Rahmen besch. (120 x 97 cm). Herzog Emil Leopold August von Sachsen-Gotha-Altenburg (1772 Gotha - 1822 ebenda) war der vorletzte Landesfürst des thüringischen Herzogtums Sachsen-Gotha-Altenburg. Er war der zweite Sohn von Herzog Ernst II. von Sachsen-Gotha-Altenburg und dessen Frau Charlotte von Sachsen-Meiningen (vgl. Kat.-Nr. 467). Es wurde ihm eine hervorragende Ausbildung zuteil, mit Überzeugung vertrat er die französischen Ideale von Freiheit, Gleichheit und Brüderlichkeit. Bereits bei seinem Regierungsantritt 1804 galt er als Anhänger Napoleon Bonapartes. Herzog August, von ungewöhnlich sensiblem Charakter, betätigte sich neben seinen Regierungsgeschäften gerne schriftstellerisch, auch übte er sich als Maler. Er engagierte sich als Patron der Künste und Wissenschaften, eine tradierte Herrschertugend, wirkte als Mäzen und seine Kunstsammlung wurde als bedeutend erachtet. Eine andere Seite seines Wesens irritierte die Zeitgenossen: Er liebte bisweilen provozierende und schockierende Auftritte, zeigte sich in Frauenkleidung. Eines seiner letzten, nicht publizierten Werke war sein Roman "Aemilie", der offenbar autobiographische Elemente enthielt. Herzog August nannte sich in seiner privaten Korrespondenz "Emil", nach seinem ersten Vornamen. Bis kurz vor seinem Tod beschäftigte ihn die "Aemilie", "als hing sein Leben mit dem Leben der Hauptperson innig zusammen" (Gothaischer genealogischer Kalender, s. u., S. 19). 1813 schuf Josef Grassi ein Porträt des Herzogs, das in seiner Darstellung und seinen Maßen dem vorliegenden Gemälde entspricht (Gotha, Schlossmuseum Schloss Friedenstein, Gemäldesammlung, Inventar-Nr. SG 130, alte Inventar-Nr. Ahv. 642). Dieses war ein Geschenk des Herzogs an seinen Sekretär Friedrich Christian Jacobs. "Jakobs besitzt als Geschenk ein Gemählde des Herzogs von Grassi, welches ihn dichtend und in die Feder sagend darstellt und eines der ähnlichsten ist." (Gothaischer genealogischer Kalender, s. u., S. 18). Im Nachruf auf den verstorbenen Herzog August findet sich eine knappe Charakterisierung von dessen Physiognomie: Man fände nur selten "ein geistreicheres, seelendurchdrungeneres Gesicht, als wenn er dichtend, oder zeichnend, oder musikalisch schuf." (Gothaischer genealogischer Kalender, s. u., S. 11). Bernhard von Lindenau (1779 Altenburg - 1854 ebenda) dessen bedeutende Kunstsammlung den Grundstock des Lindenau-Museums in Altenburg bildete, beriet die Familie Sachsen-Gotha-Altenburg über lange Jahre in finanziellen und juristischen Fragen. Ab 1822 vertrat er den Nachfolger Augusts in den Regierungsgeschäften (was ihm im Volksmund den Beinamen "Herzog Bernhard" einbrachte). Das vorliegende Porträt wurde ihm in Anerkennung seiner Verdienste - ebenso wie Kat.-Nr. 467 - von der herzoglichen Familie geschenkt. Bernhard von Lindenau war ebenfalls von Josef Grassi porträtiert worden (Gotha, Schlossmuseum Schloss Friedenstein, Gemäldesammlung, Inventar-Nr. SG 131, alte Inventar-Nr. Ahv. 634). Die Porträts des Herzogs und Lindenaus zeichnet eine Gemeinsamkeit aus: Sie entsprechen sich spiegelbildlich hinsichtlich ihrer Körperhaltung mit dem sinnend erhobenen Kopf. Nach Grassis Porträt von Herzog August von Sachsen-Gotha-Altenburg aus dem Jahre 1813 entstanden mehrere Kopien, die entweder von Josef Grassi selbst oder von Ludwig Doell geschaffen wurden und ebenfalls als Geschenke weitergegeben wurden (vgl.
