Foreign Orders & Decorations - Königreich beider Sizilien : Order of Saint Ferdinand and the Merit Breast Star to the Grand Cross.Silver breast star features the image of Saint Ferdinand and is sculpted in superb goldsmith's craftsmanship. The motto's ring is crafted in gold and enamel parts. The entire body of the star and the Fleur de Lys are studded with polished marcasite stones. The reverse of the Star features a curved double pin for attaching to a robe, i.e. uniform. The other breast stars from the royal Sicilian family and from the estate of the Kings of the Two Sicilies reflect the same design and quality. They are to be found in the collection of Dr. Spada and are exhibited in the Museum of the Legion of Honour in Paris. The production of breast stars studded with marcasite was a fashion, which is to be found especially in Naples at the end of the 18th century. These insignia were made almost exclusively on behalf of the Kings and princes of the House of Bourbon - Sicily. However, the preference for these exceedingly magnificent orders seems to have persisted until the Napoleonic period. A Grand Cross of the Napoleonic Royal Order of Two Sicilies worn by Joachim Murat is executed in this technique. Various honorary Sabres with Markasite trim were also produced for King Joachim. The Kings of the Two Sicilies had a set of all their order stars made in this fashion. These specimens from the Sicilian royal house, are very similar to the one offered at auction and are in the collection of Dott. Antonio Spada. They are featured in exhibition catalog of the Paris Musée National de la Légion d'honneur et des Ordres de Chévalerie (Ed.): Honneur & Gloire - Les Trésors de La Collection Spada, P. 134 Illustrated and described. Some breast stars of the late 18th century, made of polished steel, are closely related to these breast stars. Very few splendid examples of Russian, English and German breast stars produced in this technique are known in museums and private collections. The fashion of polished steel jewelry was a widespread phenomenon throughout Europe probably due to the extreme rarity of diamonds at the time before the large diamond deposits were discovered in South Africa in the 19th century. Order insignia produced in steel or marcasite style are among the most artistically beautiful goldsmith creations in the field of orders and awards. Major religious star of greatest rarity.

An Nadel. Prachtexemplar in ganz besonders feiner, plastischer sizilianischer Goldschmiedearbeit. Foreign Orders & Decorations - Königreich beider Sizilien : Order of Saint George of the Reunion: Breast Star to the Grand Cross with Sceptres for the Grand Master.Silver breast star features a separately applied cross and a gold and enameled medallion. The reverse fitted with pin for wearing. With maker's signature: "AUG=to Heider di DRESDA Fe: NAPOLI 1829". Star shows minor wear and minor chips to the blue enamel but, overall in beautiful condition. Magnificent breast star probably worn by King Francis I. (1825.1830) . Only the kings of the Two Sicilies as Grand Masters of the order were entitled to wear the insignia with sceptres instead of the regular swords. Particularly fine, sculptural goldsmith's craftsmanship. The medallion is constructed in three parts. This military order of Saint George of the Reunion, founded in 1819, was only awarded rarely, especially in the higher classes. The Grand cross was only awarded to generals who had distinguished themselves during war time. Only the King of the two Sicilies as grand master had the right to wear insignia with sceptres. Only a few such breast stars from the various Kings from the House of Bourbon of the Two Sicilies are known to exist. This breast star is one of the greatest rarities among the awards of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies and one of the most important Italian pieces of order insignia offered at auction in recent years. Only a few examples are known of in in private collections.

A cadet Bourbon branch, the House of Orléans, then ruled for 18 years (1830–1848), until it too was deposed.Louis Philippe Joseph, Duc de Orléans (1747–1793), known as 'Philippe Égalité' and Louise Marie Adélaïde Penthièvre (1753-1821) were married at the Palace of Versailles in 1769. At the time of their marriage, Marie Adélaïde was the wealthiest heiress in France. The couple were much in love and had three sons and twin daughters but during the Reign of Terror, the couple were torn apart and the fate of their family was cast into peril. After a long period in exile, their eldest child, Louis Philippe (1773-1850) would eventually become the penultimate monarch of France (1830-1848), but not before his two younger brothers contracted tuberculosis while imprisoned with their father at Fort-Saint-Jean in Marseille. Their father was guillotined in 1793 and their mother exiled to Spain. Louis Antoine (1775-1807) and Louis Charles (1779–1808) later died of their condition within a year of each other - Louis Antoine while in exile in England and Louis Charles while visiting Malta.Their sister, Françoise, died in 1782, aged four and was survived by her younger twin, Louise Marie Adélaïde Eugénie (1777–1847). Once King, Louis Philippe came to rely heavily on his sister's intelligence, wisdom and loyalty, consulting her daily on both family matters and affairs of state. Raised a liberal by her governess, 'Madame Adélaïde' supported the idea of a constitutional monarchy and a representative government. Louis Philippe's reign, known as the 'July Monarchy', was dominated by wealthy industrialists and bankers. He promoted friendship with Great Britain and sponsored colonial expansion, notably the French conquest of Algeria. His popularity faded as economic conditions in France deteriorated. Madame Adélaïde died two months before his abdication on 24th February 1848. Louis Philippe spent the remainder of his life in exile in England. His supporters were known as Orléanists. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: Y ФY Subject to CITES regulations when exporting items outside of the EU, see clause 13.Ф This lot contains or is made of ivory and cannot be imported into the USA or any country within the EU.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

A cadet Bourbon branch, the House of Orléans, then ruled for 18 years (1830–1848), until it too was deposed. This portrait miniature derives from a portrait of 1785, now at Versailles, by the French state painter and pastellist, Joseph Boze. It was engraved by Benoit Louis Henriquez, the court engraver, and in London by Thomas Curtis. It was used again by the court miniaturist, Pierre Violet, in a portrait showing 'The Unfortunate Louis 16th in the Dress he wore while confined in the Temple', which was engraved by Francesco Bartolozzi and published in London in February 1793, the month after King Louis was sent to the guillotine. With the bulldozers lurking at the distillery gate, and little hope for its future, very few casks were being filled and laid down. These bottlings are a testament to the faith of those who persevered with the operation, and are bottled in honour of the Ardbeg Committee whose mandate is to ensure the distillery never experiences such fears for its existence again. The ex-bourbon casks were distilled in the spring of 1996 in the still that now sits monumentally outside the distillery gates, and they were bottled in July 2018”
