Colin Middleton RUA RHA (1910 - 1983)Seated Figure with Yellow Coffee Pot (1972)Oil on board, 92 x 91cm (36 x 36")Signed; also signed, inscribed with title and dated 1972 versoProvenance: With David Hendriks Gallery, Dublin, January 1973; Collection R. W. Wilson, DublinThe early 1970s was a period of significant recognition for Colin Middleton. He held a number of exhibitions with the Arts Council of Northern Ireland in the 1960s, culminating in a major retrospective covering the decade 1960-1970 that toured in Northern Ireland and Scotland. Middleton was also awarded a bursary by the Arts Council that allowed him to retire from teaching and to undertake some journeys that became highly significant to the development of his art at this time, first to Australia and then to Barcelona. Seated Figure with Yellow Coffee Pot appears to have been completed shortly before Colin and Kathleen Middleton departed on the long sea voyage to Australia which was partially to inspire the Wilderness Series of paintings. It continues aspects of his figure painting from the 1960s but the complexity and concentration of Middleton’s development also means that it foreshadows the last decade of his figure painting and connects with later paintings that are often seen as emerging from his visits to Barcelona, where his daughter Jane was living. This is particularly notable in the yellow that dominates the painting and recalls a group of paintings inspired by a visit to Bruges in 1965, while also prefiguring the dramatic use of high-pitched colour in Middleton’s later work, which was primarily influenced by the light of Spain and Australia. There is a classical division of the picture space, and shapes that form the female figure are repeated in the coffee pot, creating movement across the composition. The figure appears to be writing, introducing a suggestion of narrative that connects it with paintings in the 1960s of Middleton’s wife and daughters quietly engaged in activities such as reading or playing the piano. This painting also demonstrates the crucial role that Middleton’s design training and experience came to play in his art, with patterning and decoration creating balance and activity around the picture space and allowing the artist to maintain an ambiguous and almost mysterious mood without overbalancing it with the description of specific objects within the composition.Dickon Hall, January 2023

JOSÉ MIRABENT GATELL (Barcelona, 1831 - 1899)."Flowerpots", 1863.Oil on canvas.Signed and dated in the lower right corner.Provenance: private collection conceived since the 1970s between London and Madrid.Measurements: 53 x 38 cm (x2); 61 x 46,5 cm (frames, x2).Pair of vases presenting a similar composition, in type. However, the flowers vary, although in both canvases the same types of flowers are repeated and also the chromatism is similar.José Mirabent studied at the School of La Lonja in Barcelona, where he was a disciple of Pablo Milá Fontanals, Claudio Lorenzale and Segismundo Ribó, from whom he received the influence of the Nazarene aesthetics. In 1855 he joined the aforementioned school as an assistant and in 1872 became a teacher of decorative painting, textiles and prints. In his early years he can be considered a Romantic painter in the Nazarene style of his masters and painted mainly portraits and still lifes with flowers and fruit. He later specialised in interior decoration, an activity in which his works for the Gran Teatre del Liceu and the University of Barcelona, the Balaguer Museum in Vilanova i la Geltrú and the churches of Buen Suceso, the Salesas Reales and the convent of the Madres Reparadoras in Madrid are particularly noteworthy. With his paintings of flowers and fruit he took part in the National Exhibitions of Fine Arts in Madrid and won several prizes: honourable mention in those of 1856 and 1858, third medal in those of 1860 and 1867, and a decoration in 1871. He was also awarded a gold medal at the Universal Exhibition in Barcelona in 1888. As a portrait painter he portrayed Pablo Piferrer, Ramón Anglasells and Joaquín Rey Esteve, among others. In 1892 he took part in the First Modernist Festival. He is widely represented in the MNAC, as well as in the Museo del Prado, the Museo de Arte Moderno and the Museo Romántico in Madrid, the Real Academia de Sant Jordi, the Ateneo and the Galería de Catalanes Ilustres in Barcelona, etc.
JUAN GIRALT (Madrid, 1940-2007)."Zorra".Mixed media and collage on paper. With information labels on the back from Metta Gallery (Madrid) and Afinsart (Madrid).Signed in the lower left corner. Provenance: private collection conceived since the 1970s between London and Madrid.Measurements: 70 x 50 cm; 83 x 63 cm (frame).Juan Giralt began his artistic career as a self-taught artist in the fifties. In 1959 he had his first individual exhibition in the Galleria Fernando Fe in Madrid, and during that time he spent a brief stay in Holland, coming into contact with the CoBrA group. At this time he began to define a more personal pictorial language. In 1965 he exhibited at the São Paulo Biennial in Brazil and the Venice Biennial at the same time. Winner of a scholarship, he travelled to Paris in 1967, where he began to make various trips that led him to increase his artistic experience. In the same year 1967, he exhibited in Lisbon. After a series of exhibitions in Madrid and Seville, he organised an exhibition in South America in 1980, entitled Linea Espacio y Color en la Pintura Española Actual and a year later he travelled to New York where he lived for two years. From a formal point of view, the artist's research in Madrid has been characterised by the evolution of his aesthetics from the first works which were framed in the informal sector, to the pieces produced in the early seventies, close to a pop scene in which the use of silhouettes with well-defined edges predominated. In the eighties, after experiencing the charm of the New York style, he came into contact with informalism again, deciding to combine the drip technique with the use of collage. In 1997 his works were selected for the important exhibition Art Solidaritat at the Museo Nacional de Historia de Cataluña in Barcelona. Today some of his works belong to the collections of the Centro de Arte Reina Sofía and the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Sevilla.

ELENA BLASCO (Madrid, 1950).Untitled.Gouache and graphite on paper. With Estampa gallery label on the back.Signed in the lower right corner.Provenance: private collection conceived since the 70s between London and Madrid.Measurements: 23,5 x 31,5 cm; 56 x 46 cm (frame).Multidisciplinary Spanish artist who combines photography, painting and installation. With a subjective and ironic vision, she recreates everyday objects and supports to construct a personal and unique identity in her works, in some cases making reference to gender violence and social injustices. He graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at the Complutense University of Madrid in 1974, choosing painting as his speciality. He graduated in Photography and Decoration from the Escuela de Artes Plásticas de Madrid. He had his first exhibition in 1976, a decade in which conceptual experiences and political attitudes coexisted with the so-called 'new Madrid figuration', which demanded a return to painting and its expressive and conceptual potential. In the 1990s his work began to be appreciated and entered collections and museums. His artistic trajectory concentrates very diverse works, characterised by the play of colours and techniques, combining photography, painting and installation. However, despite the casual and lively atmosphere that is created around his productions, the aim and background of his works is paradoxically radical in terms of the meanings he projects, questioning clichés and canonical prejudices of today's society. In several of his works he deals with debates about gender. "Women have never been paid attention to, neither in art nor in anything else. That doesn't exist any more, it won't be able to be any more. Women of my age won't have time to see real equality, a lot of progress has been made but nothing for what we need". In her monographic exhibition "Millones y abundantes razones "6 7 8 in 2012 at the Sala Alcalá 31 of the Comunidad de Madrid, curated by Alicia Murría, she presented hundreds of works that showed her recognisable and original imaginary. Since 2002 she has also been a teacher at the Escuela de Artes y Oficios de Madrid, and is a member of the Asociación de Mujeres en las Artes Visuales MAV.
