Victoria (1819-1901). Queen of Great Britain & Ireland, 1837-1901. Vignetted cabinet card portrait of John Brown in profile [by George Washington Wilson, Aberdeen], c. 1870s, albumen print, inscribed in blue ink by Queen Victoria in lower blank area of image, 'J. Brown - the Queen's truest friend', set in a contemporary silver-plated desk frame with plush-lined backing and original inlaid hinged morocco case with fastener by Edwards & Jones, 161 Regent Street, [London], 19 x 15 cm overall QTY: (1)NOTE:Richard Assheton Cross, 1st Viscount Cross, (1823-1914), was born in Red Scar, near Preston, Lancashire. A lawyer and banker, Cross was a Conservative member of the House of Commons from 1857 to 1862 and from 1868 (when he defeated Gladstone for a Lancashire constituency) until 1886. In 1874 Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli appointed him home secretary. The Cross Act of 1875 empowered municipalities to buy and demolish slums and to build housing for rental. In the same year Cross carried through Parliament the Factory Act, regulating the employment of women and children in textile mills; the Public Health Act, a comprehensive sanitary code; and two statutes reinterpreting Gladstone’s trade-union legislation of 1871. Cross left office with Disraeli in 1880, served again as home secretary in the 3rd Marquess of Salisbury’s brief ministry of 1885-86, was created viscount in 1886, and held the secretaryship for India from that year until 1892. From 1895 to 1900 he was lord privy seal.'Cross was a fellow of the Royal Society, a bencher of the Inner Temple, and an ecclesiastical commissioner, and was keenly interested in the affairs of the church. His honours included, besides the viscountcy, the GCB (1880) and GCSI (1892). He was among the small band of her ministers to whom Queen Victoria gave her close personal friendship, and he was a trustee of more than one royal marriage settlement' (ODNB online). Cross may now be best remembered as one of the country's outstanding home secretaries but some of the material offered here (lots 208-227), by direct descent from the family, reveals his close relationship with Queen Victoria. He is mentioned frequently in her journals (online) from 1877 until 1900, often as a guest at the royal residences of Balmoral, Windsor and Osborne.John Brown (1826-1883) was a Scottish gillie and a favourite servant of Queen Victoria. Though unliked by most other members of the royal family the exact nature of his relationship with Victoria has been the subject of great speculation. Brown became a strong friend and supporter of Victoria after the death of Prince Albert in 1861 and she was known to have given him numerous gifts as well as creating two medals for him, the Faithful Servant Medal and the Devoted Service Medal, both of which he is seen wearing in this portrait.

They involved dressing up in costumes with plenty of props and creating a scene from a story before remaining completely still to hold the pose as a living picture for the photographer. Queen Victoria and Albert were fond of such activities with which they included their children, friends and members of the royal household.NB. An amendment regarding the contents of the fourth album has been made to this description.
Victoria (1819-1901). Queen of Great Britain & Ireland, 1837-1901. Autograph note on personal stationery, Balmoral Castle, c. 1880, a note relating to a gift, '1 of 7 Asseguis sent the Queen by General Crealock to whom they had been surrendered by Zulu Chiefs', embossed stationery with monogram and crest at head, slightly dust-soiled, one page, 8vo, contemporary wooden picture frame, glazed, 22 x 15.5 cm overallQTY: (1)NOTE:Richard Assheton Cross, 1st Viscount Cross (1823-1914), British statesman and Conservative politician who served as Home Secretary 1874-1880 & 1885-1886.Lieutenant-General Henry Hope Crealock (1831-1891) was a British soldier, artist and author. In the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 he commanded the first division, and for his services was created CMG and received a medal with a clasp. This would appear to be a wall display note for the artefact mentioned. An assegai was a Zulu weapon, usually a light spear or javelin made up of a wooden handle and an iron tip. Queen Victoria clearly became familiar with assegais and mentions them a number of times in her journal between 1879 and 1891. The Royal Collection Trust has six assegais sent to the queen by Sir Bartle Frere in 1878 (RCIN 67872).

Accompanied by the original Sotheby’s purchase receipt and catalogue, and two press cuttings from The Telegraph dated 25 May 1979 and 15 June 1979. The lot was purchased by the vendor directly from Sotheby’s in 1979. Her Royal Highness Princess Margaret Rose, (1930-2002) was the younger daughter of the Duke and Duchess of York and sister to Princess Elizabeth, now Queen Elizabeth II. Born at Glamis, the ancestral home of the Duchess of York, the Princess was the first royal baby to be born in Scotland since the year 1600. The family lived in London Piccadilly until 1936, when the abdication of King Edward VIII and the ascension of the Duke of York to King George VI, moved the family to Buckingham Palace and the residences of Windsor Castle, Sandringham House and Balmoral Castle. Now second in line to the throne, Princess Margaret was to live her life in the public eye, becoming one of the world’s most celebrated socialites, iconised for her striking beauty, style and taste. From an early age the Princess fully engaged with the Royal Family’s public work and went on to become patron or president of over eighty organisations. With a particular interest in the fields of welfare and the arts, her roles ranged from President of the National Society and Royal Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children to Honorary Doctor of Music at London University and President of the Royal Ballet. On 6 May 1960 the Princess married the photographer Anthony Armstrong-Jones at Westminster Abbey. The following year he was created Earl of Snowdon and Viscount Linley. The couple, residing at Kensington Palace, went on to have two children; Lord Linley, born 3 November 1961 and Lady Sarah Chatto, born 1 May 1964. The marriage of Princess Margaret and Lord Snowdon was dissolved in May 1978. The following year, Princess Margaret sold a collection of seven personal jewels at Sotheby’s, comprising five brooches, one pendant and a pair of earrings, this Art Deco brooch being one of the items offered for sale. The collection raised £11,000. Princess Margaret’s love of jewellery, and brooches in particular, was evident throughout her life, always accessorising her outfits with carefully chosen examples. The Princess favoured this diamond brooch for numerous state functions and special engagements throughout the 1950s and 60s, usually pinning the brooch to the blue sash of the Royal Victorian Order, on her right shoulder, and wearing alongside several important Royal jewels. Princess Margaret was appointed Dame Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order ahead of Queen Elizabeth II’s Coronation in June 1953. In 1956 Princess Margaret departed London for a five-week official tour of East Africa. At a banquet in Port Louis, Mauritius, the Princess is photographed wearing this brooch together with the Cartier rose brooch, Queen Mary’s diamond rivière and the Cartier Halo tiara. In 1958 Princess Margaret attended a banquet celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Royal Air Force and wore this brooch again with Queen Mary’s diamond rivière and the Cartier Halo tiara. Princess Margaret purchased the Poltimore tiara for her wedding in 1960 and it is perhaps this tiara in particular that became famously associated with her. On 10 July 1962, Princess Margaret is photographed at Buckingham Palace dressed in a pink satin evening gown and wearing the Royal Victorian Order with this diamond brooch, the Poltimore tiara and again her favourite necklace, Queen Mary’s rivière. Later that year, in August, Princess Margaret and Lord Snowdon visited the Caribbean island of Jamaica, where the Princess represented her sister Queen Elizabeth II at the island’s celebrations of Independence, gained after more than 300 years of British rule. On 6 August, Princess Margaret opened the first session of the Jamaican Parliament in Kingston, again wearing this brooch on her right shoulder over the Royal Victorian Order, with the Lotus Flower tiara to her hair.
1997 Rover Mini MPi Balmoral Edition Make: RoverModel: Mini Year: 1997Mileage: 28095VIN: SAXXNWAZEBD137807Configuration: Right Hand DriveRegistration: P617GANTransmission: manualRover's Mini Balmoral came with 12in 'Premium' 'Pepperpot' alloy wheels although there was also the option of the Sport Pack kit, which upgraded the wheels to 13in alloys with wide wheelarches - as on this car. Inside, the seats were Balmoral stone beige (optional full leather available) with 'Balmoral' tartan cloth inserts. This example is finished in Tahiti Blue body colour. The vendor bought this 1997 model because he loved Minis, but as it didn't receive that much use, he sold it to his gardener. However, when he moved away, the vendor bought it back again. In recent times, it has been mainly used for club nights and car events, and dry-stored when not being used. The current mileage shown on the odometer is 28,095 miles and although this can't be totally warranted, the very good overall condition of the car and lack of wear inside the cabin suggests it's the true figure. In addition, a print-out of the online MoT history shows that, in 2005, its mileage was just 23,008 miles. The history file includes the V5C, showing the car was registered in March 1997 and has four former registered keepers since then. Its MoT is valid until March 2023 and the certificate is present, as is the previous certificate from 2021. In December 2003, the Mini was the subject of a Category D insurance loss; vehicle damaged but repairable - insurer decided not to repair.
