Lot 398

An interesting wheel-lock pistol dating: 17th Century provenance: Tuscany Smooth, octagonal, 15 mm cal. barrel; engraved tang; lock with flat and smooth plate with external wheel, the frame of the wheel and the hammer both chiselled with floral motifs in Tuscan style, special spring with two plates, stronger than usual ones, at the the inside the crowned stamp "BP" enclosed in a oval; briarwood full stock with iron inlays pierced with stars; iron belt hook; iron-tipped wooden ramrod. Although at first glance the pistol looks Brescian, it has most probably been manufactured in Tuscany. See the manuscript by Antonio Petrini and "Brescian Fire Arms" by Nolfo di Carpegna, plate XVI. The spring of the hammer has double action (the lower arms of the spring works when the upper one stops). Work of fine technique, state of the art in that times. The stamp "BP" most probably refers to Bernardo Paratici (1589-1640); Paratici worked in Florence and Brescia, this pistol with "less" Brescian features, probably belongs to his Florence period. For the mark see Gaibi "Armi da fuoco italiane", on the inside plate of a wheel-lock pistol (no. 98) and on a Brescian hand gun (no. 101). dimensions: length 50 cm.
