Army L.S. & G.C., V.R., 3rd issue, small letter reverse (820. Lance Corpl. J. Ashworth, 46th. Foot) minor edge nicks, very fine £100-£140 --- Joseph Ashworth was born in Leeds in 1839 and attested for the 47th Regiment of Foot at Rochdale on 16 October 1857. He transferred to the 97th Regiment of Foot on 30 April 1858, and then to the 46th Regiment of Foot on 23 August 1866. He was appointed a Lance-Corporal on 7 July 1876, and was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, together with a gratuity of £5, per General Order 33 of 1877. He was discharged on 29 October 1878, after 21 years and 14 days’ service, of which 9 years and 4 months were spent soldiering in India. This is his sole medallic entitlement. Sold with copied service papers and other reserch.
A khaki cotton Ashworth golf jacket (with polyester lining), blue cotton John W. Nordstrom button-up shirt, and green wool baseball cap from the production Fun with Dick and Jane (Columbia Pictures, 2005) with costume tags bearing the name Alec Baldwin, who plays Jack McCallister in the film. The cap and jacket are customized with patches bearing the logo of Globodyne, the corporation owned by Jack McCallister. In the film, Jim Carrey plays Dick, the Vice President of Communications at Globodyne who discovers that, because of McCallister's fraudulent practices, the company has gone bankrupt and all of its employees have lost their jobs. McAllister wears a jacket and cap of this style in a scene in which Dick tries to confront him as he takes off in the company helicopter (the cap and patches shown on-screen are different colors). A Very Unusual Second World War Civilian British Empire Medal to a Member of the Women’s Land Army, British Empire medal (Civil) GVIR, 1st issue, engraved naming “MISS THELMA ALICE ASHWORTH BIRTWISTLE” mounted on original bow ribbon. With an original copy of ‘The Land Girl’ magazine dated February 1944 which mentions the recipient.London Gazette 4th January 1944 - The KING has been graciously pleased to approve the award of the British Empire Medal (Civil Division) to the undermentioned: Miss Thelma Birtwistle, Member of the Women's Land Army, Inglesham, Wiltshire.Born on 23rd August 1921 in Blackburn, Lancashire, in 1939 she is a Lady Groom residing at the Lancashire County Institute of Agriculture at Hutton near Preston. She enrolled in the Women’s Land Army (No. 9825) being based on a farm in Wiltshire from October 1939 being a second herdsman to a pedigree herd.She married Aubrey Charles Woolford on 14th August 1963 in Inglesham, Wiltshire. Thelma Woolford died in September 2001 in Cirencester, Gloucestershire.

Volumes I - IV only (of VI), large 8vo (231 x 155mm). Half titles, half tone plates, maps. Original dark blue cloth gilt, map endpapers (without slipcases). Provenance: Anthony Eden, 1st Earl of Avon (modern armorial bookplate loosely-inserted). FIRST EDITION, with 'A' on the copyright page of each volume, of the work for which the author won his second (posthumous) Pulitzer Prize in 1958. After the fifth and sixth volumes (not present here), a seventh, written by John Alexander Carroll and Mary Wells Ashworth, but based substantially on Freeman's research and notes, was published in 1957. PRESENTATION COPY, the half title of the first volume inscribed, "Autographed for The Right Honorable Anthony Eden in admiring gratitude for his service in advancing those interests of English-speaking peoples that Washington revered. Douglas Southall Freeman, July, 1950." It is clear, from the date of the inscription, that the author presented Anthony Eden with the first four volumes only (the fourth volume dated 1951 presumably being first issued in 1950), as are present here. Loosely-inserted in the second volume is a clipping from the Swindon Advertiser (Oct. 12th, 1959) featuring an opinionated and amusing letter relating to Anthony Eden and the Suez Crisis from one G. Rogers, marked [?by Eden] with two pencil crosses. With the same author's R. E. Lee. A Biography (New York, 1937, 4 vols., large 8vo, original red cloth, a reprint of the work for which the author won his first Pulitzer Prize in 1935, old armorial bookplate of Anthony Eden) and Lee's Lieutenants. A Royal Navy green glass Lime Juice bottle: stamped with broad arrow mark, together with a P&O coffee cup by Ashworth Brothers and two liner and yacht club related glasses. *Notes- The benefits of citrus juice in preventing scurvy were observed by James Lind in the 18th century and the disease was almost eliminated from the Royal Navy by 1800. The problem persisted within the merchant navy in the first half of the 19th century until the 1867 Merchant Shipping Amendment Act which brought in compulsory administration of lime juice under supervision.
