Egypt was much in vogue at this time, and travellers, collectors and lovers of antiquities were keen to buy works inspired by the East or depicting the great monuments of ancient Egypt. He made a long tour in Egypt, Nubia, the Sinai, the Holy Land, Jordan and Lebanon. Throughout, he produced a vast collection of drawings and watercolour sketches. Lekythos. Southern Italy, 4th century BC.Black-glazed pottery.Provenance: Antiquities. Christie's London, 17 May 1977, lot 2. Pickwick Antiques, Barcelona (1978). Later Ribot-Uriach collection.Attached is a copy of the technical card of the Ribot-Uriach collection.Attached copy of the Museum of Antiquities Collection data sheet.Measurements: 8 x 5 cm (diameter). This lekythos has been decorated using the black-varnish technique, a transparent raw varnish that took on its characteristic intense, glossy black tone after firing. It has a rounded globular body, which prevents it from slipping when held in the hand, a narrow neck and a prominent mouth. It has no figurative decoration, and combines the black surface with the reddish surface of the ceramic for some bands (such as the base and the mouth). The lekythos is a type of Greek pottery used to store perfumed oil for body care. This type of vessel was also widely used as a funerary vessel. It is characterised by its elongated shape, narrow neck and wide mouth, which both limits the flow of the oil and facilitates its application.

It has decoration in relief, representing a female head, on the upper part of the globular body or container and a long spout in a channel with a rim. The entire surface is varnished black except for one rim where it is enhanced. The guttus is a type of Greek pottery characterised by its narrow spout, and was used for pouring oil during meals. The black-glaze technique uses the same glaze as that used on red-and-black-figure ware, but covering the entire piece, without figurative decoration. It was a transparent glaze when raw, which took on its characteristic intense, glossy black tone after firing.

In 1802 Pope Pius VII bestowed on Antonio Canova, by then the most celebrated artist in Europe, the title of "Inspector-General of Antiquities and Fine Art to the Papal State" (a position which had once been held by Raphael). In 1819, the year this document was signed, Canova laid the foundation stone to the Tempio Canoviano, the church which he himself had designed for Possagno (the town of his birth).
