1990 Citroen 2CV6 'Dolly' Registration Number: G557 BRX Chassis Number: VF7AKZA00KA866377 Engine number: 0909533826 Described by the motoring writer L J K Setright as 'the most intelligent application of minimalism ever to succeed as a car' and a car of 'remorseless rationality', Citroën’s ‘Deux Chevaux’, or 2CV, is perhaps one of the most widely recognised vehicles in the world. Like the Volkswagen Beetle, the 2CV was conceived in the 1930s to make an affordable car for the masses, in the 2CV's case with an eye particularly on French rural use with simplicity, frugality and flexible suspension as major criteria. While neither were put into full production until after the Second World War, like the Beetle, the 2CV became not only a million-plus seller, but also one of the few cars in history to continue a single generation in production for over four decades. Over 3.8 million 2CVs were built in various factories around the world. The peak of sales in the UK was reached in 1986, thanks in part to the trendy 'Dolly' special editions, with production ending in 1990 due to toughening legislation. A 'late' 2CV manufactured in 1990, this 2CV6 Dolly was supplied new on 30 April 1990. It is fitted with the 602cc two-cylinder air-cooled engine mated to the four-speed manual gearbox. Finished in the desirable colour combination of maroon and cream, or 'plums and custard', with grey cloth interior upholstery, 'G557 BRX' is a very low mileage, seemingly original example. Mileage is extremely low with just 32,789 recorded miles from new at the time of cataloguing. In the vendor's ownership since December 2020, the 2CV is offered with two sets of keys and a history file containing an original book pack presented in the Citroën wallet. Further paperwork includes the handbook and service book, a selection of recent invoices and a current V5C. MOT valid until 23 August 2024. Condition ReportThe 'Dolly' has recently had some work done, details of the invoice are attached and sailed through the MOT without any advisories. There is an extensive history file, but nothing more recent than 2017. The paint and decals are a little faded and paint is thin on the bonnet, along the shape lines and one patch on the passenger door, showing a little of the pale blue undercoat paint on these highpoints There are of course other marks and the rear off-side mud guard is slighlty mis-shapen, viewing is strongly recommended to satisfy any potential purchaser as to condition. It has been cleaned and detailed recently and the fold back roof was a replacement in 2017.

2011 Bentley Continental GTC Speed A Registration Number: AU11 AKV Chassis Number: SCBDJ23WXBC070426 Engine Number: CKH004131In 2010, the Bentley Continental GT saw its first significant redesign since its initial launch in 2003. New technology, greater efficiency, state-of-the-art materials, a sleek new silhouette, and a sportier feel distinguished the new from the old.Equipped with a 6.0 litre, twin-turbocharged W12 engine, the GTC Speed produces 603bhp with a staggering top speed of 200 mph. FlexFuel compatible, the car will run both on standard pump fuel or E85 bioethanol and has a Torsen-based permanent four-wheel drive system as standard. This is an extremely low-mileage example which at the time of cataloguing shows a recorded 9,982 miles from new. Finished in Onyx Black with cream leather interior, it has been with the current vendor since 21 November 2012.The service handbook records the pre-delivery inspection in April 2011 by Bentley Norwich, then six subsequent services by Bentley Cambridge to September 2017. Two keys are present and paperwork includes the Continental GTC Speed handbook and service handbook. Original Bentley wind deflectors are present in their fitted case. With an extremely low mileage from new, this is a powerful, opulent, stunningly pretty, engineering tour de force. MoT-tested until 11 June 2024, it is ULEZ compliant.Condition ReportImages of the service book are attached, which is all the service history available. There is no mechanical report available, however the car starts, drives and stops as it should and has a current MOT test.We strongly recommend that all prospective buyers view the car to satisfy themselves of condition, despite the extremely low miles. There are some v ery small marks to the wheels and corroded wheel nut coversA scratch on the nearside front bumper and scuff marks on the inside of the drivers door

Marc Chagall (Russian/French, 1887-1985). Lithograph on Arches paper titled "Paris of Dream" depicting a dream-like depiction of Paris, 1969-1970. Pencil signed along the lower right; numbered 12/75 along the lower left. With a certificate of authenticity from Cass Publishing. As the artist described these works, "Visions of Paris which are perhaps the same and also different. Paris, reflection of my heart. I'd like to fade into it, not be alone with myself."Literature: Mourlot 600.Provenance: Cass Publishing, Minnetonka, Minnesota; Private Collection, Minnesota.Lot Essay:Marc Chagall (born Moishe Shagal) was a Russian-French artist of Belarusian Jewish origin. An early modernist, he was associated with several major artistic styles and created works in a wide range of artistic formats, including painting, drawings, book illustrations, stained glass, stage sets, ceramics, tapestries and fine art prints.Art critic Robert Hughes referred to Chagall as "the quintessential Jewish artist of the twentieth century" (though Chagall saw his work as "not the dream of one people but of all humanity"). According to art historian Michael J. Lewis, Chagall was considered to be "the last survivor of the first generation of European modernists". For decades, he "had also been respected as the world's pre-eminent Jewish artist". Using the medium of stained glass, he produced windows for the cathedrals of Reims and Metz, windows for the UN and the Art Institute of Chicago and the Jerusalem Windows in Israel. He also did large-scale paintings, including part of the ceiling of the Paris Opera. Before World War I, he travelled between Saint Petersburg, Paris, and Berlin. During this period he created his own mixture and style of modern art based on his idea of Eastern Europe and Jewish folk culture. He spent the wartime years in Soviet Belarus, becoming one of the country's most distinguished artists and a member of the modernist avant-garde, founding the Vitebsk Arts College before leaving again for Paris in 1923.He had two basic reputations, writes Lewis: as a pioneer of modernism and as a major Jewish artist. He experienced modernism's "golden age" in Paris, where "he synthesized the art forms of Cubism, Symbolism, and Fauvism, and the influence of Fauvism gave rise to Surrealism". Yet throughout these phases of his style "he remained most emphatically a Jewish artist, whose work was one long dreamy reverie of life in his native village of Vitebsk." "When Matisse dies," Pablo Picasso remarked in the 1950s, "Chagall will be the only painter left who understands what colour really is".Sight; height: 40 1/2 in x width: 28 in. Framed; height: 57 1/4 in x width: 45 in.Condition: The artwork is in good condition overall. There are no rips, major creases, or restorations. No issues when inspected under UV light. There is an approx. 7 inch long crease along the lower right margin. Several handling marks throughout the margins. Some wear to the deckled edge; possibly original to the artistic process. The work is titled with pencil along the lower margin of the verso. There is some light wear to the mat. Some light wear to the frame; framed under glass.

TWAIN MARK: (1835-1910) Samuel Langhorne Clemens. American writer and humourist. A fine, long A.L.S., Samuel, eight pages, 8vo, 'Study' [Hartford, Connecticut], n.d. ('Tuesday. P.M.', October 1880), to his wife, Olivia. Twain commences his letter in German, stating that he arrived at 7.15pm and continuing to inform his wife of the preparations being made at their house, 'Georg hat alles gethan wie du hast es befordert. - Also - eferydings else ist all und ganz gut gemacht' (Translation: 'George did everything as you requested. The hall carpets are lifted, the doors of the women's room and your bedroom are locked, the furniture is……removed. Oh no, I wasn't telling the truth: he didn't nail the cloth in front of the sideboard - Also - eferydings else is all very well done'), completing the remainder of the letter in English, writing, in part, 'I found Mr. Beals hard at work in the rain, with his decorations. With a ladder he had strung flags around our bedroom balcony & thence around to the porte cochere, which was elaborately flagged - thence all the flags of all nations were suspended from a line which stretched past the green house to the limit of our ground. Against each of the two trees on the mound half-way down to our gate stands a knight in complete armour. Piles of still bundled flags clutter up the ombra (to be put up) also gaudy shields of various shapes (arms of this & other countries); also some huge glittering arches & things, done in gold & silver paper, containing mottoes in big letters. I broke Mr. Beal's heart by persistently & inflexibly annulling & forbidding the biggest & gorgeousest of the arches - it had on it, in all the fines of the rainbow, "The Home of Mark Twain" in letters as big as your head. O, we're going to be decorated sufficient, don't you worry about that, Madam. At least I infer so, from what I have seen of Mr. Beals's hand & what he holds in reserve. I don't know but he is really going to decorate us too much. However, I'm letting him go on…..But wasn't it lucky that I arrived in time to bust up that Mark Twain business? I'm in the study…..& I've got a cheerful wood fire & four gas burners going…..It would be perfect if you were here to help me enjoy it, sweetheart….I hope you are reading & not half as lonesome as you were expecting to be' and concluding by referring to an important principle in the play of the cards during Bridge, 'I've been puzzling over it, and - but you better ask Whitmore, because I want to be certain about it - is it always second hand low, even when you haven't got a high card? - & if you do, what do you infer from it? Or do you infer at all, in that case? It being your partners turn to infer, likely. I wish I had brought the book along; several of those things are not clear to me'. Twain signs off the letter in an affectionate manner, 'Acres of love to you, my best & dearest, & love also to the kids, including Jean', and in a postscript returns to the decoration of their home, 'P.S. I'm going to get Mr. Beals to change that to God Bless Our Home. He said he would have to have a new motto; so that will do first rate for a novelty. It is to go over the front gate'. A letter of excellent content providing a superb glimpse of Mark Twain in his intimacy. VGOlivia Langdon Clemens (1845-1904) Wife of Samuel Langhorne Clemens from 1870. Livy, as she was known, assisted her husband with the editing of his books, articles and lectures and Twain once wrote of her "I am as proud of her brain as her beauty". The couple had three daughters, including Jean who had been born in July 1880.The extensive decorations to their home which Twain makes reference to in the present letter were in preparation of the visit of former United States President Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885) to Hartford on 16th October 1880. Grant was seeking the Republican presidential nomination for a third term and upon his train arriving in Hartford he found that 'the city was thronged with visitors…..and the streets were lined with decorations, not only along the line of march of the procession, but elsewhere'. Twain gave a welcoming address to Grant in which the writer declared 'Your country loves you. Your country is proud of you. Your country is grateful to you. Her applauses which have been thundering in your ears all these weeks and months, will never cease while the flag you saved continues to wave. Your country stands ready from this day forth to testify her measureless love and pride and gratitude toward you in every conceivable inexpensive way. Welcome to Hartford, great soldier, honoured statesman, unselfish citizen'.

Welles prepares to bring The Little Prince to the screen  [LITTLE PRINCE THE]: WELLES ORSON (1915-1985) American actor & film director, Academy Award winner. A significant D.S., Orson Welles, two pages (separate leaves), 4to, Los Angeles, California, 16th June 1943. The carbon typed document represents an agreement between Welles and Antoine de Saint-Exupery in which the French writer acknowledges receipt of the sum of $1250 from Welles, continuing 'I hereby give and grant to you the sole and exclusive right and option for the period of sixty (60) days from the date hereof to purchase all of the silent, sound and/or talking motion picture rights in and to my original story entitled “The Little Prince” for the total purchase price of Twelve Thousand Five Hundred Dollars ($12,500.00)….' and further setting out various terms and conditions in a number of clauses, in part, 'The rights to be granted to you in and to said story shall be the exclusive, complete and entire motion picture rights (including all sound and talking motion picture rights) in and to said literary material together with the right to televise direct from the motion picture photoplays to be produced based upon the said literary material (as distinguished from televising from living actors) for advertising and exploiting such motion picture photoplays and the right to broadcast by radio from the said literary material……You shall also have the right to reproduce in said motion picture photoplays any and/or all of the drawings contained in the book entitled “The Little Prince” as published…..' Signed by Welles in red fountain pen ink at the conclusion and countersigned by Maximilian Becker, Saint-Exupery's agent. With a further typed clause stapled to the first page, additionally signed by both Welles and Becker with their initials. Some light overall age wear, and a couple of very small tears to the left edge of the second page, otherwise VG Antoine de Saint-Exupery (1900-1944) French writer and pioneering aviator whose most successful work, The Little Prince, was first published in English and French in the United States by Reynal & Hitchcock in April 1943. Welles reputedly moved to secure the film rights for The Little Prince the day after reading Saint-Exupery's novella, and the young director, who had already made Citizen Kane, set about writing a screenplay. His intention was to make a live action film with animated sequences to represent interplanetary travel. In the 1940s this meant working with Walt Disney, the master of the genre, and the two men met to discuss the film. Welles brilliantly presented his vision, however Disney remained cold to the idea and apparently stormed out of the meeting declaring 'There's only room in this project for one genius'. And so the whole venture fell apart.

EINSTEIN ALBERT: (1879-1955) German-born theoretical physicist, Nobel Prize winner for Physics, 1921. An excellent scientific A.L.S., with his initials A. E., two pages, 4to, n.p., 5th March 1950, to Ernst Gabor Straus, in German, incorporating two lines of calculations. I do not agree with the opinion you expressed in your last letter. It is precisely in the nature of research that one must demand that all the tensors that can be produced by means of the….contraction disappear') and continues to explain, 'Ich bin davon uberzeugt, dass man dies verlangen muss, trotzdem es nun sehr unwahrscheinlich geworden ist, dass es drei zusatzliche Identitaten gibt. B. durch ein Hamilton-Prinzip erreichbar ist' (Translation: 'I am convinced that this should be required, even though it has now become very unlikely that there are three additional identities. If one demands compatible equations in the sense of a possibility of continuity of each cutting solution, then there are at least three formally equal systems of equations perceivable in the variation system, i.e. compatible in the usual sense, each of which is less natural than the strong system, and between which a choice cannot be made in a reasonable way. If the strong system should have so few solutions that the general solution is determined by a finite number of numerical parameters, then the strong system would of course not come into consideration as a physical theory. But then I would be convinced that the theory of the non-symmetrical field had to be abandoned altogether. But if the variety of the solutions of the strong system is not limited in this way, then the theory is, in my opinion, very promising. For it is plausible that the actual law of the field is more severely restricted in its solutions than it is, e.g. B. is achievable by a Hamilton principle) before concluding 'Dies ist durch die Quanten-Thatsachen sehr recht gelegt, die eben zeigen, dass die wahl der "Anfangsbedingungen" weitgehend eingeschrankt sein muss, was bei einem vollstandig durch ein variationsprinzip bestimmten gleichungssystem nicht der fall ist, wo eine erhebliche zahl von willkurlichen funktionen von drei variablen (fur die "Schnittlosung") frei bleibt. Das eigentliche problem liegt also darin, die mannigfaltigkeit der losungen des starken systems herauszufinden, hierein habe ich bis jetzt keinen erfolg gehabt' (Translation: 'This is very well justified by the quantum facts, which show precisely that the choice of "initial conditions" must be largely restricted, which is not the case for a system of equations completely determined by a variational principle, where a considerable number of arbitrary functions of three variables (for the "intersection solution") remains free. So the real problem lies in finding out the multiplicity of the solutions of the strong system, in which I have not had any success up to now'). Er lasst sich um Einfachsten so charakterisieren (his two lines of calculations inserted at this point) Bei dem andern "Beweis" ist es ganz entspechend' (Translation: 'In the new edition of the little book, which will be published soon, the blunder has been corrected. But I couldn't resist mentioning that it was you who discovered the error. It can be characterised in the simplest way (his two lines of calculations inserted at this point) In the case of the other 'proof', everything matches'). A letter of good association and fine scientific content. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VG Ernst Gabor Straus (1922-1983) German-American mathematician, a close associate of Einstein who collaborated with the physicist on their early work on relativity.  After publishing his papers on special relativity (1905) and general relativity (1916), Albert Einstein conducted research on quantum physics before working on the generalisation of the relativistic theory of gravitation. Einstein attempted to generalise his theory of gravitation to include electromagnetism as aspects of a single entity. In 1950, he described his 'unified field theory' in an article entitled On the Generalised Theory of Gravitation. Although he was lauded for this work, his efforts were ultimately unsuccessful. Notably, Einstein's unification project did not accommodate the strong and weak nuclear forces, neither of which was well understood until many years after his death. Although mainstream physics long ignored Einstein's approaches to unification, his work has motivated modern quests for a theory of everything.

LUFTWAFFE: Selection of A.Ls.S. and T.Ls.S. by various German Luftwaffe pilots of World War II comprising Karl-Heinrich Schulz (1906-1986) German Generalmajor, Knight's Cross winner. Two A.Ls.S., in one stating 'I know only some of the names you quote; but I do not know the addresses of any of these officers. I mush regret being of no help to you at all. But take into consideration the fact that 26 years have already gone by since the war ended. In that period, I have altered a lot of things', 1971; Friedrich Kless (1906-1994) German Generalmajor, Knight's Cross winner. Three A.Ls.S., in one stating 'There is a book, entitled 'Luftwaffe Encore', published by William Kimber of London, on one of my raids of that period in the Battle of Britain; it contains a picture of me, and is very fair and loyal', 1981; Hermann Dahlmann (1892-1978) German Generalleutnant, a fighter ace of World War I and influential aviation administrator during the Third Reich. A.L.S., Dahlmann, two pages, 4to, Prien, 13th September 1962, to an unidentified author, in German, discussing some photographs and stating, in part, 'The person erroneously described by you as Bulow is a war correspondent who stayed with us for 2 days only. A nice chap. I have forgotten his name. He was the one who suggested the photograph. Afterwards, a photograph was also taken of Goring and myself by a third person; this I still possess but cannot locate. But you are going to get it! The photograph you sent is also included in the book 'Air Aces'. I shall look forward with pleasure to your book on air aces…..You would certainly sell many more of these books if you were to insert in them a German translation of your article…..A piece of information which will interest you. Georg Ferchter, the writer on aviation, had died here in Prien, silently and unregarded. He was a recluse, lived entirely alone and self-centred with his books, letters and documents. He had been dead for days before his body was found. He left behind a vast quantity of material, in the field of the history of air warfare, in both world wars…..His literary remains have been sealed, now they must see to it that this mass of valuable papers is kept together'; Max Ibel (1896-1981) German Generalmajor and Knight's Cross winner, credited as one of the creators of the Luftwaffe. Group of six A.Ls.S. and one T.L.S., all in German and untranslated, each written to the aviation philatelist Hans Rossbach and with two carbon typed copies of his letters of reply; and Hermann Bruch (1893-1976) German Generalleutnant. T.L.S., H. Bruch, one page, oblong 8vo, Neustadt, 14th June 1971, to J. van Mastrigt, in German, sending his autograph and remarking 'I regret that I no longer have any photographs dating from the war period'. A few with file holes, otherwise generally VG, 16

TAVARES-BASTOS ANTONIO DIAS: (1900-1960) Brazilian poet. Manuscript D.S., A. D. Tavares Bastos, one page, 4to, n.p., n.d., in French. Tavares-Bastos responds to a researcher's questionnaire entitled Enquete Mondiale ('World Enquiry') with their questions at the head of the page, '1. Were your literary beginnings happy or difficult? 2. Did a means of existence (a second profession or personal wealth) allow you to exist as a Man of Letters, or was it just income from your pen? 3. What book made you most famous? Which do you consider your masterpiece?' Tavares-Bastos provides his answers to the first two questions immediately beneath, explaining that his literary beginnings were difficult due to bad teachers and that he owes everything to his self-education, and further adding that unfortunately he had no personal fortune and that more than ever now literature does not generate enough income to feed a man.
