Alan Caiger-Smith (1930-2020) Aldermaston Pottery tin-glazed earthenware mermaid pitcher, by Alan Caiger-Smith, painted with mermaids and fish in red lustre, on a salmon ground, initials and monogram to the underside, 26cm high. ARRCONDITION REPORT: There are visible cracks to the rim and there is also fading to the glaze of the rim and interior. Further crack lines to the exterior. Age-related staining to the lustre and to the exterior.
Alan Caiger-Smith (1930-2020) at Aldermaston Pottery Bowl with red lustre decoration over half of the interior, signed to the base, 21cm wide x 8cm high, a smaller lustre 10A glaze decorated bowl by the same potter, marked and with original label to the base, 16.5cm wide x 5.5cm high, Edgar Campden (1930-1998) charger decorated with blue border, signed to the reverse, 37cm across and another bowl by the same potter, signed to the base, 19.5cm wide x 8cm high (4) The red half decorated bowl has damage and repairs, has been extensively re-glued. Smaller 10A glaze bowl has damage to the rim. Otherwise seems ok.

Five pieces of stoneware studio pottery from Aldermaston Pottery - comprising a goblet by Alan Caiger-Smith, with blue-green painted decoration on a white ground, painted mark, 13.4cm high; a goblet and bowl by Edgar Campden, the goblet 17.3cm high, the bowl 14cm diameter (hairline to rim); a mug by Jenney Jowett, 9.2cm high; and a larger bowl glazed in light brown over white with stylised foliate decoration, unidentified mark, 21.75cm diameter; together with three other similar pieces, possibly Aldermaston Pottery, comprising a goblet and mug with painted 'AG' monogram; and another mug with painted mark. (8)* Condition: - Goblet by Alan Caiger-Smith: In good condition with no faults. - A goblet by Edgar Campden: In good condition with no faults. - A bowl by Edgar Campden: Hairline crack to rim. - A mug by Jenny Jowett: Tiny glaze chip to rim above handle. An Alan Caiger Smith Aldermaston lustre decorated goblet, 16.5 cm high, together with an Alan Caiger Smith Aldermaston squat vase, 7.5 cm high, an Aldermaston style vase with lustre decoration, signed "WA" and with further mark, 11 cm high, another Aldermaston style baluster vase with lustre decoration of duck/pelican like birds swimming with fish beneath, bears indistinct mark to base, 19.5 cm high and a further studio pottery celadon type glazed vase, 14.5 cm high CONDITION REPORTS The goblet has some crazing and hairline fractures to the piece, mainly at the lower section/stem and there is a small amount of roughness on the rim of the goblet. The vase with the stylised ducks on has areas of losses/roughness to the rim. There is also a slightly strange area to the rim, shows up a slightly different colour under UV but not bright white so possibly just an area of glaze wrong - see images for more details. There is a large scratch on the bottom of the belly of the jug and a couple of noticeable scratches to the centre. All items have general wear and tear conducive with age and use, firing faults, in need of a light clean etc - see images for more details

Provenance:The late Oliver Watson (1949-2023), British Studio Pottery expert at the V & A, Emeritus Professor of Islamic Art and Architecture and curator of Islamic Art at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, and the School of Oriental Studies, London.Oliver Watson curated the pottery component of the 1985 Tate Britain exhibition St. Ives 1936–64 and contributed an essay on ceramics to the 1989 catalogue of the first major exhibition outside Britain to celebrate the work of St. Ives artists and potters, when St Ives potters toured Japan. In 1990 he published his groundbreaking book, British Studio Ceramics: a catalogue of the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, which was reprinted in 1993 as Studio Pottery: Twentieth-Century British Ceramics in the Victoria and Albert Museum Collection. Dora Billington (1890-1968) Large bowl decorated with abstract design, circa 1930-50 Glazed earthenware Impressed mark 'DB' 14cm high, 34cm diameter Footnote Dora Billington is regarded as a seminal figure in the British studio pottery movement of the 20th century. Billington taught pottery for most of her life (between 1919 and 1955) at the Royal college of Art and Central Saint Martins respectively. Although she was an incredibly skilled and influential potter in her own right, her life and work remains under documented. Today she is better known for the people she taught than for her own work. Her students included Alan Caiger-Smith, William Newland, Margaret Hine, Kenneth Clark, Ann Wynne-Reeves, Gordon Baldwin, Quentin Bell, Katherine Pleydell-Bouverie, Stella Crofts, Ursula Mommens, Ray Finch, Ruth Duckworth to name but a few. Condition Report: Small area (approx. 2cm wide) of re-glued chip to rim, fine hair line emanating from said chip. There is another fine hairline to rim. Fine craquelure to glaze throughout. General overall surface wear to include light scuffs and marks commensurate with age and use.

Some dust, dirt and scratches as expected. The Caiger-Smith jug has a small loss of glaze to the spout, the Hazelden jug with small loss of glaze to the handle, we think this is when they were made and not damage. Otherwise seems ok.

Alan Caiger Smith, An Aldermaston pottery figure of a grouse type bird. With typical polychrome decoration, height 23cm.This piece is not signed.There is an oval 'blown' section on the body which appears to have happened in the studio, the edge seems to be glazed and painted over.There is no other apparent damage.
