Edward Backhouse Jnr. (1808-1879), bound collection of etchings of birds, circa 1840, with index listing the 32 plates. Bound in full calf by Dresser & Sons of Darlington, in fine condition. NB: Edward Backhouse Jnr. was the son of Edward Backhouse (1781-1860) philanthropist and founder of the Sunderland branch of the Backhouse Bank, his uncle, Jonathan Backhouse (1779-1842) is famed for his backing of the Stockton to Darlington railway. This privately published book is very rare; only about half a dozen copies are known and every copy varies, it is not in the British Library, this copy is by family descent from the Backhouse familyNo title page. Contents complete as specified in the index. Some cracking to leather binding, particularly the spine, contents generally in good condition with very minor time staining
