‡ A PAIR OF MONUMENTAL ITALIAN SCULPTED WHITE MARBLE URNS IN THE MANNER OF THE MEDICI VASE LATE 19TH CENTURY Each with everted rim above a frieze of fruiting grapevines in low relief, the main registers of the bodies of the urns relief carved with figural and equestrian scenes, each with twin handles rising from foliate carved undersides, on knopped and waisted socles with square bases 160cm high, 105cm diameter  ‡ UK import VAT at the reduced rate (currently 5%)  It was not uncommon for sculptors inspired by ancient works to reinterpret them and to make changes to either the form or the decorative scheme as they saw fit, as is the case in the pair of marble urns offered in this lot. They are of course of Campana form, like the Medici Vase, but the similarities go much further than that. The egg-and-dart moulding to the everted rims, above figural friezes which use the upper edge of the foliate carved underside as a flat ground for the figural scene is very reminiscent of the Medici Vase, as are the twin reeded handles rising from masks. The knopped socle and square base are also fairly generic, but when all the similarities are taken into account together it is reasonable to suggest that the urns offered here were at the very least, inspired by the Medici urnAs for the Medici Vase, it was probably a part of the Medici collection by the late 16th century and within one hundred years or so was one of the most celebrated antiquities in EuropeSee John Davis, p 298 - these are the model illustrated which was a known example available from J P White circa 1906Condition Report: Both urns bear the usual minor knocks and scuffs overall consistent with their age and use. Some larger chips and losses to some extremities. The edge of the rims are chipped in places a little more significantly but not dramatically so. The urns are composed of various, separately carved elements, and there is also further minor chipping where these individual parts meet. There are some areas where weathering has affected the smoothness of the marble leaving a granular surface. Each handle of one urn has a restored crackThe urns have been fully and professionally cleaned, giving them a bright, white hue. Please refer to additional images for visual reference to conditionCondition Report Disclaimer

Lot 423

Late Dynastic Period, Ca. 664-332 BC. Late Dynastic Period, Ca. 664-32 BC. A carved sarcophagus mask formed from a finely-grained cedar wood. The countenance presents with bulging almond-shaped eyes, a broad nose with flared nostrils, full lips with slightly indented corners, a rounded chin, and smooth cheeks, all beneath a wide headdress that sits low on the forehead. Remains of the original dowel holes can be seen on the reverse. These masks were stylised and idealised portraits of the deceased individual and served an elaborate and important role in Egyptian funerary ritual as they protected the deceased’s face and head in their travels to the underworld, and in some cases helped to elevate the deceased to a god-like status through adoptions of godly attributes such as blue or gold skin. Cf. Christie's, Live Auction 5488, Antiquities, 7 October 2010, Lot 328.Size: L:250mm / W:135mm ; 420gProvenance: Property of a London Ancient Art gallery, formerly acquired in Monaco.

Lot 463

Ca. 400-300 BC. A beautiful red-figure terracotta krater with a broad rim, bell-shaped body flanked by two lug handles, and a pedestalled ring foot. Side A depicts a cloaked female figure holding a circular object, perhaps a tympanon (hand drum), who follows a nude male, who holds a bucket. Side B features two laureate males clad in chlamydes facing each other. The scenes are separated by vegetal motifs and are framed by a wreath of laurel around the rim, and a geometric frieze below running around the whole of the vessel. Kraters were ancient Greek vessels used for diluting wine with water; they usually stood on a tripod in the dining room during a symposium (drinking party), where wine was mixed. Ancient wine was considerably stronger than its modern counterparts and often had to be mixed with water, honey, and spices. Kraters were made of metal or pottery and were often painted or elaborately ornamented. In Homer's Iliad, the prize offered by Achilles for the footrace at Patroclus's funeral games was a silver krater of Sidonian workmanship. The Greek historian Herodotus describes many enormous and costly kraters dedicated at temples or used in religious ceremonies to hold libations. Cf. Christie's, Live Auction 5952, Antiquities, 27 October 2009, Lot 17.Size: L:325mm / W:330mm ; 3.36kgProvenance: Property of a central London Gallery; formerly in a South English estate collection; acquired in the 1990s from Andre de Munter, Brussels, Belgium; previously in and old European collection.

Lot 468

Ca. 200 BC. An elegant glass skyphos consisting of a deep cup supported by a pedestal foot, with two opposing handles adorning its sides. The pale green glass is striking, with a delicate yet sturdy composition that speaks volumes of the skill of the artisans who created it. During the Hellenistic period, skyphoi were used for a variety of functions, such as drinking wine or other beverages. They were also used in symposia, which were social gatherings where men would drink, socialize, and discuss philosophical ideas. The design of the skyphos, with its deep cup and sturdy foot, made it ideal for these occasions, as it prevented spills and provided a firm grip. The handles also allowed for easy handling and passing of the cup between participants. For a similar example, see Bonhams, Antiquities, London 1 May 2008, Lot 122.Size: L:90mm / W:145mm ; 130gProvenance: Private London collection; acquired on the European art market prior to 2000.

Lot 533

Northern Italy, Villanovan culture, ca. 800-700 BC. A black kyathos, a single-handled dipper with an interestingly-shaped conical foot of openwork design. This is a very early example of a vessel shape that would later become highly refined by the Etruscans and then the Greeks, and the handle here, which in later versions towered high above the body of the vessel, is small and looped. The body is made of impasto, a coarse earthenware that is a precursor to Etruscan Bucchero. The Villanovans inhabited Italy during the early Iron Age, and much of what we know of them comes from excavations of cemeteries (the first at Villanova near Bologna in northern Italy) where they cremated the dead and buried them in pottery urns in a very distinctive, double-cone shape. In the 8th century, Greek colonists arrived in the region, and began to influence Villanovan ceramics and their forms, as with this kyathos.Size: L:120mm / W:210mm ; 625gProvenance: United States (Colorado) - Artemis Fallery, Fine Antiquities, Asian, Ethnographic Art Sale, 18 May 2017, lot 20; formerly in private Carlton collection, Los Angeles.

Lot 576

Ca. 200-300 AD. A beautiful light green, blown-glass dish featuring a round form, with a rounded lip, a concave base, and the interior of the plate with a smooth, glossy surface. These shallow plates or dishes were used as a serving ware, or as decorative items. The plates were likely very expensive and often used to display wealth and status. For a comparative piece, see Harden, D. B. (1987). Glass of the Caesars. Milan: Olivetti. p. 98; Christie's, Live Auction 2323 Antiquities, 10 Jun 2010, lot 63.Size: L:15mm / W:130mm ; 60gProvenance: Property of a West London gentleman; previously in a collection formed on the UK/International art market in the 1990s.

Lot 615

Ca. 100-300 AD. A cast bronze pendant in the shape of a male captive in a seated position, with bounded hands and legs, and his head bowed in a pose of submission. The figure is pierced vertically through his back, and horizontally through his stomach. These pendants were symbols of power and dominance and were used to show the wearer's control and their position and authority. This piece comes with a modern necklace cord. Cf. Bonhams, Antiquities, 1 May 2008, London, Lot 261.Size: L:30mm / W:45mm ; 50gProvenance: Private London collection; British art market 1990s.

Lot 649

Ca. 300-400 AD. A free-blown glass jar of a squat form, characterized by a concave base and a globular body that tapers to an indented neck. The vessel is decorated with a zigzagging, blue trailing along the lower body. These small jars were often used to store cosmetics, oils, and other liquids, as well as small items. The concave base was meant to provide stability and the indented neck line was used to secure a lid or cap. For a similar jar, but with handles see Christie's, Live Auction 3403, Antiquities, 11 December 2014, Lot 189.Size: L:75mm / W:80mm ; 50gProvenance: Property of a West London gentleman; previously in a collection formed on the UK/International art market in the 1990s.

Lot 659

Ca. 300-400 AD. A green glass jar that boasts a broad globular body with a concave base featuring a pontil mark. The rounded short, funnel-shaped neck is elegantly folded in rim and connected to the shoulder through three applied handles, lending the piece a unique and intriguing form. Each handle is skillfully fashioned and adds to the jar's charm and aesthetic appeal. The jar's green hue adds a touch of sophistication to its already beautiful form. During the Roman period, glassmaking was a highly esteemed and sought-after craft. Roman glassmakers were renowned for their technical skill and ability to create glass objects of various colors, shapes, and sizes. Cf. Christie's Live Auction 12256, Antiquities, 12 April 2016, Lot 106.Size: L:80mm / W:80mm ; 120gProvenance: Property of a West London gentleman; previously in a collection formed on the UK/International art market in the 1990s.
