Registration No: SBO 326 Frame No: P1379457 MOT: ExemptA very rideable machineFitted with an electric startAlton alternatorStarts with easeThe Norton ES2 was in production from 1927 until 1964. A mid-range offerin with a sporting bent, it remained popular due to its reliability and ease of maintenance. From 1947 the ES2 had an innovative hydraulically damped telescopic front fork. This 1958 Norton ES2 has a lot of money spent on it to enhance its rideability. The previous owner totally restored the Norton to a very high standard during the process of which he decided to place a starter motor and an Alton alternator on it. The starter motor is understood to have benefited from a belt conversion too with the primary cover being modified to suit. The Norton started with ease at the press of a button but some light recommissioning is advised due to recent inactivity. Registration No: LKH 374 Frame No: Upper RC4233 Rear 8742B MOT: ExemptBlack Shadow engine number F10AB/1B/427212v electrics, electric start, Alton dynamoCentre stand, BTH magneto and a V5CVincent Motorcycles, "the makers of the world's fastest motorcycles", was established in 1928 when Phil Vincent bought the rights to HRD Motors Ltd after the company went into voluntary liquidation. With the backing of his family, wealthy from cattle ranching in Argentina, Vincent acquired the trademark, goodwill and remaining components for £450, renaming the new company Vincent HRD. Initially, motorcycles were sold under the HRD brand name, using their own chassis with propiatory engines but in 1934 two new engines were developed, a 500cc single and a 1,000 cc vee twin. Always the innovator, Vincent now had full control over his products and began introducing many design features that proved to be way ahead of their time such as cantilever rear suspension. In 1949 in order to stop any confusion with Harley Davidson (HD) in the USA, they began to use simply the 'Vincent' name on their products. The 1000cc V-twin was the fastest motorcycle in the world at the time and with some astute marketing become the bike everyone aspired to own, the Rapides and the Black Shadows have become some of the most desirable and iconic bikes of the era. This good looking Series C Black Shadow has been part of a private collection for the last 23 years and has been ridden and enjoyed by the vendor, including a trip around Europe. The bike has some desirable modifications including 12v electrics powering an all important electric starter, BTH magneto, Alton dynamo and even some neat little indicators. The chassis features an easier to use centre stand and interestingly the front brake plates and cooling fins are Lightning specification aluminium as well as the iconic 5" 150mph speedo. A lot of Vincents have become static display pieces over the years but this Shadow has been set up to be ridden and not just looked at. The fitting of an electric starter kit, together with the other subtle modifications, makes the bike a lot easier and more practical to use in modern day road conditions. The bike started and ran on the button when being photographed and comes supplied with some old MOTs and current V5C.Sale room notice.PLEASE NOTE. On running the bike we noticed an oil leak around the top of the engine/oil tank area that will need looking into. Registration No: KUJ 875 Frame No: CB32 273 MOT: ExemptTouring DBD with some mods to make it more rideableFitted with Mikuni carb, BTH Magneto and Alton DynamoSupplied with a BSAOC dating letter and a current V5CBSA was established in 1861 and became one of the world's largest producers of motorcycles. The marque’s most sought-after models were arguably the late 1950s / early 1960s Gold Star range of 350cc and 500cc singles and the equally rare Rocket Gold Star 650 twin. This is a nicely presented DBD34 Gold Star in touring specification that has been restored to use, fitted with a Mikuni carb, BTH Magneto and Alton Dynamo. According to the BSAOC dating letter, the rolling chassis was despatched to Jack Davies Motorcycles, Shropshire on 1st October 1953 as a ‘touring’ spec. model. Like so many bikes from the era, it somehow lost its original engine and is now fitted with a motor stamped DBD34 GS 7128 C that was originally sent as part of a complete bike to Hap Alzina in California as a 'Special Competition Model' in June 1963. As a 'touring' spec model it comes fitted with higher handlebars and a gearbox stamped 'SC' making it a far easier and more comfortable bike to ride. It has been part of an enthusiast’s private collection of ‘50s and ‘60s classics for the last few years, all stored in a heated garage. Stood for a while, it may need some recommissioning and comes supplied with a BSAOC dating letter and a current V5C. MONTGOMERY B. L.: (1887-1976) British Field Marshal of World War II. A remarkable A.L.S., Montgomerty of Alamein, one page, 4to, Isington Mill, Alton, Hampshire, 20th April 1968, to [Major Michael Babington Charles] Hawkins. Montgomery asks for his thanks to be conveyed to the Duke of Gloucester for ´telling you to write to me about my gift to the Imperial War Museum of the original copy of the Luneburg Heath surrender document´, and continues to reveal that ´His Royal Highness should know that I disobeyed orders in not sending the original to Eisenhower´s H. Q. - as I was told to do. If I had sent it, it would now be in the United States. I sent Eisenhower photostat copies´. Montgomery further reflects ´There are times when one disobeys orders! As a C-in-C in the field in war time one is in a strong position. When I was a junior officer it was generally advisable to do as one was told - but in my case, not always!!´. A letter of outstanding content. Some very light, minimal creasing to the edges, otherwise VGMontgomery had accepted the unconditional surrender of the German forces in the Netherlands, northwest Germany including all islands, in Denmark, and all naval ships in those areas, at Luneburg Heath on 4th May 1945. As the present letter indicates, the Field Marshal donated the original historical document to the Imperial War Museum. On 9th September 1968 Montgomery was invited to open a new documents room at the museum, the surrender document being the centrepiece exhibit.

9th-10th century A.D. A discoid lead insular Scandinavian domed trade weight with inset boss; the copper-alloy bridle mount very similar in design to one found at the late 9th/early 10th century Balladoole Viking boat burial on the Isle of Man in the 1940s; enamel-inlaid copper-alloy mount from a horse-harness set with a ribbed rim; the obverse decorated with a series of rectangular cells filled with opaque yellowish-green and reddish enamel, forming a circular border around a zoomorphic interlaced and spiral design formed by a series of sub-triangular and curving cloisons surrounding a circular central cell; the lead weight undecorated on the reverse. 194 grams, 43.5 mm (1 3/4 in.). Possibly found in Hampshire, UK. Acquired at a boot sale in Alton, Hampshire, UK in August 2023. Property of an Australian collector. Accompanied by a copy of the British Museum’s Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) report no.HAMP-7AD372. Recorded with Winchester City Museum and later the Finds Liaison Officer, Hampshire Cultural Trust, who in turn consulted with Medieval experts at the British Museum. This is an Insular Scandinavian weight which would have had an original weight of 8 ounces which is towards the heavier extreme for weights of this type, which re-use a variety of insular metalwork items as ready-made decoration. They appear to have originated in Viking contexts in England and/or Ireland in the late 9th century-early 10th century. Manufacture in the Isle of Man has been suggested for the entire group with similar designs and manufacturing techniques. The copper-alloy element is likely to be part of a Hiberno-Norse, Manx or possibly Scottish horse-harness boss; it probably has a pierced lug to the reverse, now embedded in the lead plug. It is very similar to pieces of the harness set from the ship burial at Balladoole, Arbory Isle of Man. No find spot is available, but the majority of weights with decorative insets do come from archaeological contexts such sites such as Torksey, Aldwark and Woodstown, or graves such as Kiloran Bay. [No Reserve]
13th-14th century A.D. Scaphoid matrix with strap and pierced lug to the reverse; median image of Mary enthroned beneath a canopy with infant Jesus on her lap, sharing a trefoil-headed sceptre; enigmatic dense blackletter legend to the rim; supplied with a museum-quality impression. 26.1 grams, 40 mm (1 1/4 in.). Found Shaw, Wiltshire, UK, before 1974.Shaw, a village noted in the Domesday survey, recorded a mere three poll-tax contributors in 1377, marking it as the Wiltshire village with the fewest taxpayers at that time. Likely abandoned in the early 15th century, Shaw became associated with Alton (the Alton in Wiltshire, not the one in Hampshire), with its agricultural lands consolidating with those of Alton. Today, one can only speculate about the challenges faced by the 10-20 residents who once called Shaw home. [No Reserve]
1st millennium A.D. Knapped flint triangular type with broad mounting panel to the rear; old collector' label '9766'; mounted on a custom-made stand. 62 grams total, 75 mm (13 cm including stand) (3 in. (5 1/8 in.)). Alton Edward Mills (1882-1970), Switzerland, thence by descent. [No Reserve]

* Montgomery (Bernard Law, 1887-1976), 1st Viscount Montgomery of Alamein, British Army officer who served in the First and Second World Wars. Autograph Letter Signed, 'Montgomery of Alamein', Isington Mill, Alton, Hants, 11 October 1967, to Heim, in response to a letter and concerning the state of the nation, 'I am afraid that much of what you say is very true. The truth is that in our country today we are suffering from what I would call "A Twilight of the Spirit". At Trafalgar, Dunkirk, and Alamein, the enemy was clear and plain. Today we are confronted with a very dangerous foe - the weakness from within, by which alone great nations fall. We seem to have forgotten how to pull together, and fight our way out of the moral and economic dangers which threaten us. We live in an age of computers; but you cannot put leadership and guts into a computer! I do not entirely despair. What the country needs is a "big" man of real stature, and moral courage, to give a lead. But I do not see him in any political party - at present', written in black ink in a neat hand on personal printed stationery, 1 page, 4to, window-mounted with a photograph of four Desert Rats (including Oscar Heim) of the Eighth Army in a tank in the desert, framed and glazed, 50 x 32 cm overallQTY: (1)NOTE:A highly insightful and revealing letter, written to the owner's father Oscar Heim (1906-1994), who had been stationed in North Africa during the Second World War. At the time of this letter the Labour Prime Minister was Harold Wilson, and Edward Heath was leader of the Conservative Party. The Labour government had weathered several economic storms since coming to power in 1964. From the summer of 1967 onwards a series of events destabilised the economy, including the Arab-Israeli Six-Day War in June, leading to the closure of the Suez Canal and a subsequent sharp rise in oil and other commodity prices. However, Montgomery is striking out not simply at economics but at the state of political leadership and direction and yearning for a personality equivalent to the way he saw himself as a military leader.
Benefitting from an older restoration, this well presented V12 Roadster is eminently usable. Supplied new by the famous Tourist Trophy Garage in Farnham, once steeped in Mike Hawthorn folklore, this lovely V12 E-Type was first registered to Weldsparrs of Alton Hampshire as listed on its Heritage Certificate. Still in its original factory specification and showing around 54,000 miles, it was subject to a full restoration between April and December 1986.Much of the servicing and maintenance in the 1990s was carried out by Classic Coachbuilders and in 2010 it benefitted from a replacement hood and tonneau-cover together with new wire wheels. The history file contains various invoices from this time detailing work carried out by the Hutson Motor Company of Bradford. The E-Type has been in our vendor's family ownership from 2015 and the last MOT was carried out in 2017 with work that included new power steering pipes. It was serviced by Super Vettura of Sunningdale twice before being virtually laid up in the family garage ever since. On the button and ready for a new chapter, this lovely V12 has stood the test of time from its earlier restoration, now some 18,000 miles on and has a very comfortable look in a world of over-restored, unusable examples.Specification Make: JAGUAR Model: E-TYPE S3 ROADSTER Year: 1973 Chassis Number: 1S1767BW Registration Number: SPH 99M Transmission: Auto Engine Number: 7S10977SA Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Odometer Reading: 72000 Miles Make: RHD Interior Colour: BlackClick here for more details and images

JMC Norvin 1,200ccRegistration no. EHJ 667HFrame no. NM11207Engine no. F10AB/4/11207•New build by specialist JMC Classics•Built to the vendor's specification•Final purchase price £43,500•Little used since completion circa 2020•1,411 miles recordedDeveloped from a design by Rex McCandless and first used by Norton on the works single-cylinder racers in 1950, when Geoff Duke rode it to a debut race victory at Blandford, the legendary 'Featherbed' frame has long been the special-builders' favourite. McCandless's design was way ahead of its time (and of the opposition), enabling Norton to maintain the competitiveness of their singles in the face of the growing challenge from foreign multis. New standards of steering, roadholding and comfort were set by McCandless's frame, which was immediately dubbed 'Featherbed' by Norton works star Harold Daniell. Although designed with a single-cylinder engine in mind, the generously proportioned Featherbed would in time prove capable of accommodating a wide variety of different power units - twins, triples, fours and v-twins, all could be made to fit with a little ingenuity. The stunning Vincent-engined example offered here is a new build to the vendor's high specification by Norvin specialists JMC Classics incorporating a wideline Featherbed frame believed to have been sourced from France (see handwritten French receipt for a dismantled Norvin motorcycle on file). The total cost of the build was £43,500 and JMC's related bills are on file. The Norvin was first registered in the UK on 1st September 2020 with an age-related registration. Specification highlights of this gorgeous motorcycle include the following: 1,200cc engineTwin-plug cylinder headsAlton alternatorFive-speed gearboxCentre stand fittedCeriani front forksHagon shock absorbersFontana double-sided four-leading-shoe front brake JMC alloy fuel tank, oil tank, seat, mudguards5' Smiths digital speedometer (displaying 1,411 miles at time of photography/cataloguing)Tomaselli adjustable handlebarsMagura control leversBorrani flanged alloy wheel rimsStainless steel fasteners and spindlesLast started/run on 31st January 2024, the Norvin has seen very little use since completion and has been kept dry stored in the garage when not in use. It is only sold because of a lack of space which necessitates downsizing the owner's collection. Additional documentation includes a current V5C; JMC correspondence with full build specification; DVLA and NOVA correspondence; and 'The Vincent HRD Company' David Holder correspondence. It should be noted the V5C incorrectly records the engine number as 'F10AD/4/11207' whereas it is actually 'F10AB/4/11207'. A rear paddock stand is included in the sale.Offered with keyFootnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding.REQUEST A TRANSPORT QUOTEPlease click the link to request a transport quote from our recommended transport company, Moving Motorcycles. To request a UK or European shipping quote - Moving MotorcyclesTo request an International shipping quote - ShippioThis Lot will be auctioned on Sunday 21 April starting at 11am GMT.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
