NICK BRANDT (England, 1964).'Wasteland with Elephant & residents' (Inherit The Dust series).2015.Archival pigment print, ed. 6/8.Reproduced on the cover of the book "Nick Brandt: Inherit the Dust",2016.Label of the gallery 3 Punts, Barcelona.Work referenced on the artist's website.Measurements: 66 x 140 cm; 85,5 x 162,5 cm(frame).Brandt's photographic work generally focuses on the rapid disappearance of the natural world as a result of environmental destruction, climate change and human action. In 2014, Brandt returned to East Africa to photograph the increasing changes in the continent's natural world. In a series of panoramic photographs, he recorded the impact of man in places where animals used to roam. At each location, he erected a life-size panel of one of his animal portrait photographs, setting the panels in a world of urban development, factories, wastelands and quarries. A book about the work, Inherit the Dust, was published in 2016. In the book, Brandt writes, "Right now we are living the antithesis of genesis. It took billions of years to arrive at a place of such wondrous diversity, and then, in just a few shockingly short years, an infinitesimal pinprick of time, to annihilate it." In LensCulture, editor Jim Casper stated, "The resulting wall-sized prints are impeccably beautiful and breathtaking, as well as deeply haunting. They convey the vast spaces and light of contemporary Africa with cinematic immersion and incredible detail. Standing in front of his images, the viewer is transported into the scenes, at times with awe and joy, and at other times with overwhelming sadness, despair and disgust." Photography critic Michelle Bogre further noted, "Nick Brandt's new photographic work, Inherit the Dust, is his visual cry of anguish about the coming apocalypse for animal habitats in Africa.... The resulting images are both beautiful and horrifying, because they illustrate the irreconcilable clash of past and present.

Lot 131

JOSÉ VELA ZANETTI (Milagros, Burgos, 1913 - Burgos, 1999)."Breaking bread", Milagros, 1972.Oil on panel.Signed, dated and located in the lower left corner.Attached certificate signed by the artist.A preparatory drawing for this work is published in the book "VELA ZANETTI" by Victoriano Crémer, 1974.Measurements: 150 x 250 cm; 165 x 264 cm (frame). From Milagros, his hometown, Vela Zanetti created a personal vision of the peasantry. In his works he gave birth to a true epic of the rural world, whose customs, people and work he represented with a profound sense of human dignity. The large-format panel presented here shows the splendid technique of the artist from Burgos, based on a masterly forceful stroke and a warm, richly nuanced chromaticism. In front of a field in his native Castile, a group of four peasants stop their daily chores to have lunch, leaving aside their sickles and other work tools. The four characters, arranged in a circle around the central snack while drinking from a wineskin and breaking a loaf of bread, reveal the sacred and solemn condition sought by Zanetti.Born in Milagros, in the province of Burgos, he moved to León with his family when he was a child. There he held his first exhibition in 1931. Supported by his father, after finishing high school he travels to Madrid for a few months to see exhibitions and visit the Prado Museum. Shortly afterwards he obtained a scholarship to visit Italy, granted by the Provincial Council of León. As a consequence of the Spanish Civil War he went to the Dominican Republic, where he remained until 1960. In Santo Domingo he started, together with other exiled artists, the National School of Fine Arts. During this period he held exhibitions and projects in Mexico, Colombia, Puerto Rico and the United States. In 1951 the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation of New York awarded him a grant for a singular project: the creation of a large-scale mural for one of the main spaces of the United Nations headquarters, in commemoration of the fiftieth anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This project definitively catapulted the master from Burgos, and is today considered his most important work both for its symbolic relevance and for its expressiveness and artistic quality. He himself said of this work: "I hope that those who contemplate this mural will realize that peace must be won, not once and forever, but every day, remembering the sufferings of the past and making real what men aspire to for the future". Vela Zanetti also painted other important murals, such as those on historical themes for the Provincial Council of Burgos or the frescoes of the old Ercilia Theater in Barahona, Dominican Republic. He was an academician of San Fernando, and Doctor Honoris Causa by the University of Burgos. The Centro Cultural de la Villa de Madrid held in 2001, under the title "Antológica", a retrospective exhibition on the work of Vela Zanetti, the most important to date. In 2009 an exhibition commemorating the tenth anniversary of his death was held at the Ángeles Penche gallery in Madrid. In short, an important exhibition dedicated to the work of Vela Zanetti, commemorating the centenary of his birth and the most complete anthology of this painter held to date, was held at the Fórum Evolución in Burgos. His works are currently preserved in the funds of the Caja Rural de Burgos and the Vela Zanetti Foundation in León, as well as murals in various cities in Spain, Santo Domingo, the United States, Colombia and Switzerland.

JOAN MIRÓ I FERRÀ (Barcelona, 1893 - Palma de Mallorca, 1983)."Congrés de Cultura Catalana", 1977.Lithograph on cardboard, copy 62/100.Signed and justified by hand.Printed by Litografias artisticas Damia Caus, Barcelona.Bibliography. Reproduced in the book: "Joan Miró Litógrafo VI: 1976-1981", by Patrick Cramer. P. 34. Nº 1109. Maeght Éditeur. Paris,Measurements: 84 x 63 cm .Joan Miró is formed in Barcelona, between the School of the Fish market and the Galí Academy. Already in the early date of 1918 he realizes his first exhibition, in the Galleries Dalmau of Barcelona. In 1920 he moved to Paris and met Picasso, Raynal, Max Jacob, Tzara and the Dadaists. There, under the influence of surrealist poets and painters, he matures his style; he tries to transpose surrealist poetry to the visual, based on memory, fantasy and the irrational. From this moment on, his style began an evolution that led him to more ethereal works, in which organic forms and figures were reduced to abstract dots, lines and spots of color. In 1924 he signed the first surrealist manifesto, although the evolution of his work, too complex, does not allow him to be ascribed to any particular orthodoxy. His third exhibition in Paris, in 1928, was his first great triumph: the Museum of Modern Art in New York acquired two of his works. He returned to Spain in 1941, and that same year the museum dedicated a retrospective to him that would mean his definitive international consecration. During the fifties he experimented with other artistic media, such as engraving, lithography and ceramics. From 1956 until his death in 1983, he lived in Palma de Mallorca in a sort of internal exile, while his international fame grew. Throughout his life he received numerous awards, such as the Grand Prizes at the Venice Biennale in 1954 and the Guggenheim Foundation in 1959, the Carnegie Prize for Painting in 1966, the Gold Medals of the Generalitat de Catalunya (1978) and of the Fine Arts (1980), and was named Doctor Honoris Causa by the universities of Harvard and Barcelona. Today his work can be seen at the Joan Miró Foundation in Barcelona, inaugurated in 1975, as well as in major contemporary art museums around the world, such as the Thyssen-Bornemisza, the MoMA in New York, the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid, the National Gallery in Washington, the MNAM in Paris and the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo.
