Wares produced in Stoke-on-Trent were brought to London, decorated and fired in a specially constructed kiln.

Born deaf, Thomson was later referred to by the press as the 'deaf and dumb artist'. During World War II Thomson became a full time salaried artist for the Air Ministry. Elected to the Royal Academy in 1945, Thomson was the last ever winner of an Olympic gold medal for painting in the 1948 London Olympics

Churchill was aided by Woodford Urban District Council chairman, Alfred James Hawkey, the namesake of Sir James Hawkey Hall, in Broomhill Road, Woodford Green, which Churchill opened in 1955.Chigwell held a War Weapons Week in June 1941, with Churchill as the president, and it raised more than £900,000. P C Barber (British, 20th Century) Whitley Wood inscribed on the reverse " P C Barber / Whitley Wood" pen, ink and wash, in a silvered frame 68 x 86cm (27 x 34in) Provenance: Marjorie Gwynneth Townsend-Whitling and by descent Other Notes: Born in 1895 in Norfolk, Marjorie Townsend-Whitling married Arturo Brown Castellanos, the Uruguayan Cultural Attaché to Belgium, and went on to live in Brussels in the 1920s. She moved in artistic circles, developing close friendships with Alfred Bastien in Brussels, and later with Stanley Spencer when she moved to Cookham, England in 1933. An alternative attribution for the present work has been given to Reca McGibbon, who lived in Cookham and was a friend of the family. Frame and backing slightly warped - image is good and clear.
