A MASSIVE CHINESE BRONZE FIGURE OF BUDDHA SHAKYAMUNI XUANDE 1426-35 Seated in dhyanasana, his left hand upturned, the right touching the ground, wearing long flowing robes with floral borders, elaborate bracelets, a necklace, a tall tiara and long earrings, his elongated earlobes framing his face with downcast eyes bearing a serene expression, raised on a double lotus throne, the surface with traces of gilding and polychrome decoration, 54cm, 17kg. Provenance: from the collection of Sir Framjee Dinshaw Maneckji Petit, 3rd Baronet (1901-1983) and Lady Sylla Dinshaw Petit (née Tata), purchased by Sir Dinshaw Petit, along with a jade bowl and a Blance de Chine figure from John Sparks Ltd. in London on the 31st July 1957 for £30, It is described as 'An old Chinese bronze figure of a Bodhisattva, lacquered in black and gold. 18th century.' A copy of this invoice is available. Cf. The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, Buddhist Statues of Tibet, vol.60, p.229, no.218 for a figure of Amitabha in similar style. AN INDIAN OR CENTRAL ASIAN PALE CELADON JADE BOWL 17TH/18TH CENTURY The body divided into wide ribs between rows of stylised lotus flowerheads, with four gold leaf-shaped appliques, the sides with two palmetto-shaped handles, all supported on a circular, gently flared foot. The base with a paper label inscribed: 'taken from the Kaiserbagh or New Palace Lucknow by a Sergeant H.M. 20 Regiment under gen Franks' and '1857', 18.5cm. Provenance: from the collection of Mrs S W Shaw, d.1957, Berkshire, and thence by descent. General Sir Thomas Harte Franks (1808-1862) was a Colonel and a CB in March 1858 at the time of the capture of Lucknow by the British troops. He was in command of a formation that included the 20th regiment. As a result of the action, on 5th June 1858 Sir Frank was promoted to Major-General and elevated to KCB. The date '1857' on the label is incorrect, as at the time the 20th was not involved around Lucknow. Cf. A RARE CHINESE FAMILLE ROSE CANTON ENAMEL TEA SERVICE 18TH CENTURY Each piece finely painted with gilt and coloured enamels with Magu and He Xiangu with an attendant ascending into heaven accompanied by a phoenix, the rims with bands of pink diaper, the reverse with sprays of fruit and flowers. Comprising: two circular plates, a hexagonal teapot stand, a bowl, a teapot with an associated cover, a milk jug, eleven saucers, five tea bowls and six coffee cups, 22.2cm max.
