Named after the German artist, Hans Holbein the Younger, who is known for his detailed and realistic portrait paintings, the jewellery is characterized by its intricate, highly ornate designs, often featuring enamel work, gemstones, and intricate gold or silver metalwork. This can be recognised by a large centrally placed cabochon gem, an engraving or inlay mounted in gold with coloured enamels. The back of each piece is often meticulously carved using scroll and foliage decoration.John Brogden and his colleague, Carlo Giuliano often copied jewellery depicted in Holbein's portraits of Tudor ladies from the court of Henry VIII. Other jewellery houses that produce Holbeinesque jewellery include Jules Wièse, Boucheron, Chaumet, and Vever. The metalwork in Holbeinesque jewellery was typically ornate and detailed, with intricate filigree, granulation, and scrollwork. The designs were often inspired by Renaissance and Gothic art, incorporating elements such as arches, columns, and floral motifs. Gemstones, such as diamonds, pearls, and coloured gemstones, were also commonly used to enhance the overall aesthetic.Holbeinesque jewellery was highly fashionable during the Victorian era, particularly during the mid-1800s, as it captured the romantic and nostalgic spirit of the time. Queen Victoria herself was known to be a fan of this style, and her influence helped popularize it. These pieces were often given as tokens of love, making them cherished heirlooms within families.Today, Holbeinesque jewellery pieces are highly sought after by collectors and antique enthusiasts. Their craftsmanship, historical significance, and timeless beauty continue to captivate those with an appreciation for intricate and meaningful adornments. The legacy of Holbeinesque jewellery lives on as a testament to the enduring appeal of finely crafted, sentimental jewellery from the past. He became renowned for this fine workmanship and was sought after by the elite French jewellery houses such as Van Cleef & Arpels, Boucheron, Fred Paris and Mauboussin. Together with Gérard, they created exquisite jewellery pieces for more than twenty years.Frenchman Louis Gérard worked for many years for the world-famous house of Van Cleef & Arpels before making the decision to establish a maison of his own in 1968. Thus, the house of M Gérard was born and opened its doors for the first time at 8 Avenue Montaigne in Paris.Gérard worked primarily with the Atelier Vassort workshop producing magnificent suites of jewellery of the highest quality and craftsmanship and lavishly decorated with diamonds and precious gems. A character with a large personality, Gérard delighted in throwing fabulously stylish parties from Cannes to Monte Carlo, for the jet-setting elite he proudly called clients. His boutiques were situated in London, Lausanne, Monte Carlo and Gstaad, an upscale resort town in the Swiss Alps. However, the rapid expansion and extravagant entertaining budget sadly proved unsustainable and in 1985, Gérard was forced to sell out to a group of American investors. He later succeeded in re-gaining his company and re-launched under the name of Louis Gérard, Joaillier International but this success was short-lived and by 1991, the firm was forced once again to shut its doors.Today, pieces from the prestigious house continue to be highly sought after for their magnificent quality. A number of pieces by the house appeared as highlights of The Royal House Sale at Christies Geneva in November 2006, one of the top ten most expensive private jewellery collections ever sold at auction. An Art Deco carved emerald, sapphire and diamond jardinière brooch, circa 1930, the vase formed from a pear-shaped emerald bead, weighing 13.60 carats, carved to both sides with an undulating pattern, with vari-shaped step-cut diamond detailing, the whole issuing a tree with brilliant-cut diamond foliage and fruits set with buff-top sapphires and vari-cut diamonds, mounted in platinum, unsigned, French assay mark, numbered ‘3563’, cased by Boucheron, total diamond weight very approximately 8.00 carats, length 6cm. £10,000-£15,000 --- Accompanied by a report from The Gem and Pearl Laboratory. Please contact the department for further details. During the early decades of the 20th century the use of carved Mughal emeralds in contemporary jewellery reflected the growing fascination of master jewellers with the decorative arts of India. Louis Boucheron and Jacques Cartier, amongst others, were charmed by the ‘exotic’ arts and splendour of India and frequently visited seeking commissions and purchasing gemstones for their Western clients. These Indian-inspired jewels were particularly popular amongst British clientele due to the Imperial interests of the country at the time. The cultural fascination between the two continents was, however, reciprocal and the Indian nobility regularly travelled to Europe, visiting Boucheron, Cartier and other firms, to have their historical jewels remodelled into contemporary designs. This brooch encapsulates several influences and innovations of the period, not only through the use of an Indian carved emerald bead but also in the Japanese-inspired motif of the Bonsai tree. The fascination with non-European cultures also extended to the arts of China and Japan. Oriental motifs were readily incorporated into designs and the brooch offered here exemplifies the Japanese influence on the traditional European giardinetto brooch. Advancements in cutting techniques also enabled the fine jewellery houses of the period to combine vari-cut gemstones and create the defining geometric shapes of the era. Literature: Nadelhoffer H., ‘Cartier’, London 1984, pub. Thames & Hudson. Néret, G., ‘Boucheron, Four Generations of a World-Renowned Jeweler’, New York, 1988, pub. Rizzoli.
