A BONE APPLE CORER CARVED BY A BRITISH ARMY GUARD OF THE 20TH REGIMENT OF FOOT ON ST. HELENA, Dated 5 May 1821A bone apple corer engraved on the turned handle JAMESTOWN,, and 5 May 1821 within a wreath on one side and the emblem for the 20th Foot on the other, and with a motto below QUIS CUSTODIET, the blade inscribed in manuscript Longwood House, Saint Helena Island, May 1821 20th Regt. 6in (15cm high) in modern glazed oak display case with a silvered regimental button of the 20th Foot, 5 3/4in (14.5cm) long; 7 3/4in (20cm) high in case Footnotes:This apple corer was very probably crafted by one of Napoleon's guard to commemorate his death whilst in exile on the island of Saint Helena. After Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo in 1815, the British sent him to the island of St. Helena to live out his exile from Europe. The island is situated in the South Atlantic Ocean some 1,200 miles off the coast of Africa, and, at the time, was in the ownership of the East India Company. The inaccessibility of this location was partly chosen in order to avoid any escape attempts, as had been seen early in 1815 with Napoleon's successful escape from the Mediterranean island of Elba. Another precaution taken by the British was a personal military guard to accompany the existing garrison of 3,000 soldiers, along with six ships on constant patrol of the coastal waters, and an array of heavier ships moored off the capital, Jamestown. In 1819, the 20th Regiment of Foot arrived on the island and were assigned as Napoleon's guard at his residence, Longwood House. This item has been inscribed with the emblem of the 20th Foot and is also inscribed 'Longwood House', so we can say with confidence that this would have been crafted by one of his close guard. A further inscription 'quis custodiet' translates as 'who will guard', again making clear reference to the maker's position. Napoleon died at Longwood on the 5th May 1821. This date has been inscribed on the corer followed by the word 'vale', being the Latin for 'farewell'. On the day of his funeral, Napoleon's casket was carried by twelve grenadiers of his house guard. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
Cyrus Edwin Dallin (American, 1861-1944): A rare patinated bronze equestrian figure entitled 'Appeal to the Great Spirit' presented to the Rt. Hon. David Lloyd George whilst visiting the USA in October 1923depicting a Native American Indian (Sioux) chief seated on his horse wearing a feathered headdress and with outstretched arms, raised on a naturalistic rectangular base, signed and dated,C.E.Dallin 1913 and with circled 'C' copyright mark, the end of the base inscribed GORHAM CO FOUNDERS ma OXC, and one side also numbered #122, 22.5cm highFootnotes:Provenance:Presented to the Rt. Hon. David Lloyd George during his trip to the USA in October 1923.Gifted to Frances Louise Stevenson (1888-1972), personal secretary, mistress and confidante to David Lloyd George and later in 1943, Mrs Frances Lloyd George, subsequently Countess Lloyd George of Dwyfor, CBE, after the death of Lloyd George's first wife Dame Margaret in 1941. Thence by descent to Jennifer Longford, née Stevenson (1929-2012), daughter of Frances Stevenson and possibly (now generally assumed) David Lloyd George.Thence by descent to the present owner and vendor in 2012.David Lloyd George:David Lloyd George, 1st Earl Lloyd-George of Dwyfor, OM PC (British, 1863-1945) was a British statesman and Liberal Party politician from Wales who had a long and distinguished political career in Britain. He initially served as Chancellor of Exchequer, later Minister of Munitions and then Minister of War before becoming Prime Minister between 1916 and 1922, when he ousted his then party leader Herbert Asquith. As the last Liberal to serve as Prime Minister, he held the office during the final two years of the First World War and led the British delegation at the 1919 Paris Peace Conference where he was principal negotiator. The conference subsequently saw the signing of 'The Treaty of Versailles' by the 'Big Four' which aside from Lloyd George for Great Britain, included the US President, Woodrow Wilson, the French Prime Minister, George Clemenceau and the Italian Statesmen, Vittorio Emanuele Orlando. However, Lloyd George's tenure as Prime Minister ended in 1922 after the Conservatives withdrew their support from his coalition government. Lloyd George visited the United States and Canada in the autumn of 1923. Accompanied by his wife, Margaret, their youngest daughter, Megan and his private secretary, A. J Sylvester, the purpose of the tour was to personally thank both countries for their help during the Great War and was a resounding international success. A contemporary British Pathe newsreel clip entitled 'Welcome, Lloyd George!' from October 1923 (available to view online), documents the arrival of the Welsh statesmen and politician to great acclaim. It includes footage of the huge street parades that were held in his honour and captions to the silent film include 'Biggest crowds in New York streets since homecoming of US', '(U.S.) Troops greet the 'Wizard of Wales' and 'Bombarded by hundreds of cameramen.'A further contemporary Pathe Gazette newsreel clip from later that month entitled 'In Minneapolis' - 'L.L. G.' meets Sioux Chief - 'Two Eagle' – eagle in peace, eagle in war' (also available to view online) further documents Lloyd George meeting and accepting gifts from the Chief and other elderly statesmen of the Sioux tribe and this can be viewed under 'Ll G Sioux Chief Aka Lloyd George – Sioux Chief (1923)'Lastly a black and white documentary photographic image (available to view online at www.bonhams.com) from this same meeting at Minneapolis illustrates the meeting of Lloyd George and Chief 'Two Eagle' and other members of the Sioux tribe and was used in the New York times, published 23rd October 1923 entitled 'Lloyd George on the warpath: the British War Premier' A possible explanation for why Lloyd George came to visit Minneapolis and why he was presented with the current lot which depicts a Sioux warrior can be confirmed in a historical biography of the Sioux physician Charles Ohiyesa Eastman and his Euro-American wife Elaine Goodale by Gretchen Cassel Eick, entitled 'They Met at Wounded Knee – The Eastmans' story'In the biography, Eick comments that in 1922 the US Secretary of the Interior appointed Charles Eastman to a national advisory 'Committee of One Hundred' to make recommendations to the President on Native American policy. 'The 'Committee of One Hundred' proposed reversing the policy of banning (Native) Indian dances and ceremonies. It recommended providing scholarships to allow (Native) Indians to attend public schools and colleges whilst improving the health conditions on reservations, all positions Charles Eastman advocated'.Eick then pertinently comments 'That year (1923) Eastman organised a reception for David Lloyd George.. who wished to meet some American (Native) Indians. Charles made sure that Lloyd George's wish was more than fulfilled'.Eick then confirms that at the meeting which took place on October 15th 1923 'Eastman led a delegation from the Cheyenne River Reservation to the Madison Hotel, Minneapolis, where they presented the Prime Minister (Lloyd George) with a peace pipe, headdress and an honorary Lakota name. The prime minister's adoption by the tribe was recorded on film, and President Calvin Coolidge wrote to Eastman that it was the most memorable part of Lloyd George's American visit'Cyrus Edwin Dallin: Cyrus Edwin Dallin was an American sculptor who created more than two hundred and sixty works during his career in a variety of subjects and was also an accomplished painter and an Olympic archer. However, he is best remembered for his heroic-scale public tributes in honour of America's indigenous peoples. As a child, Dallin was close to Ute families who lived on the nearby Springville settlement, and he had a deep respect for their culture and history. Because of this he was profoundly disturbed by the crimes he witnessed being perpetrated against them and other native tribes by the US government. As such his sculptures were intended as admiring personal reflections and social and political comments on their resilience in the face of ongoing subjugation. The offered lot of 'Appeal to the Great Spirit' is a reduction of the monumental group located in front of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Massachusetts which is arguably Dallin's most famous work. It was exhibited at the National Sculpture Society in 1908 and awarded a gold medal at the Paris Salon of 1909 before being finally unveiled in Boston in 1912. Dallin confirmed that the piece depicted a mounted Sioux chief engaged in prayer with a higher power after defeat by the U.S. Army, commenting that he had captured the moment when the chief had made his'final appeal to the Great Spirit' after 'his signal of peace...had been rejected'. It was the fourth and final work in a series of equestrian sculptures that Dallin completed between 1890 and 1909 which he collectively called 'The Epic of the Indian'. In the first quarter of the twentieth century over four hundred authorised small-scale bronze casts of 'Appeal to the Great Spirit' were produced in three different sizes, this cast being the smallest size. Of Napoleonic interest: A terracotta bust of Prince Eugène de Beauharnais (1781-1824), known as the 'Prince of Milan'Possibly workshop of Joseph Chinard (French, 1756-1813), early 19th centuryThe bust cast and hand modelled, the sitter looking slightly to dexter wearing an embroidered high-collared coat, sash and military decorations, on an integral waisted square socle, inscribed verso chinard De Lyon, and indistinctly inscribed S.A.S. Le prince Eugène/ le roi à Milan, 28cm high Footnotes:Eugène Rose de Beauharnais, Duke of Leuchtenberg (French, 1781-1824) was a French nobleman, statesman and military commander who served during the French Revolutionary Wars and the Napoleonic Wars.Through the second marriage of his mother, Joséphine de Beauharnais, he famously became the stepson of Napoleon Bonaparte. Under the French Empire he also became Napoleon's adopted son although not the heir apparent to the imperial throne. Considered to be one of the ablest of Napoleon's relatives he commanded the Army of Italy during the Napoleonic Wars, and was Viceroy of the Kingdom of Italy under his stepfather. French School, 19th centuryPortrait of a French cavalry officer at the Battle of Smolensk, Napoleon mounted on white horse in the backgroundinscribed 'Prise de Smolinsky/Par la grande armée, en aout/1812' (lower left) watercolour and gouache 62.2 x 99.1cm (24 1/2 x 39in).Footnotes:Lieutenant of the Chasseurs à Cheval of the Imperial Guard at Smolensk, 1812This attractive work depicts an incident during Napoleon's fateful campaign against Russia during 1812. Having defeated the Russians in 1807 and come to an accord in the Treaty of Tilsit, relations between Tsar Alexander I and the French Emperor deteriorated in the following years. Russia resented the ban imposed on its exports of naval timber to Great Britain, was displeased by the establishment of a newly independent Poland and was deeply offended by Napoleon's rejection of the Tsar's sister as his second wife in favour of an Austrian princess. Renewed conflict was inevitable.Napoleon's army - 250,000 French troops and the same number of 'allies', mostly Poles and Germans - entered Russia on 22nd June 1812 and advanced steadily against two retreating Russian armies. Only relatively minor clashes occurred during the 350-mile advance to Smolensk, which was reached in mid-August. The Russians made a stand at Smolensk with Lieutenant-General Raevsky's Corps holding off the Emperor in a bloody two-day battle while the main Russian armies slipped away to fight another day. Napoleon continued his advance, fought the indecisive battle of Borodino on 7th September and occupied Moscow, but was forced into a disastrous retreat by the Russians burning their own capital and the exhaustion of his supplies. The Emperor's forces - about 20,000 survivors - left Russian on 14th December. The principal subject of the painting is an officer of the Chasseurs à Cheval of the Imperial Guard. This regiment of Light Cavalry, best known from the dramatic painting by Théodore Gericault in the Louvre, was a favourite unit of Napoleon's and he was often depicted in its Undress uniform. The regiment acted as the Emperor's mounted escort and is seen at far right following Napoleon's staff with the Emperor in front on a grey horse. Unusually for a campaign setting, the lieutenant is wearing Full Dress comprising leather breeches, dark green horse furniture and dolman and the scarlet pelisse. The Imperial Guard was Napoleon's Corps d'Elite of specially-chosen soldiers who were always reserved in battle to give the final shocking charge to break the enemy after the Line regiments had worn down the opposition. The background of the painting shows serried ranks of infantry and cavalry advancing against the city and the billowing gunpowder smoke of thousands of muskets and hundreds of cannon. The middle ground behind the mounted officer features troops from units of the Imperial Guard including from left to right - Grenadiers in bearskin caps, a Chasseur, a Polish Lancer, a Horse Grenadier and one of the Empress's Dragoons. Two Mamelukes of the Guard and a Gendarme d'élite appear under the horse and at far right Foot Artillerymen and a Dutch Lancer of the Guard are gathered round a fire.We are grateful to Dr. Andrew Cormack for his assistance in cataloguing this lot.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
Australian Convict Interest: a Victorian silver presentation snuff boxEdward Smith, Birmingham 1847 Rectangular form with shaped edge, the hinged cover featuring a central engraved presentation inscription 'Presented to EDWARD PHILIPSON ESQ., BY THE OFFICERS OF HM 96 REGT. by his Passengers on board the Ratcliff, as a small token of esteem for his unceasing kindness during the Voyage from the Australian Colonies to Calcutta, 1849', flanking an engraved and chased scrolling foliate and floral border, the decoration echoed on the sides and base, a raised thumbpiece to the edge, opening to reveal a gilt interior, height 2.5cm, length 9.5cm, weight 5.9oz.Footnotes:This snuff box was presented to Edward Philipson Esq, Captain of the sea-going ship the 'Ratcliff' (sometimes spelt 'Ratcliffe'), by the Officers of HM 96th Regiment, thanking Philipson for his 'unceasing kindness' during their voyage from Van Diemen's Land (later Tasmania) to Calcutta in 1849. On the surface this looks a fairly innocent tale, however on investigation, this small box represents a brutal yet influential period in the history of Australia and its colonies.Captain Edward Philipson (sometimes spelt 'Phillipson') was born in Birtley, near Newcastle upon Tyne in 1804. He was known to captain convict ships from British and Irish ports over to the Australian Colonies, in particular Van Diemen's Land, enduring the long hazardous passage there and back. Most of these ships were un-modified British merchant vessels, mainly square rigged or barques, with the majority being small to moderate in size. The fees paid to the ship owners for the transportation of prisoners to far-off penal colonies were so low that only the worst and most decrepit ships were utilised. From research it can be ascertained that prior to the 'Ratcliff', Edward Philipson was also Captain of the 'William Metcalfe' and surprisingly on most voyages was accompanied by his wife. Each ship was able to hold around 240 prisoners, the crew, plus additional fee-paying passengers and cargo. In addition to the crew and convicts, the vessel would have carried cows, sheep, pigs and poultry used during the voyage to provide fresh milk, eggs and meat. Various convict trips on the 'William Metcalfe' are recorded, and Philipson appears to have taken over captaincy of the 739 ton 'Ratcliff' in circa 1845.Van Diemen's Land (later Tasmania), Philipson's main destination, was the primary penal colony in Australia and had a reputation as the most brutal. The English Establishment saw an opportunity to use transportation as a way to get rid of its criminal classes, and in addition Britain itself would benefit trade wise in the region, and in particular from China. A series of coastal outposts would also establish a defence and supply chain for the Royal Navy and the merchant vessels. While the Regiments were primarily deployed for guard duty, they also served to protect the Empires interests in the Pacific region. This is where the 2nd Battalion of HM 96th Regiment enter the picture, brought in by the British Army to act as convict guards in mainland Australia and then later Van Diemen's Land. They attempted to keep order, but often contributed to disorder through their use of legalised brutality. From 1839 to 1841 the 96th Regiment served as guards at several locations in Australia, with the Regimental Head Quarters moving to Van Diemen's Land in 1843. The Regiment remained in Van Diemen's Land until March 1849, when they sailed to India. It is at this point the 96th Regiment were transported by Philipson on the 'Ratcliff' to Calcutta, leaving their convict duties behind them – hence the inscription on the snuff box. The 96th Regiment then served under the British East India Company in Calcutta, moving to South Africa in 1863, before returning to India in 1868 for 5 years.Over the 80 years of convict transportation, between 1788 and 1868, 608 convict ships such as the 'Ratcliff' transported more than 162,000 convicts to Australia, often in penance for crimes as petty as stealing a loaf of bread. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
