Ca. 1st millennium BC. A fantastic lot of ancient weaponry and jewellery, dating back to the Bronze Age, featuring bronze spearheads of various types, an axe, bracelets and a cage type amulet. The Bronze Age saw a remarkable period of metalwork production, with the crafting of both weaponry and jewellery. During this time, humans first discovered and began to work with gold and bronze, which soon replaced earlier stone tools and weapons in the region. Bronze was much harder and more durable than copper, making it an ideal material for tools and weapons.Size: L:60-275mm / W:25-70mm ; 1.43kgProvenance: Private London collection since the 1990.
Late Dynastic Period, Dynasty 26-30, Ca. 688-343 BC. A fine turquoise glazed composition eye amulet, also called the Eye of Horus, details and checkered pattern carved in raised relief, the eyebrow and pupil well defined, pierced horizontally for suspension. Mounted in a 22kt gold oval eye shaped pendant with suspension loop connected to a necklace. Horus was one of the most significant Ancient Egyptian deities, most commonly depicted with the head of a falcon, and the body of a man. The eye of Horus, also known as ‘Wedjat’, was an ancient symbol of protection, particularly for the afterlife, and was also used to deflect evil. For this reason, it was often worn or hung on the deceased at burial. This symbol was highly influential in Egyptian life, with ancient sailors painting the image on the bow of their vessels to ward off evil. A RARE CARVED BONE FIGURE OF A TIGER, SHANG DYNASTYChina, 11th century BC. Well carved in the round as a crouching tiger with tucked-in legs, curled tail, and forward-facing head, the rib cage neatly incised, the ears pricked and eyes open in an alert expression. The bone has a superb, naturally grown, warm patina. Provenance: From the collection of Dr. Wou Kiuan. Wou Lien-Pai Museum, coll. no. E.4.13. Dr. Wou Kiuan (1910-1997) was a Chinese diplomat and noted scholar of Chinese art. His father, Wou Lien-Pai (1873-1944), was one the leading political figures of early 20th century China, remembered for his role as speaker and leader of parliament during the turbulent years of the Republican era. Dr. Wou himself embarked on an illustrious career in diplomacy until his retirement in 1952, when he settled in London and devoted the rest of his life to the study of Chinese art. It was no doubt fortuitous that Dr. Wou's years of collecting coincided with an abundant availability of exceptional Chinese art on the London market. From the mid-1950s to the late 1960s he was able to form a collection of well over 1,000 works that together represented virtually every category of Chinese art. At the heart of Dr. Wou's drive to collect was a burning desire to preserve the relics of China's rich historical past scattered across Europe, and to promote Chinese art and culture. It is unclear when Dr. Wou conceived of the idea to create a place to house his collection, but in 1968 he opened the doors to the Wou Lien-Pai Museum, named in honor of his father. Over the years the Museum became a 'must see' destination for collectors, academics, and visiting dignitaries, and Dr. Wou would delight in leading his visitors through the galleries, recounting stories of China's glorious history. Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age. Displaying exceptionally well. Extensive wear, minor losses, chips, expected age cracks and other natural flaws in the bone, minor old repairs, signs of weathering and erosion, encrustations. Note that the patina took more than 3,000 years to develop and therefore is not only spectacular in appearance, but literally one-of-a-kind.Weight: 61.5 g Dimensions: Length 12.5 cmBone was widely used for both practical and decorative purposes in ancient China. It was made into vessels, spoons, and personal adornments. With its coiled tail and long muzzle, this bone carving of a tiger was probably used as an amulet or talisman, protecting its wearer from harm and danger. The tiger, called hu or laohu in Chinese, is among the most recognizable of the world's charismatic megafauna. Originating in China and northern Central Asia, the tiger was known to the earliest Chinese, who likely feared, admired, and respected it for its strength, ferocity, and regal bearing. Though its precise symbolism in Shang times (c. 1600-c. 1046 BC) remains unknown, the tiger doubtless played a totemic, tutelary, or talismanic role. By the Western Han period (206 BC-AD 9) - a thousand years after this pendant was made - the tiger was regarded as the 'king of the hundred beasts', or baishou zhi wang, due to its power and ferocity and especially for the markings on its forehead which typically resemble the character wang, or 'king'. In addition, not only did the tiger figure among the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac, but it gained a place among the auspicious animals that symbolize the four cardinal directions - the white tiger, or baihu, of the west, the azure dragon of the east, the vermillion bird of the south, and the black tortoise of the north.Literature comparison: Compare a related bone carving of a tiger, 4.3 cm long, dated 13th-11th century BC, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession number 1985.214.119. Late New Kingdom, circa 1550-1070 B.C. A blue glazed composition figure of the advancing god Ra (possibly Ra-Horakhty), falcon-headed and wearing a sun disc, set on an integral rectangular base, left leg positioned in front of the right, arms held straight by his sides, wearing a wig and kilt; tapering pillar with suspension loop behind solar disc; repaired. 18.4 grams, 87 mm high (3 3/8 in.). Acquired from Dr Jan Beekmans, circa 1982.UK private collection. In ancient Egypt, Ra sat as the king of all the deities and the father of all creation, the god who could not only govern the sun, but who transformed himself into the sun. He was associated with the falcon, hence he is typically portrayed as a human with a falcon's head. The major cultic centre for Ra was the ancient city Iwnw, known as Heliopolis to the Greeks, which today lies under modern Cairo. The ancient Egyptians were an agricultural society inhabiting a desert; the sun (and thus Ra) was an integral component of their world view. Placed on the chest of the deceased, this amulet offered the wearer the chance of eternal renewal each morning with the sun. A video of this lot is available to view on Timeline Auctions Website.]

Acquired from Dr Jan Beekmans, circa 1984.UK private collection. Maat and the moon god Thoth, husband and wife, together embody wisdom and cosmic order. As a divine couple, they served the sun god, Re. Like Thoth, the ancient Egyptians connected the ibis with the moon, owing to its crescent moon-shaped beak. The ibis was well known in antiquity for its refusal to drink unhealthy and poisoned water, or to kill poisonous reptiles, and set mankind an example of cleanliness; thus, like the god Thoth, the ibis offered protection against dangerous forces and served as a model for purity and good sense. Maat embodies the order that Thoth protects. Her symbol, an ostrich feather, references a bird that inhabits desert and savannah habitats, although it must never wander too far away from rivers and lakes. The ostrich cannot fly, but it is a fast runner and a strong fighter. A video of this lot is available to view on Timeline Auctions Website.]
