Each lot thro-out is priced and totalled in pencil, orig. ptd. wrappers, worn, and torn with loss, also some browning. * This renown sale which took place over 8 days in 1890, consisted of 2218 lots, which realised approx. œ10,000 at the time, which would be the equivalent of almost œ1,000,000ÿ to-day. It contained one of the finest collections of original works by Shakespeare, to come for sale, at that time including the first four folio editions of his comedies, histories and tragedies, plus several excessively rare quarto editions of his works. The 'Most Pleasant and excellent conceited Comedie of Syr John Falstaff and the Merrie Wives of Windson,' First Edn., 4to realised œ385. There was also some magnificent bindings by Roffet dict Le Faucheux, Padeloup, Le Gascon Derome, and other eminent Binders. Important collection of works illustrated by Wm. Blake. Dean Gaisford's 'Magnum Opus' With Important Correspondence etc., included Gaisford (Dean Thomas)ÿEtymologicon Magnum, seu verius Lexicon saipissime vocabulorum origines indagans ex pluribus lexicis scholiastis et grammaticis anonymi cuisdam opera concinnatum. Lg. thick folio Oxford (e Typographeo Academico) 1848. Frontis fac-simile, engd. vignette on title, strongly bound cont. hf. calf, raised bands. With the Den's bookplate. The Etymologicum Magnum, compiled in Constantinople c 1150, is the largest Byzantine lexicon, collating and expanding the works of many previous scholars.ÿ It was first printed at Venice in 1499.ÿ Gaisford?s work, the fruit of much careful scholarship, remains the most recent complete edition. ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ This copy has tipped in at back: table giving details of print run and costs, also a review and an obituary of Gaisford.
