And he gathers the prayers as he stands,And they change into flowers in his hands,Into garlands of purple and red;And beneath the great arch of the portal,Through the streets of the City ImmortalIs wafted the fragrance they shed.Sandalphon, Henry Wadsworth LongfellowLittle is known of Matthew William Webb beyond his association with Burne-Jones, where he was employed as a 'junior studio assistant' in 1877.1. In the 1870s, Burne-Jones's ambition was to 'create a workshop in the manner of the Renaissance painters'.2 and many fine artists, such as Charles Fairfax Murray, T. M. Rooke and James M. Strudwick were employed during this period.Webb was a member of the Art Workers Guild from 1890, and exhibited two works at the RBA (including the present lot) as well as three at the New English Art Club, between 1909-1911.An allegorical work, attributed to Webb, is in the collection of Harris Manchester College, University of Oxford, while a copy after Giovanni Bellini is in the collection of the William Morris Gallery, London. Lot 70

18th century English facet stem wine glass, circa 1770, engraved T. Bycot, 14.5cm tall The Cycle Club which descended from the Vaughan family of Nannau in North Wales (see P.Lole, 'Limpid Reflections', Glass Circle News, no.118, March 2009, pp.7-8). With its members' close political support of the Stuart cause, the Cycle Club is strongly associated with Jacobite glass. It is known that wine glasses bear the name of a member of the Cycle, including that of the arch-Jacobite Sir Watkin Williams Wynn, recorded in the twenty-six meetings held by a separate host from 2 July 1770 until 8 July 1772 of which 26 people were present. Twelve of the names on the set of thirteen glasses are featured on a contemporary card rota with the owner of the glasses, Robert H. Vaughan acting as host on 24 June 1771. The thirteenth inscribed glass for Philip Egerton of Oulton (1694-1776), does not feature on the rota, but as by far the oldest member - he would have been 76 at the commencement of this Cycle - he was presumably excused from hosting a meeting.Four of the glasses are now in the National Museum of Wales, Cardiff. The set included glasses for Sir Watkin Williams Wynn (1748-89; President of the Cycle); Hon. R. Barry (1719-87); Hon. I.S. Barry (1725-84); T. Bycot (d.1798); P. Davies; R.P. Price (1736-82); B. Read; R.P. Thelwall (1720-75); W. Williams (d.1808); Dr. Wynn (?1745-96?); O. Wynne (1742-82); P. Egerton of Oulton (1694-1776). Hartshorne (1897) records that at Oulton there survived a set of ten Jacobite glasses of circa 1750, which were used at Cycle meetings together with a tabernacle portrait of Prince Charles by Giles Hussey. Unfortunately, Oulton Park was burned down in a disastrous fire in the 1920s, and the glasses may not have been saved. It has been suggested that some Clubs, and the Cycle in particular, had duplicate sets of glasses at different venues, and this discovery of a set of Cycle glasses at the Vaughans of Nannau seems to confirm this belief.Further evidence to support this proposition may perhaps be observed in the two group portraits painted by Sir Joshua Reynolds of The Society of Dilettanti, dating from 1778-79, now hanging in Brooks' Club in London. Sir Watkin Williams Wynn, Bart, can be seen on the extreme left-hand side of one of the paintings (illustrated) whom along with fellow members of the Dilettanti, including Sir William Hamilton, are clearly holding facet-stem wine glasses of the type used by the Cycle. Unfortunately, the Dilettanti glasses do not appear to be inscribed This glass presumably one from a set

Ca. 200-300 AD.An arch-shaped schist frieze exhibiting unparalleled craftsmanship, with intricate carvings of Bodhi tree leaves adorning its surface. Each leaf is uniquely depicted with its characteristic shape with a pointed tip, creating a sense of naturalism. The reverse of the frieze is unworked, indicating that it was originally part of a larger sculpture setting. The Bodhi tree, under which the Buddha is said to have attained enlightenment, holds great significance in Buddhism, and as such, the frieze would have been a crucial element in a religious context. It is believed that the Buddha meditated under a Bodhi tree for 49 days before achieving enlightenment. Size: L:290mm / W:620mm ; 27.2kg Provenance: From the collection of a London gentleman; formerly acquired in early 2000s in Belgium; previously in 1970s European collection.

1994 Land Rover Defender 90 County Transmission: manualMileage:99196The Land Rover Series I was launched in 1948 and, incredibly, production only finished in January 2016 after a continuous run of 67 years through various evolutions before becoming the Defender, though the design stayed largely un-changed. Outwardly, there is little to distinguish the post-1983 vehicles from the Series III Land Rover. A full-length bonnet, revised grille, plus the fitting of wheel arch extensions to cover wider-track axles are the most noticeable changes. Internally, coil springs offered a more comfortable ride and a permanent four-wheel drive system derived from the Range Rover featuring a two-speed transfer gearbox with a lockable centre differential. A modernised interior and a new series of progressively more powerful and modern engine characterised things under the skin. This Defender has lived a relatively sedate life, it was with its original keeper, a Mrs Doyle until 2012, before being bought by our vendors neighbour, Mr Litton, in 2012. Our vendors neighbour decided to treat himself to a brand new Defender when he retired, but decided he wanted a second vehicle to keep the mileage down on his shiny new purchase. Mr Litton fitted the option of a hand controlled brake pedal to the vehicle and when our vendor purchased the vehicle from him earlier this year, he decided to leave it fitted as it wasn't in the way and it may help someone else at a later date. The vendor reports that the speedometer stopped working and had to be replaced some years ago, so the true mileage is understood to be in the region of 120,000. This rugged go-anywhere Defender is being offered without reserve, so why not have a go at buying one of the most accomplished off-roaders?

2012 Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupé Transmission: automaticMileage:36177A historic model in the continuing history of the Rolls-Royce marque, the Phantom was the first all-new design to be introduced by the company following its takeover by BMW. Produced at a new factory near Goodwood in Sussex, the Phantom revived a great name from Rolls-Royce's past, which had always been synonymous with unrestrained luxury. In keeping with the tradition established by previous Phantoms, the newcomer was a very large motor car, outstretching the old Silver Seraph by 18 while boasting a radiator shell four inches taller. Priced at around £260,000 at time of launch, it was also 40% more expensive. While the body structure represented the ultimate in automotive technology, its accoutrements remained entirely traditional in choice of materials, consisting of the finest hide trim, genuine woollen carpets, and carefully selected wood veneers. This Phantom Coupé was originally registered by Rybrook Rolls-Royce as a demonstrator and was specified in this stunning colour combination of Metropolitan Blue with Seashell extended leather interior. The car was purchased by the vendor in 2013 and has been cherished ever since, maintained regardless of cost and presented in absolutely immaculate condition. The original specification includes the all-important starlight leather headlining, Piano black veneer, 21" fully polished alloy wheels, automatic soft close doors and boot lid, two Rolls-Royce door umbrellas, front and rear parking cameras, garage door opener, 15 speaker premium surround sound, active cruise control, sat nav, Bluetooth, ambient interior lighting, heated seats and automatic Spirit of Ecstasy. Quite simply, this car is the very height of luxury, there is nothing aside from a private jet which would be better appointed for a journey to the south of France.Further cementing just how fastidious the vendor is, the car had over £12,000 of paintwork in 2018, just to bring it up to the standard he desired, attending to any stone chips which had been picked-up over the preceding years. A further £8,205 was spent in 2021, attending to rubber seals around the windows, doors, wings, arch clips and so on, the car now must be seen to be fully appreciated. These cars are sure to go down as one of the most desirable modern Rolls-Royce's in years to come, produced in such small numbers and beginning to look even better with age, this example would be the perfect addition to any collection of significant cars.

1999 Maserati Quattroporte IV Evoluzione (3.2 litre) Transmission: manualMileage:23342Maserati launched its first Quattroporte back in 1963 and has continued to make a version of this luxury four-door sports saloon ever since. The fourth-generation model came out in 1994 and was the first Maserati to be produced under new owners Fiat, who had bought this illustrious Italian marque from Alejandro de Tomaso in 1993. An evolution of the Biturbo platform, the Quattroporte IV was styled by Marcello Gandini (of Lamborghini Miura and Countach fame) and featured his signature slashed rear wheel arch design which had first been seen on the Countach and later on the Maserati Shamal. Initially powered by the 280bhp twin-turbo 24-valve 2.8 V6 from the Ghibli, the Quattroporte IV got the flagship Shamal engine in 1996, a 336bhp twin-turbo 3.2 V8 which gave it blistering performance, 0-60 in 5.8 seconds and a top speed of 168mph. A Getrag six-speed manual gearbox came as standard, but a more town-friendly ZF four-speed automatic was also available as an option. This excellent, rare right hand drive, 1999 Maserati Quattroporte IV has only covered 23,400 miles from new which is supported by comprehensive service history. Supplied new by Meridien Maserati in the New Forest, Hampshire to Mr. J Peters of St. Peters Port, Guernsey. In his ownership the car was looked after by Meridien Modena and Doyle Motors Guernsey. In 2015, the car was sold to Dr. D Mitchell and imported into the UK, for the three years that he kept the car it was maintained by Autoshield Maserati, Manchester. The next change of keeper came in 2017/18 when passed to Mr. P Winfield whose preferred repairer was McGrath Maserati. The last recorded service with the cambelts changed was with Autoshield at 23,176 miles in November 2021, this was done for the current owner who purchased the car in June 2021. Since that service the car has covered less than 200 miles. Finished in Netuno Blue metallic with Ivory leather interior, this excellent Maserati Quattroporte IV is supplied with an MoT test certificate which expires in August 2024, the handbook pack which contains the service record book and a file containing invoices from 2015 to the last service. The Quattroporte IV Evoluzione is regarded as the best Quattroporte produced as this was after Maserati was taken over by Ferrari.

1986 BMW E28 M535i Transmission: manualMileage:109566The E28 BMW 5-Series, released in September 1981, was BMW's breakthrough executive saloon. Designed by the iconic BMW designer Claus Luthe, the E28 was initially sold with a combination of four and six-cylinder engines, but in 1984 BMW revealed the very first M5 at the Amsterdam motor show. When it was launched 42 years ago, the new BMW E28 5-Series looked like little more than a facelifted BMW E12 5-Series, a car that had been around since 1972. The E12 had earned itself a fine reputation as a well-made, mid-range saloon that ranged from the 518 to the hot-rodded 528i and M535i.The E28 5-Series range started with the 518, powered by a 90bhp four-cylinder known by its M10 engine code. A 518 with optional five-speed gearbox and power steering was next up the chain, followed by six-cylinder cars, all with five speeds and PAS, with the 125bhp M20 520i and 150bhp M30 525i, plus the 184bhp M30 528i with standard alloy wheels and electric front windows. A three-speed ZF automatic box was optional on all six-cylinder cars as well. The 535i came in two forms, the M535i with the plastic bodykit (bumpers, sills and arch spats) and special metric wheels, plus a metal-bumper version that looked like most other models but had the same special wheels and arch spats. Both models had the Bilstein dampers and M Technic suspension. The M535i was by far the more popular model; the metal bumper version was discontinued but remained available to special order and was renamed 535i SE. This is an exceptional unmolested example of the super cool E28 M535i with the all-important dog leg first gearbox. We are informed the car has led a very gentle life and has been maintained exceptionally well by the fastidious owner while sitting on original old stock E28 M5 wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport tyres. The Diamond Black bodywork is beautiful after a significant body restoration costing in excess of £10,000, all the floors are solid and jacking points excellent. The invoices for recent maintenance are endless but include, a new master cylinder, accumulator, bushes, exhaust, shock absorbers, viscous fan, front brake calipers, rear main seal, new control arms, plus much more. Boasting a great specification including electric sunroof, rear head rests, on board computer, head light wash wipe, rear blind and a Blaupunkt Bremen radio to give you the period look but with modern functionality. Present is a great service history with ample service and parts invoices, original dealer plates and the vendor who has owned the car for the last four years assures us it drives faultlessly and is ready to enjoy and impress at any car show. The original full book pack is there with original dealer cards and service book. With an MoT test certificate valid until March 2024, this is a very well 'sorted' and exceptionally well presented example of one of the 80's most iconic cars. * Interested parties should note that the private registration plate shown is to be retained by the vendor and a new, age-related registration issued instead
