* Gillray (James). The Loss of the Faro-Bank; or The Rook's Pigeon'd. "When Greek meets Greek then comes the tug of War!" published by H. Humphrey, February 2nd 1797, etching with contemporary hand-colouring, thread margins, some old adhesion scarring to verso, 250 x 355 mmQTY: (1)NOTE:BM Satires 9078.One of four satirical prints produced by Gillray on the subject of illegal gambling, facilitated by 'ladies of fashion'. On this occasion, the somewhat portly Lady Buckinghamshire is made aware that her 'bank' of £500 has been stolen. Several commentators suggested that Lady Buckingham herself was responsible for the disappearance of the money, and a subsequent trial for illegal gambling further sated the public's salacious appetites. Gillray - never one to miss an opportunity to satirise Whig politicians - includes Fox and Sheridan among the gamblers around the table. Gillray's satire is completed by the caption to the print derived from the play The Rivals Queens (1677) by Nathaniel Lee: ' When Greek meet Greek, then comes the tug of war'; emphasising the point that all the participants were thieves and cheats and all of them were guilty.
An interesting archive of documents relating to Major Friedrich Rose, a WW1 veteran who later went on to serve in WW2, serving in various Anti-Aircraft units in Austria, Slovakia, Germany, Norway, and Russia. He was later captured by the American army, and was held captive until September 6th 1945. Interestingly, there is an original handwritten letter by Friedrich (dated 1948) talking about his life, war service and career, which also includes a period type written transcription of the letter, and a modern English translation. He was born on September 12th 1897 in Weltersbach, the son of a retired senior teacher. He served in the Imperial German armed forces from September 22nd 1914, through to January 13th 1919, noting in his letter that he was wounded 3 times. He would later, albeit briefly, serve with the Reichswehr, and the State Police, before being employed with a bank, and as an accountant with an insurance business. In his later career he would go on to become a chief customs officer, with some of his paperwork noting his occupation as being Ober-Zollinspektor. Friedrich was again drafted into military service during WW2, again suffering injuries as a result of his service, which went on to leave with 40% reduced earning capacity. The archive includes amongst other items, a scarce scroll the promises to protect the Fuhrer’s life, an Ausweis identification document, a POW document that notes he was a member of the NSDAP from 1931-1945, and lists his rank as Major. There also other pre and post war documents. Please note that not all the documents in the lot are pictured. Condition: generally good. Some normal age and service related wear, including light soiling to the paper, fold lines and ragged edges, but all of the printed and written information remains clear.

PRINCIPAUTÉ D'ORANGE -- LIVRE CONTENANT les Edictz, Reiglemens & Ordonaces faittes par Son Excellence et sa Cour de Parlement en la Principauté d'Orange. Late 16th, early 17th c. ms. in French on paper by various (3 or 4?) hands. (138) lvs. Sm-fol. Cont. vellum. (Ties fail, a bit waterstained towards end, but in fine condition). NOTE: The Principality of Orange was, from 1163 to 1713, a feudal state in Provence (Fr) on the east bank of the river Rhone, north of the city of Avignon, and surrounded by the independent papal state of Comtat Venaissin. As an independent enclave within France, Orange became an attractive destination for Protestants and a Huguenot stronghold. William III of Orange, who ruled England as William III of England, was the last Prince of Orange to rule the principality. William the Silent, later stadtholder in various Dutch regions, became Prince of 'Oranghien' (Orange) in 1544 and founded the Orange-Nassau dynasty - but was only able to exercise real power over the principality since 1559. After his death, it fell to his sons Philip Willem, Maurits and Frederik Hendrik. - This manuscript contains legible copies of together 41 state and legal documents issued by the rulers of Orange (France) from March 1st 1571 up to January 1st 1619 concerning political matters, taxes, religion, etc. - Added: Transcript in pencil in separate binding, written by the consigner, with an index at the end.
