A fine pair of 17th century Italian carved walnut bellows, the facing side carved with the moment Actaeon stumbles upon Diana, secretly bathing in a clearing, the reverse simply carved with a mask and scroll work, the handles as figures 59 x 26cm (23 x 10in) Provenance: Private collection, Somerset Exhibited: International Art Treasures Exhibition, The British Antique Dealers' Association Ltd, Assembly Rooms, Bath, 1973. No 96, Plate 74 Other Notes: The carving was previously thought to depict Moses with his staff dividing the Red Sea with his brother Aaron and sister Miriam leading the Children of Israel to safety. It is now believed to be the myth of Diana and Actaeon found in Ovid's Metamorphoses. Actaeon stumbles across Diana bathing in a spring with her nymphs. The nymphs try to cover Diana who, in her anger, splashes water upon Actaeon. He is transformed into a deer and flees from the scene, but before long is tracked down and killed by his own hounds. A similar dated bellows depicting Vulcan's forge can be found at the Victoria and Albert Museum.

The first octagonal table exhibited by the Falcini brothers at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence was purchased by Grand Duke Leopold II for his private collection. They exhibited at the Great Exhibition in London in 1851 to great acclaim.
