HOWE RICHARD: (1726-1799) 1st Earl Howe. British Admiral of the Fleet, noted for his service during the American War of Independence and French Revolutionary Wars. A.L.S., Robert Howe, three pages, 4to, St. Helens (Isle of Wight) 30th May 1758, to a gentleman. Howes informs his correspondent, in part 'Being appointed to the command of a squadron of His Majesty ships destined to co-operate with a detachment of troops in a purposed descent on the neighbouring coast of France; and as the success of this expedition will very much depend upon the choice of such guides acquainted with the face of the country at and near the town of St. Maloes, and such able soldiers can be procured from your island; I am satisfied I need not say more in support of my request for your assistance… I am to desire in the same manner your concurrence with the Lieut. Governor on such means as you shall judge proper for preventing any discovery that might be made of the destination… till after the passing by of the fleet to the French coast; which I judge will be in a very few hours after the arrival of Captain Lendrick, the weather permitting.'With a quarter page neatly removed from the last page, not affecting the text or signature and some taped repairs to splits in the folds. FR The present correspondence refers to the raid on St Malo, which took place in early June 1758 when an amphibious British naval expedition landed close to the French port of St Malo in Brittany. While the town itself was not attacked, as had been initially planned, the British destroyed large amounts of shipping before re-embarking a week later. The naval forces were under the command of Richard Howe while the army was led by the Duke of Marlborough and Lord Sackville.

A Grand Tour Fan, circa 1780, double skin leaf mounted on ivory, centrally depicting the Pantheon in Rome with a further vignette of classical ruins at either side, one showing possibly the pyramid of Cestius, the other with three columns, possibly the ruins of the Forum in Rome, within a background of mid blue painted mainly with floral sprays. Both guards are carved with flowers and each with a slightly different chinoiserie figure. Plain cream verso. Guard length 28.5cmIvory monture in fairly good order with a period repair to the lower guard, secured with tiny nails, and a piece of the ivory carving missing at the tip. The leaf is rubbed on the folds and has been re-glued to the lower guard at the point of repair. The carving on guards and gorge appears undamaged. The verso is lightly foxed. When closed the lower guard is slightly warped, the repair affecting the line slightly.
The Banishment of Hagar and Ishmael: An 18th Century Ivory Fan, with upper guards carved and pierced, the slender gorge sticks pierced. The upper guard is carved with a lady, the lower guard with a man, matching carving of perhaps a sunflower beneath each. The vellum leaf, mounted à l'anglaise, shows Hagar and Ishmael leaving the home of Abraham, the boy's father, as his wife Sarah had demanded. To the left, a further vignette of a landscape, to the right a classical stone ewer. The verso is painted with a simple flower spray. Guard length 26.5cmOne gorge stick is lacking a section but the stick is currently holding. The leaf is rubbed on the folds. The verso is quite stained and some ribs have been re-glued.
Autumnal Stroll: A Late 19th Century Wooden Fan, the guards shaped and painted with gold leaves and soft grey flowers, the gorge painted in quite lively colours, with butterflies. The double paper leaf has an air of autumn winds, with a couple to the left seemingly surrounded by tumbling leaves, some applied silver sequins adding to this effect, a parasol perhaps blown inside out. A further group of four, two finely dressed couples, could in fact be on the way to a wedding, a bouquet of flowers being held by one young lady, her beau in formal waistcoat and breeches, and a tricorn hat. The verso is cream and painted throughout with gold flowers of differing sizes. Guard length????Some of the gorge sticks need to be re-secured.
A Mid-19th Century Chinese Mandarin Fan, Qing Dynasty, the double paper leaf mounted on mother-of-pearl sticks, incised with figures, buildings and foliage. The recto, the central design bordered with flowers and vignettes of animals and buildings, depicts a large gathering of figures, many holding fans, their faces of painted ivory and their robes applied with silk, a pagoda and mountain scene in the distance. The verso, the border this time featuring mainly fish, has a vibrant design of flowers, a beetle, butterflies and several colourful birds. Pearl button to the rivet, guard length 28cm. Together with half a period box with the handwritten inscription sept 1857 to Mrs McFarlane from her sincere and affectionate friend (name indistinct)The leaf is rubbed on the folds, and has been re glued down near the gorge, not terribly noticeable. Both guards have nails at the shoulder where the leaf meets the gorge, one side is holding but the other needs to be redone.
A 19th Century Chinese Fan Sheath or Hanging Case, Qing Dynasty, cream silk appliqued on one side with lilac and green silk fabric, bordered with couched metallic thread, the other side finely embroidered in shades of blue and black, a tree branch with blossom on which are perched two birds with very detailed feathers, turquoise braid strap, lining of lilac silk. Length 32cmThe cream silk is grubby, the base of the sheath needs to be re-stitched.
A Circa 1700 or Perhaps Earlier Chinese Painted Ivory Brisé Fan, Qing Dynasty, with twenty-two sticks and two guards. The painting, reminiscent of painting on Chinese porcelain, uses mainly orange, green and gold. Excepting for two, and also the guards, the sticks are pierced. A central vignette, flanked by one either side of smaller size and different shape, contains delicate stylised painting of trees and flowers. To the left, a butterfly is collecting pollen from flowers, different flowers providing pollen for the insect in the vignette to the right. This design is repeated in the main on the verso, except that the gorge designs, albeit chinoiserie, differ. Similar decorative borders separate the vignettes from the gorge. A fish is painted on one inner guard. Both guards are delicately painted with gold highlights. A ribbon effect is painted to the stick tips but the sticks are in fact linked by thread. Guard length 25.5cmWork required to re-secure the sticks. One very small chip to a corner of a stick tip.
