Verzameling van Verschillende Gekleede Mans- en Vrouwen-Standen..., first collected edition, engraved title-vignette by H.Kobell and 33 finely hand-coloured plates by Sallieth after Jakob Perkois and Johannes Huibert Prins, most stipple-engraved, one or two with aquatint, contemporary ink manuscript note of acquisition "acheté 20fr. le 28 Juillet [?]1825" to rear pastedown, a superb clean copy in contemporary glazed blue boards with decorative gilt roll border, slightly rubbed and marked, rebacked, small tear to spine, preserved in modern cloth drop-back box, morocco label to spine, [Bobins 429; Colas 2311; Landwehr, Dutch Books with Coloured Plates 389], folio, Rotterdam, J.Immerzeel, Jr., 1818.⁂ Rare coloured first edition of this artist's manual depicting street vendors and other workers, by Perkois (1756-1804), a teacher from the Drawing Academy in Middleburg, and Prins (1757-1806), secretary of the art society Pictura in The Hague. The engraver, Sallieth (1749-91), from Rotterdam, is known mostly for his maritime views. A few copies have appeared at auction but mostly of the later 1833 edition and all uncoloured, as is the only copy listed on Library Hub (V & A).

Ackermann, Jun., [1829].⁂ A fine copy of what Schwerdt calls "one of Alken's most charming sets of its kind. The style of drawing is very minute and the colouring exquisite."Provenance: Joel Spitz (bookplate, this no.458 in his collection).

Pompey, hand-coloured aquatint panorama, numbered segments 4-35 only on conjoined sheets forming continuous strip (lacking first three segments 1-3 but with engraved imprint at end), c.130 x 4845mm. (of 4880mm.), rather soiled and stained at beginning, segment 4 defective at head and frayed at foot, a couple of short tears to head of 12, lacking portion from sky of 33, all repaired, otherwise clean and bright, on roller housed in original boxwood drum covered in glazed hand-coloured aquatint pictorial label, drum c.170mm. tall, top lacking portion at edge and base chipped, [Abbey, Life 489, without drum; Bobins 1311], W.Sams, 1822.⁂ Rare panorama depicting Pompey's third triumph in 61 B.C. after his successes in the East, particularly his victory of Mithridates. The strip processes from left to right but is numbered right to left and features trumpeters, sacrificial oxen, standard bearers, mounted & foot soldiers, carts of booty, camels, models of conquered cities, captives, musicians, and a chariot pulled by elephants carrying the victorious general. It was advertised as being with a descriptive key but no copy of this has been found. The Abbey copy consisted of sections 1-33 only and lacked the drum. We have traced a single copy at auction, in 1973, but this was also defective. WorldCat records one copy only (Princeton).

Havell, Junior (Robert) A Coasting View of Brighton, hand-coloured aquatint panorama with engraved title at beginning, c.125 x 3275mm., on conjoined sheets forming continuous strip, mounted on linen, a little soiled and stained, on roller housed in handsome original black straight-grain morocco drum decorated in gilt with black-stained boxwood top and base, drum c.180mm. tall, a few scuffs, [Abbey, Life 495; Bobins 1602], Robert Havell & Son, 1824.⁂ Very rare panorama of the Brighton seafront from Shoreham to the Race Ground and including the Royal Pavilion, Marine Parade, and the Chain Pier which was opened in November 1823 but destroyed in a storm in 1896. Library Hub cites only one copy in the UK (University of Cambridge, drum damaged). WorldCat adds copies at Harvard and Yale.

A 19th century coloured aquatint of the Metropolitan Rifle Club Volunteers, by Harris after Martens, published in 1852, approx 24 x 35 cms, framed and glazed.  Provenance: Lt Col David A G Horton-Smith MBE TD (1910-1991) was commissioned into the London Scottish Regiment (his father's regiment) in 1936. In 1940 his regiment was stationed on the south coast, with the expectation of imminent invasion by which time he was captain. D-day 5th June 1944 he landed with Canadian regiments on Juno Beach and, attached to Divisional HQ Staff, he was part of the allied push across Europe. He was twice mentioned in dispatches and awarded Territorial Decoration. In later life he was Vice President, Chairman of the Works Committee of the NRA. He was strongly associated with London and Middlesex RA, The Scottish Rifle Association (SRA), The London Scottish Rifle Club, The British Commonwealth Rifle Club (formerly the India Rifle Club), The Old Marlburian Rifle Club amongst others. His contribution to shooting both at home and abroad was the source of his MBE, he had a longstanding presence on the Bisley shooting scene and was very much involved with promoting and facilitating the sport of rifle shooting in the UK. Footnote: In response to public concern at developments in Continental Europe, The Secretary of State authorised Lieutenants of counties in England to form "Volunteer Rifle Corps" (VRCs) a call that was greatly oversubscribed. VRC's were therefore the genesis of the NRA, which was formed "for the encouragement of Volunteer Rifle Corps and the promotion of rifle shooting" quote Lord Elcho, founder and 1st President.
