above. If you would like an acknowledgment, please tick the box on your computer for an automated confirmation that we have received and read your email. We are happy for you to include bids in the text of your email, you do not need to put them in a separate attachment.
Live Telephone Bidding
To book a live phone bid, please contact us by telephone and we will arrange to call you during the auction. You can then bid live on lots that you are interested in. To use this service you must register as a bidder or already be registered with us and contact us by 5 p.m. on the Thursday prior to the auction quoting your bidding number, lot number of the lots you wish to bid on and a brief description of the item. It is vital that you check the details, we will read these back to you for confirmation.
Phone bidding is available for lots where the catalogue estimate is a minimum £200.
You may leave a maximum figure as a fall-back position in the event that any problems occur with the working of mobile phone networks.

We would ask that you use this facility sparingly, for example if you are suddenly unable to attend the auction for any reason.
Sale Results
Results (with bidding number) will be posted on this website from Monday 20th June. Please check here. Invoices will be posted first class on Monday. Please await invoice and delivery/collection options before contacting us.

Catalogue Notes
- Carriage prints are presented in frames produced in the original style unless specifically stated to be in "original frame", i.e. removed from a carriage.
- Lots described as "repainted" have, in our opinion, been repainted since railway ownership. References to repainted front or back indicate that this side only has been repainted.
- Totems and other enamel signs: (f/f) = fully flanged, (h/f) = half flanged. Enamel signs are deemed to have excellent colour and shine, defects and damage are noted. Where reference is made to edge chipping, this indicates the usual wear caused by the passage of time, as opposed to face chips or other damage sustained in service.
- Item sizes quoted in the catalogue are for guidance only and are not intended to convey the precise dimensions.
- Clocks and watches: Examples of this age often require oiling or adjustment after being moved and installed at a new location. All timepieces offered in this auction appear to be in good, undamaged condition unless otherwise stated and have been wound and run for a short period.
- Posters: are generally rolled with light folds as delivered to stations. If unfolded we describe items as rolled, any significant defects are noted. They are displayed in plastic mounts for viewing. These mounts are not available to the buyer.
- Estimates are an approximation. There are no reserves except that if the more valuable items are deemed by the auctioneer to be under-valued he will not sell them on the hammer. Discussion regarding an offer can follow on the day or on days following.
- Some lots have a RAG reference. This refers to the Railway Antiques Gazette handbooks. Copies of the handbooks, as well as information about the R.A.G. publication will be available at the Auction stall.
- Some lots are not from the Furniss Collection.
Auctioneers
The Auction will proceed without interval. Approx. 90 lots per hour. There are two auctioneers, Ian Wright (formerly of Sheffield Railwayana Auctions, currently auctioneer and consultant for Great Northern Railway Auctions) and Mike Soden (Great Central Railwayana Auctions). Ian and Mike are the UK's most experienced railwayana auctioneers.
Viewing
Viewing of the lots will cease at 11am on Sunday 19th June and the areas closed. There will be no further access to the lots. They will be under strict security.
Payment
On the day, payment can be made by cash (£5000 GBP maximum), cheque (if we don't know you, we will retain the purchases until the cheque has cleared (5 working days)), debit or credit card on the day or by phoning Great Central Auctions during the following week. All cheques payable to "The Furniss Collection".

Terms & Conditions
The Furniss Collection Conditions of Sale
Mrs Kathleen Furniss, Sole Trader, herein referred to as the Auctioneer
1. Bids
All bids made shall be treated as offers made upon these Conditions of Sale and all persons present are admitted to attend a sale on the basis that they have notice of these Conditions. All persons intending to bid must register at the registration desk and if not already in possession of a bidding card obtain one before the sale starts.
2. Ascertainment of the buyer
The Buyer shall be the person making the highest bid which is acceptable to the Auctioneer as signified by the fall of the hammer. In the case of a dispute as to the highest bid during or immediately after the sale of the lot, the Auctioneer may if he thinks fit put up the lot again for sale.
3. Auctioneers discretion
The Auctioneer has sole discretion (a) to refuse any bid, (b) to advance the bidding as he may decide, (c) to decide whether there has been a dispute as to the bidding and under condition 2 to resell the lot in question, (d) to withdraw or divide any lot or combine one lot with another or others, and (e) to exclude any person from the auction room.
4. Reserves and seller's right to bid
Lots put up for sale are subject to (a) any reserve price imposed by the Seller, and (b) the right of the Auctioneer to bid on behalf of the Seller up to the amount of the reserve, but the Seller shall not bid personally on any of his own lots. Neither the Auctioneer nor any person employed at the sale shall bid personally for any lot.
5. Buyer's duties
The Buyer shall at or before the end of the sale (a) pay the full purchase either in cash, or by debit or credit card (subject to any additional charges applicable at the time), or by cheque up to any amount if the Buyer is known to the Auctioneer or by prior arrangement, and (b) subject to condition 6, forthwith clear the lots purchased.
6. Storage and delivery of lots
The Auctioneer will at the request of the Buyer store larger items at Fawley for fourteen days at the Buyer's risk for collection on 3rd July. Any lots left in the possession of the Auctioneer after this time will be subject to a storage charge and if arrangements are not made within one month may be resold without consultation whether paid for or otherwise.
7. Commission bids
The Auctioneer will execute commission bids, free of charge. Bidders should use the form on the yellow card. Commission bids will be executed as cheaply as possible having regard to any reserve and other bids. The Auctioneer shall not, however, be responsible for any neglect or default in executing or failing to execute any commission bid. You are referred to the paragraph "Removal of purchased lots" on page 2 of the printed catalogue. Items not paid for or for which no collection or delivery arrangements have been made will attract storage charges as follows: items under 12" in length or under 2 lb in weight £1 per week or any part thereof; under 302" or 10 lb £2.50 per week; other heavier or bulky items £5 per week.
8. Condition of lots
Subject to condition 11, (a) lots are sold with all faults and imperfections and neither the Seller nor the Auctioneer is responsible for any defects whatsoever; (b) no warranty is given or authorised to be given by the Seller or the Auctioneer with regard to any lot other than that the Seller had the right to sell it; (c) any express or implied conditions or warranties whether relating to description or quality, are hereby excluded.
9. Inspection
Ample opportunity is given for viewing and the Buyer by making a bid, acknowledges that he has satisfied himself fully before bidding, by inspection or otherwise, as to its condition. This includes the physical condition and description, including, but not restricted to, whether the lot is damaged or has been repaired.
10.Catalogue descriptions
The Auctioneer undertakes that care has been taken to see that catalogue descriptions, including rarity, origin and condition, are accurate and reliable, taking into account all the information available when the catalogue was prepared, but these are necessarily matters of opinion only and shall not be taken to be statements of fact. Subject to Condition 11 neither the Seller nor the Auctioneer is responsible for the correctness of any description. Any comments on the catalogue, lots or descriptions should be made to the Auctioneer before the date of the sale and not on the day of the sale, as this provides no opportunity to check any queries.
11.Forgeries
Notwithstanding Conditions 8, 9, and 10, if the Auctioneer receives notice in writing from the Buyer within 7 days of the sale that in the Buyer's opinion a lot is a forgery, and on giving such notification the lot in question is returned to the Auctioneer at his working premises in the same condition as when bought, then if, on considering such evidence as the Buyer supplies to prove the Buyer's assertion, the Auctioneer decides that the lot is a forgery the sale of the lot will be rescinded and the purchase price repaid to the buyer.
12.Property in lots and risk
The Buyer shall not become the owner of any lot, and the Auctioneer shall have a lien thereon, until the Buyer has discharged the purchase price.
13.Default by Buyer
If the Buyer fails to pay for or remove any lot bought by the Buyer or in any other material respect fails to comply with these conditions, the Auctioneer shall have the right (a) to resell the lot by public auction or otherwise without notice to the Buyer, and, if any deficiency arises on such resale after deducting the Auctioneer's full costs and expenses, the Buyer shall be responsible to the Seller and Auctioneer therefor (but any net surplus to be the Seller's) or alternatively, (b) to store the lot at the Auctioneer's premises or elsewhere and to release the lot to the Buyer only after payment in full of all reasonable storage and removal expenses incurred (in addition to the purchase price).
14.Liability of Auctioneer
All persons attending a Sale under the conduct of the Auctioneer shall be deemed to be on the land and premises at their risk and shall have no claim against the Auctioneer in respect of cancellation/postponement of a sale or any loss, accident or injury, however occasioned.
