Jon Joanis Study for Pavillion 2/4, 2023 Acrylic and wax on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) About Jon Joanis (b. Montreal, 1969) spent his formative years learning drawing and painting under the Canadian painter and illustrator Leslie Coppold (Royal Canadian Academy of Arts) while assisting in teaching high school art classes and also briefly apprenticing with Canadian painter Stanley Cosgrove. In 1988, after completing a Fine Arts and Design program near Montreal, Jon had two works selected to represent Canada for a UNESCO exhibition in Paris. Throughout, Joanis studied and performed music professionally as a jazz guitarist, eventually becoming a student of guitarist Mike Stern in New York City, and also studying guitar and composition under Roddy Ellias in Montreal. Over the years, Jon worked as an artist and designer for other artists and special effects companies in Montreal and Los Angeles, painting, sculpting and model-making as well as freelance graphic and interior designing. Jon continues to play and write music, while seriously reacquainting and reconfirming his relationship with drawing and painting. Lisa Golightly Blue Sea and Man, 2023 Acrylic on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) About Lisa Golightly's artistic career began with photography. Her father was a painter, and though she grew up exposed to his practice, she discovered her appreciation for photography at an early age. However, while working on her Fine Art Photography and Photojournalism BFA, she found her way back to painting, developing an artistic practice which marries a deep technical and theoretical understanding of photography with painting. "As straightforward as it may sound, I have fallen in love with the brush, the color, the intimate experience of painting and creating my own world." Today, Lisa's artistic practice still begins with photography. She first scours the internet and estate sales for bundles of anonymous old photography and film. Then, she reframes, rebuilds and reimagines existing subjects of these forgotten photos in the terms of her own memory. She exaggerates light and color in a way that recalls old film photography, painting in pastel, washed out palettes that mimic overexposed film. Working with acrylic, and painting in a distinct painterly style, she references impressionism, pointillism, as well as the oeuvre of Fairfield Porter and Lois Dodd to create paintings that are both anonymous and inherently personal in nature. Lisa's work straddles the line between the familiar and the anonymous, creating an uncanny gray area in which we can all find some part of ourselves, our history or our memory. Lisa further explores the relations between memory, physical distance and the passage of time in this body of work. These paintings are more an exploration of memory than a visual reproduction of film photography. They are a bricolage of truth, interpretation and memory that capture the act of suspending time and the innate flaws in doing so. These works also explore the sense of collective memory, and the universal nature of human experience. Lisa comments that when procuring old photographs, "Strangely, a lot of times it's like 'Oh that could have been my family.' It's fascinating how a lot of images are something we all have, certain things, times or places that we all document similarly." Born in Eugene, Oregon, Lisa Golightly studied at the University of Arizona where she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fine Art Photography and Photojournalism in 1996. Solo exhibitions include Marking Time, George Billis Gallery, Los Angeles, CA (2020), Linda Hodges Gallery, Seattle, WA (2020), Recent paintings, Clove and Creek, Kingston, New York (2018), If Only For A Little While, Good Eye Gallery, Los Angeles CA (2016), and more. Her work has been reviewed in Paper Magazine, Luxe Interior and Designs, The Huffington Post, and The Wall Street Journal. She has participated in art fairs including the Venice Art Walk in Venice Beach, California. Her art was selected for a promotional campaign in London, England in celebration of International Women's Day. She was also chosen to produce an album cover and interior art for musician Alec Lytle. Ji Won Cha Bloom, 2023 Acrylic and coloured pencils on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) About Ji Won Cha (b. South Korea) is an artist based in London. In 2020 she graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design with a BFA in Painting, and is now enrolled on the MA programme at The Royal College of Art. Her paintings use the natural world as a metaphor, this subject becoming a matter for both a celebration of life and contemplation of fear; a subject of spiritual longing but also a subject of technical evolutionary development. The resultant works appear as flows of imagery from a seemingly unconscious mind. Looking at how the landscape shapes our sense of belonging, how it shapes our stories and tales, our behaviours, the works encompass and are embedded with intensity - one being more of a representative study, and the other having a more abstract language, which cannot be easily explained, processed, or measured- through mark making, symbols, and colour. The painting titled "Contemplating the line between perception and reality" was inspired by a quote from Carl Jung, who said, " It all depends on how we look at things and not how they are in themselves. Mountains become places of ascension, inwardness and grace. Desert as indifference. Untamed and wild landscape, in all its apathy, elicits a primal pull to enter it, to be joined with it, to know it intimately. Seeking the solace of empty places, I create intensely personal portraits of quiet, meditative spaces that encourage contemplation, reflection and investigation of self, sublimity and the divine. Richard J. Butler Bowl/Void, 2023 Acrylic, gouache and watercolour on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) About Drawing inspiration from ancient art and mythology, Richard J. Butler's alluring paintings skirt the boundary between figuration and abstraction. Constructed of intricate surfaces built up in layers of grated pastel, acrylic gel and paint, his work often depicts figures and silhouettes that seem to dissolve within vast colour fields. Over the past seven years, the artist has developed a unique technique which consists of pressing large packing blankets onto the still wet painting, a method similar to that of decalcomania. The blankets' vertical lines are transferred to the painted surface, leaving a systematic imprint on the canvas whilst distorting the image. When viewed from a distance, recognisable forms appear while up-close, miniature abstract landscapes abound, creating sensual and hallucinatory surfaces that explore painting's illusionistic potential. Butler's work is held in private collections in the UK, USA, France and Belgium. He has exhibited with Bowman Sculpture, London; Masterpiece Art Fair, London; Modernity Stockholm, London; Hannah Barry Gallery, London; Canopy Collections, London; J. Hammond Projects, London; Kreuzberg Pavilion, Berlin; KARST, Plymouth. Christopher Gee Birch Trees at Night, 2023 Acrylic on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) About Christopher Gee (b.1987) is a British artist from Portsmouth, England. He lives and works on the Thames Estuary, Essex. His small scale works on paper explore stillness and isolated scenes. His paintings are informed by historic houses and landmarks, often forgotten or overlooked sites of familiarity and intrigue. Walking and collecting are key to his practice. His graphic yet naïve-looking paintings, conjure places both historical and imagined, taking us on a fragmented journey through forested landscapes, vernacular architecture, and archaic towers. The intimacy and execution of these paintings convey themes of silence and solitude. His influences include Northern Renaissance painting, Folk Art, the Romantic landscapes of Caspar David Friedrich and the naive paintings of Alfred Wallis. He also takes inspiration from the novels of Hermann Hesse and W.G. Sebald. 'Lie back and think of England' is lifted directly from 'Unruhe' (original canvas found here: ) . This postcard combines clunky error code box and text from Lady Hillingdon's journal (1912). This phrase was used with the addition of 'OK?' to discuss the assertion as well as the current zeitgeist of post Brexit 'Great' Britain and my unease in this milieu. At the time of being asked to make work for this year's auction Brianna Ghey had just been murdered. 'Trans Rights Now' therefore feels especially pertinent whilst hate crimes like this occur and the current Tory government continues to erode civil liberties for the Trans community. Zafiro Storm Bizum, 2023 Oil pastels, tempera, acrylic, watercolour, oil, markers and pencil on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) About My relationship with art is given by the education and passion that I received from my mother's side. It was, has been and always will be the engine of my life. My childhood and adolescence were spent in a very complicated environment. After a major depression, at the age of 17, I decided to enter The School of Art. I graduated in 2001 with honors from the EADT of Catalonia in the specialty of Jewelry Design (1996-2001) Obtaining Honors in the Final Degree Project for "La Escuela Llotja de Barcelona" (School that evaluates all artistic careers in Catalonia, Spain). The same year, 2001, I was the winner of the Illustrious "FAD JEWELRY AWARD" in Barcelona. After obtaining the FAD award, I was selected by BARNAJOYA and the FAD Awards to exhibit at "The BARNAJOYA International Jewelry Fair" 2001. Two years later, in 2003, the DDI (Department of Design and Innovation of the Ministry of Science and Technology of Spain) selected me among the best designers, including me in their guide. My collaborations with artists took place years before, as was the case with the international sculptor Rufino Mesa, with whom I collaborated years before. In 2006 I was part of "NECRO-LITOS" of the como visual artist. For personal reasons. I spent a few years away from art in general, and from my career as a jewelry designer. It was in 2010 when I returned, internationally with my first painting exhibition "The PRINTED FOOTPRINT" at "Art House Gallery and Studios", Brooklyn, NY. I resumed my collaborations as a visual artist in 2015, this time, a participant in "El Milagro" of the international artist Abel Azcona at "The Gray Square Gallery", Spain. And, once again, I was summoned to participate in "DES-ENTERRADOS" by Abel Azcona, curated by Marisol Salanova in the Art Gallery "Conde de Rodezno" Spain in the same year 2015. That same year, I participated in "The 30th Anniversary of the BMW Painting Awards" in Madrid, with the portrait exhibition "FOUR ROOMS" I was interviewed for the Cultural Magazine "ACENTO CULTURAL" in Madrid that same year, 2015, for my artistic career as an internationally renowned artist. interview from which echoed Fahrenheit Magazine, Mexico D.F, publishing my Painting Series in the press "Anthropomorphous". In 2018 I was selected to exhibit the artistic installation FEC (these are the initials of the chemotherapy I received) in the "REG-ARTE" Contest, with the collaboration and within the Malaga Film Festival -MAF-Málaga. Two years later, Saatchi Gallery selected me as a featured artist in the "Saatchi Take Over" competition, London, UK in 2020. In 2021, I became part of the art gallery "Maison Contemporain Gallery" in Paris with my artworks "War Diary". In 2022 I became part of the Perdomo Gallery art gallery in Miami with my artworks "La Triada Combustible". Currently, I am part of the group show CON Spring Edition'23 at the Circle of None art gallery, London and to my delight, I have been selected by Gemma Peppe to be part of the group exhibition of Art on a Postcard Summer Auction 2023, London Exhibition in which I feel honored to participate, for its vital significance, and the great help to the community that is dealing with Hepatitis C. Education Graduated with Honors in Arts and Design specializing in Artistic Jewelry Design from EADT, Catalonia, Spain. (1996-2001) Honors in the Revalidation and Final Degree Project by the "Escuela Llotja" Barcelona, Spain. (2001) Select Exhibitions/Awards Exhibition with "La HUELLA IMPRESA" in the Art House Gallery and Studios, Brooklyn, NY. 2010 Participation in "El Miracle" by the International artist Abel Azcona at The Grey Square Gallery, Catalonia, Spain. 2015 Participation as "DES-ENTERRADOS" by Abel Azcona and Curated by Marisol Salanova at The Art Gallery Conde de Rodezno, Pamplona, Spain. 2015 Participation in The 30th Anniversary BMW Painting Awards, Madrid, Spain. 2015 Interview for the Cultural Magazine "ACENTO CULTURAL" Madrid, Spain. 2015 Press publication in "Fahrenheit Magazine" of the ANTHROPOMORPHE Series Mexico D.F. 2015 Exhibition of the Painting Series, "LA QUE NO TIENE NOMBRE II" (The One with no name II") at The Gallery PÓPULO CADIZ, Spain. APRIL, 2018 Exhibition with the Artistic Exclusive Series Painting "War Diary ·War Portraits/Ukrainian Cities Invaded" at Maison Contemporain Gallery PARIS, France. 2021-2023 Exhibition with the Artistic Exclusive Series Painting "War Diary ·War Portraits/Ukrainian Cities Invaded" at Perdomo Gallery MIAMI. 2022-2023 Exhibition with the CIRCLE OF NONE art gallery in London in the show group CON Spring Edition 2023 Gallery Representation MAISON CONTEMPORAIN / PERDOMO GALLERY / CIRCLE OF NONE Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork My work deals with various political issues such as the energy crisis, climate change, the current Central European war and its derivatives. For the series created, especially for AOAP, I have highlighted the most activist part of the speech. I have shown more clearly the dimension of the female character, the girl. With traits that illuminate the discourse of abuse, protection and the empowerment of reason, but since creation. From the female drive. The one that lies in the exact balance between the rational and the creative. The one that is established whole and without fissures. A character who up to now has lived in harmony with the rest of the work, but who is now shown on the scene and points to the viewer. There are four titles: MY LIMITS, a work that makes use of nature as a protective and defensive barrier. Beauty and strength go together without questioning their symbiosis. I show myself, I am. Full. But I know my true beauty. And that beauty is my limits BIZUM, a work that talks about the immediacy of the use and consequently the abuse of everything that is within our reach. The characters in the play laugh mischievously, in a relaxed but expectant attitude. You could say they are ready. ATOMIC, a work that speaks of the potential and high management capacities in complex situations Change our anatomy and adapt to the environment. Turn our ballast (decayed flower) into a soccer ball with which to strengthen our drive towards better results. PLAY HIDE with THE ELEPHANT in the ROOM talks about the fact of playing hide and seek before such an important issue as evidence. The climate crisis. And playing hide and seek with the elephant in the room is not wanting to see the evidence. If we summarize the language, we find ourselves again, before a type of mistreatment, disaffection and ignorance. You must not reproduce, duplicate, copy, sell, resell or exploit any works. In doing so, you endanger our relationships with artists, and directly jeopardise the charitable work we do.

Melanie Berman Your Heart is my Heart, 2023 Ink, acrylic and pen on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) About Melanie Berman explores the language of abstraction within paintings. She draws from traditional and contemporary techniques and observations. Using the interplay of the paint and the momentum of intuitive gestures to be captured within a time and space that is relevant today. Berman is drawn to the intrinsic values of her materials whilst infusing her work with a personal language and signature palettes. She uses abstraction and colour marks as if it were a universal text full of integrity, in which she features allegories that reflect on social, ideological and emotional planes. References stem from nature, music, poetry, dance that are entwined to suggest alternative possibilities for human life. The non-objective also interests her, as she translates sound into colour and illusionistic forces of connectivity into patterns. In her poetic paintings, loud fluorescent pink or orange flicks contrast with soft, quiet tones. The colours dance amongst themselves to convey a contrasting sense of rhythmic order or disorder, adding to the joyous energy of the work. The marks could be seen as akin to genetic coding or the human perception of nature and our own ecological consciousness. They could also be compared to the pages of a journal or inner landscapes, restoring the balance of collective reasoning in society. Education BA Fashion Design 2.1 Berkshire College of Art 1980 - BA Hons UCA 2008 Select Exhibitions/Awards Most recently she exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy (2020, 2021, 2022) - Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy, London (2019, 2021, 2022). Robyn Graham Knotty, 2023 Watercolour, acrylic and gesso on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) About In paintings ranging from loose representations of nature to entirely abstract, Robyn Graham takes reference from everyday tapestries and the casual adornments of our immediate surroundings. Repetitive compositions bear comparison and act as an invitation to the viewer to reminisce on memories evoked by the physical furnishings or decorative textiles that were once present in their lives. Often overlooked and eventually disregarded the materials that created curtains, tablecloths and bedsheets were ever-present during conversations and relationships, are at the forefront of her work. Both her paintings and drawings a nostalgia for the security and comfort, that these embroidered surroundings once offered. John Heywood-Waddington Ghosts, 2023 Watercolour and acrylic paint on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) About Embracing the traditions and tropes of Western art history, my practice is influenced and informed by poetic and cinematic devices, references and sensibilities. My paintings are about movement, rhythm and intensity of feeling and, though there is a suggested narrative, the viewer is invited to draw their own conclusions. Figures look off into the distance or, with their backs turned, are depicted about to face the unknown future. I prize the materiality and physicality of paint as much as the subject matter. In a sense, the paint becomes the subject. My work usually originates in representational imagery, derived from photo references, collages and drawings - among other source material. There's always the impulse to disrupt and reimagine the familiar through the performative action of painting. Vanessa Brassey Dog Days in Spring, 2023 Acrylic on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) About I am a figurative painter working in acrylic inks and oils on canvas, glass and metal, and academic philosopher. I aim to depict my local world in a way that resists simple naturalism. Beguiling the viewer with landscapes and portraits that resonate with emotional complexity and possibility. My research investigates emotions, memory, and dreaming - an area ripe with open puzzles for the scientific community. They occupy me when I am reading and writing, but also when I am looking and painting. My paintings mirror my experience of the world. Increasingly, I introduce elements of heightened clarity to juice things up and combine this with a mischievous and irreverent use of colour. I blend direct observation with photographic evidence and a bright palette. I want to convey how it feels to be endlessly beguiled and moved by the complexity and possibilities of our shared planet by capturing those transient feelings that make up the quicksilver of our lives. I began showing my paintings during lockdown. Up until then my sketchbooks were just a private sanctuary recording the pull between wild wanderlust and sensible mothering. When I started posting my daily sketches from my walks around Hampstead Heath, it became clear that many shared the passion for the park. With encouragement the sketches developed into in a painted collection where I could experiment with new grounds (metal, boards, wineboxes and so on). My work has been shortlisted in 2022 for the Royal Institute of Watercolour Painters, The Holly Bush Emerging Women Painters Prize, the Jackson Painting Prize, and the Beep! Biannual Painting Prize. I also lecture and teach on the MA Philosophy programme at King's College London, and I was awarded the British Society of Aesthetics Research Fellowship for my project 'Time for Beauty' 2022-3. Straddling both Art & Philosophy, I co-run collaborations with the Tate, National Gallery, and The Photographers Gallery introducing philosophical puzzles to the curious minded in digestible and delightful formats. I see my surrounding in technicolour and enjoy time in the studio processing what I see by blending direct observation with photographic evidence and a bright palette. I started by posting my daily sketches from my walks around Hampstead Heath and it's been a joy to find some many others who share a passion for the park. Christopher Gee Boy at Night, 2023 Acrylic on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) About Christopher Gee (b.1987) is a British artist from Portsmouth, England. Sebald. Laurence Noga Soft Grey Filtered Red (Ronnie Hilton), 2023 Acrylic, Vintage papers and collage on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) About I am interested in peripheral associations and imperfect colour relationships interplayed through an industrial and geometric aesthetic. Personal themes and undercurrents and a sense of history comes from collective and individual memories. Many of the elements in my work are from my father's collection of objects and memorabilia in his garage - hundreds of tools, sheet music, packets, washers, menus, books and photographs. Their selection and use activates an open approach reliant on the environment and experimentation, alongside a human response to the mysterious, and forgotten items and their poetic sense of history. A long term interest in the "Bauhaus' particularly Moholy Nagy, Josef Albers and Paul Klee drives the unpredictability/predictability of the colour handling. These relationships aim to disorientate the viewer, as surface facture is used translucently, or with a sudden density. The colour is often disbursed, or used in compartments, to create a deliberate, and odd depth of field. Education Wimbledon College of Art in 1981 - 4, Byam Shaw (Central St Martins) 1990 -1. I am exploring a personal iconography and phenomenology and how that can be important within both memory and place: such as the look and feel of my mother's musty sheet music collection from her time as a jazz vocalist in clubs and dance bands, or the crumpled menus (some with hand written changes) from the Caprice restaurant that my father worked at for many years. Zafiro Storm 'Play Hide' with 'The Elephant in the Room', 2023 Oil pastels, tempera, acrylic, watercolour and markers on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) About My relationship with art is given by the education and passion that I received from my mother's side. For the series created, especially for AOAP, I have highlighted the most activist part of the speech. I have shown more clearly the dimension of the female character, the girl. With traits that illuminate the discourse of abuse, protection and the empowerment of reason, but since creation. From the female drive. Lucia Jones Lost Myself in Neon Leaves, 2023 Acrylic and gouache on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) About Lucia Jones is a painter based in Wales. Since graduating from Falmouth University in 2014, she has exhibited throughout the UK in solo and group exhibitions including BEEP Painting Prize 2018. Her work is held in private collections in the UK, USA, Austria and Hong Kong. Lucia's work explores the depiction of self and memory through the constructs of paint and film. Her most recent paintings primarily utilise cinematic source imagery from obscure 50s and 60s b-movies as a means to address the intangible nature of memory and the shifting impressions of lived moments. Impersonal and personal all at once, they allude to fragmented space whilst conjuring an internalised or other world; slivers of the imagined and real sit on the surface of the canvas serving as artefacts of the seen and the experienced. Portraits commissioned by HRH Prince of Wales (King Charles) by leading UK portrait painters. 2014 Art Volta. Basel, Switzerland. Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork The painting shows and is named after the 'House of Reeves', an independent furniture store in Croydon south London, run by the same family for over 150 years London. On 8th of August 2011, during the London riots, the store was burnt down. In this painting I used a found photograph showing the store on fire, but replacing the arsonists and rioters with flying saucers, and AT-St Walkers/Tie-Fighters from Star Wars. This work is coupled with another image I did in 2020, made during the Black Lives Matter protests, in which the rioters are shown as they are, and the authorities replaced with Star Wars AT-AT walkers. These kinds of themes are generally very unusual in my work, but give me an outlet for looking at social issues and my interest in sci-fi - creating images that combine cinema, surrealism and social realism. Lisa Golightly Lake Swim (Study), 2023 Acrylic on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) About Lisa Golightly's artistic career began with photography. Zafiro Storm My Limits, 2023 Oil pastels, tempera, acrylic, watercolour, markers and pencil on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) About My relationship with art is given by the education and passion that I received from my mother's side. With traits that illuminate the discourse of abuse, protection and the empowerment of reason, but since creation. From the female drive. Vanessa Brassey The Girl, The Dog and The Flowers, 2023 Acrylic and ink on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) About I am a figurative painter working in acrylic inks and oils on canvas, glass and metal, and academic philosopher. Basically, it's philosophy (without the boring bits) Education Degree in Portraiture Art Academy London (in progress), Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Philosophy researching 'Time for Beauty' King's College London & BSA (2023), PhD Philosophy (2020) King's College London, Masters in Philosophy (2014) King's College London, UG degree in Political History (1994) University of Birmingham Select Exhibitions/Awards The Affordable Art Fair Battersea 2023, The Affordable Art Fair Hampstead Heath 2023, Must Wine Bar Hampstead (December 2022), The Lido Cafe Hampstead Heath (Spring 2022). Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork These postcard paintings mirror my experience of the world. I see my surrounding in technicolour and enjoy time in the studio processing what I see by blending direct observation with photographic evidence and a bright palette. I began painting professionally during lockdown when I opened up my private sketchbooks for the first time on instagram. I started by posting my daily sketches from my walks around Hampstead Heath and it's been a joy to find some many others who share a passion for the park. Born in the coastal town of Asilah in 1936, Mohammed Melehi began his artistic education in the 1950's at the School of Fine Arts of Tetuan. He would then go on to study Art in Spain, Italy, Paris, and America. Upon completion of his studies abroad, Mohamed Melehi returned to Morocco with a view to incorporate a modernist understanding into an exploration of his cultural heritage in 1964. It was in this same year that he began teaching at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts of Casablanca as the Professor of Painting, Sculpture and Photography until 1969. Inspired by architecture and particularly the Bauhaus movement, the geometric forms and angular abstractions encompass Melehi's work in challenging traditional forms of painting and present us with his own artistic vigour and prowess. The vivacious elements of the present work allows the viewer to get a sense of energetic dynamism that Melehi saw as defining life in Morocco. Many of his designs could be concluded as harkening of traditional Moroccan craft, whether that be in textiles, mosaics, or painting. Inspired by these practises, Melehi also used calligraphy and his surrounding nature such as waves and horizons of Morroco to inform his work and arguable the waves that encompassed his coastal origins. The present work displays an evolution from his wave forms that dominate in his works of the 1960s. In much the same way as Jardin Majorelle, Yves Saint Laurent's garden in Morocco, Melehis works typically present a palette of primary or bright, bold colours. Comparatively, it could be said that both creatives were intent on engaging with art in living spaces in Morroco. In 1969 Melehi, along with fellow artists Mohamed Chabâa and Farid Belkahia exhibited works in the lively and historic medina quarter of Marrakesh in rebellion against the art salon hanging style. The ideological concept being portrayed was to allow art to transcend the boundaries of the canvas. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

When talking about his work, he explains: 'The human being is always present. Over the years, the human element has gone through several stages of evolution.'Born in Damascus, Mohamad Omran (1979) graduated from the Department of Sculpture, Faculty of Fine Arts, Damascus University in 2000. He obtained his Master's degree from the University of Lyon and a PhD in art history from the University of Lyon II. Working in sculpture, painting, and sometimes video art, the motif of the tortured human being has been Omran's central theme. Influenced by the war in Syria and his vision of humanity, he has created different series of works, from sculptural busts of distorted faces to depictions of people containing animal metaphors or slouched over drawings of exhausted ordinary people. Omran is able to evoke empathy, disgust, anger and dark humour in his work with a directness and cynicism that fluctuates between violence and lightness. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

The monumental group of works was the subject of an important exhibition organized by the Galleria dello Scudo and the Fondazione Emilio e Annabianca Vedova and is today recognised as a pinnacle moment in the artist's oeuvre where he triumphantly returned to painting after having spent the previous years dedicating his attention almost exclusively to printmaking and teaching projects. After the war, New York encouraged a dialogue between American Abstract Expressionism and European art activities and direct communications were established between Venice and America. Vedova was deeply affected by America's social context in the post-war years and this cycle of works is an evident allusion to his experiences in the United States. Bold contrasts of black and white paint which cover his De America canvases reveal the artist's own recollections of New York slums and of the desolate outskirts of the city where the problems of immigration, destitution and social marginalisation were intense. We experience this through the use of expressive strokes and smears of paint that seek to convey a raw and violent reaction to the political reality of the post-war period.Excitingly, this present work, aptly titled De America-1, is the very first in the De America cycle. The collation of forms, symbols, and cypher-like signs that we see here fuse together; angular shapes and rough forms connect into a compressed unity speaking of a complex urban experience. Across all the works in this cycle, the energy and direction of the brushstroke alone is redirected into a series of informal marks of pure painterly energy that help determine the ultimate form of the artwork. Vedova's use of paper collage and newspaper has been considered on one level to reflect the trials and tribulations of everyday life whilst also introducing an element of reality helping to define the logic of painting. In a move that to some degree emulates Willem de Kooning's practice of painting, a unity of fragments by using a layering of paper, it is more widely thought that Vedova was in fact looking towards the work of the Berlin Dadaists and the Merz collages of Kurt Schwitters. Born in Venice, Emilio Vedova is regarded as one of the most influential Italian artists of the second half of the 20th century. He fervently believed that revolutionary art had to be abstract and sought to push painting into new territories with his visceral and gestural works that engage the viewer and redefine the space they inhabit. In the late 1950s, Vedova was associated with French Informel and later with Action painting and the resurgence of expressionism, yet arguably he has always defied specific categorisation. Largely self-taught, he learned to draw and paint by sketching Venetian churches and frescoes, particularly those of Tintoretto who was a key inspiration to the artist throughout his career; he was fascinated by the Mannerist painter's bold brushstrokes, accentuated gestures, and dramatic use of light, but also by his persona. Although Vedova split his time between Venice and Berlin for many years, his work remained anchored in the city of his birth and its painting traditions. Vedova made his debut at the Venice Biennale in 1948 and, from that point onwards would become a regular exhibitor: in 1952 he had a room devoted to his work, in 1960 he won the prize for Italian painting and in 1997 was honoured with the Golden Lion for lifetime achievement. He was the Italian representative at the first documenta in Kassel in 1955, and his work was exhibited there again in 1959, 1964 and 1982. Today his work is exhibited in many major Global institutions, notably at The Albertina, Vienna; Berlinische Galerie and Nationalgalerie, Berlin; Museo Nacional De Bellas Artes, Buenos Aires; Museu de Arte Contemporânea da Universidade de São Paulo; The Museum of Modern Art, New York and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice. The Fondazione Emilio e Annabianca Vedova, created by the artist and his wife, continues to promote his exceptional life and legacy, highlighting Vedova's importance in the history of 20th century art.The De America cycle is considered to conclude a period of transition, of experimentation in technique and style and in broader terms, Vedova's efforts to decipher the deep social and cultural changes that were taking place at the time; and De America-1, being the very first of its kind, is undoubtedly an exceptional and pivotal painting of the period. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: * AR TP* VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium.AR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium.TP For auctions held in Scotland: Lots will be moved to an offsite storage location (Constantine, Constantine House, North Caldeen Road, Coatbridge ML5 4EF, Scotland, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue.
