A rare 17th Century oak and ash turned open arm chairThe substantial turned top rail supported on a central baluster turned upright, above a triform oak panelled seat supported on two substantial ring turned front legs each with a knopped terminal and raised on ring incised front feet.NB: The chair was removed from The Red Lion pub at Malpas, where it was renowned for it's history within the pub. 94cm high. A late 18th Century oak and mahogany crossbanded thirty hour longcase clock, Barker of WiganHaving a 11" silvered bezel painted with Roman and Arabic numerals enclosing a silvered subsidiary second dial and a date aperture, the dial embraced by applied scrolling leafy openwork spandrels and with a thirty hour movement striking on a saucer bell, the case with a flat top above a blind fretwork frieze and a pair of tapering turned cylindrical columns flanking the glazed hood door, above a shaped and crossbanded door, flanked by quarter ring turned columns over a conforming crossbanded lower panel, raised on ogee bracket feet, 213cm high with one weight and pendulum. A small 17th century bronze skillet by Thomas Palmar of Canterbury, the handle signed 'THO PALMAR', with an angular brace, on moulded tripod legs, the underside with a printed label inscribed 'HORNSBY COLLECTION', 16.4cm high, 23.9cm long. A 16th Century German shield, the 56cm diameter heavy gauge slightly convex body rising to a square section spike finial, dished edge surrounded by domed rivets with embossed foliate brass washers, one lacking and two partial, eight further domed brace rivets with washers to match, two lacking and one partial, some lamination to the reverse. Struck with an Armourer's mark towards the facing edge.
CHAMBERLAIN NEVILLE: (1869-1940) British Prime Minister 1937-40. A.L.S., N. Chamberlain, two pages, 8vo, Great Durnford, Salisbury, 19th May 1932, to Douglas Vickers. Chamberlain thanks his correspondent for their letter which arrived that morning and continues to comment 'Since then my wife has sent a message to tell you of my misfortune. I am in bed here with a huge toe which I am unable to put to the ground and which throbs & stabs unceasingly', also adding that he is bitterly disappointed as he 'had been looking forward with the greatest eagerness to my first experience of the Test. But it is obviously impossible to expect that I could be well enough to fish on Saturday and I can only hope….that you will have time enough to secure another angler….' Together with Anne Chamberlain (1883-1967, Wife of Neville Chamberlain) A.L.S., Anne Chamberlain, two pages, 4to, Edgbaston, Birmingham, 31st August n.y., to Mrs. Vickers. Chamberlain thanks her correspondent and husband for a gift of grouse ('timed for my husband's return from Ottawa!'), explaining that they had one brace last night and the other that evening, and further adding 'Perhaps we may meet at the Blackpool Conference, but if not we shall look forward to seeing you both in London…' Also including a second, brief A.L.S., Anne Chamberlain, one page, 8vo, Eaton Square, London, 6th December n.y., also to Mrs. Vickers, accepting an invitation to lunch. VG, 3 Douglas Vickers (1861-1937) English Industrialist & Politician, director of the famous firm Vickers, Sons & Co. Ltd., the British engineering firm associated with car and aircraft manufacture. Vickers married Katherine Chetwynd.
A RARE GEORGE III SILVER AND RED LEATHER DOG BRACE LEASH with steel buckles, inscribed William Wynne Sparrow Red Hill Beaumaris Carnarvon Hunt 1817, 87cm l, by George Lowe I, Chester 1816 Provenance: W W Sparrow served as High Sheriff of Anglesey in 1822 and was five times Mayor of Beaumaris between 1819 and 1832. A kinsman, James Sparrow, was Secretary of the management committee which oversaw the building of the Triumphal Arch on Holyhead pier designed by Thomas Harrison of Chester to commemorate the visit of George IV in 1821 (see lot 71). Redhill House is the seat of the Bulkeley Williams family and was acquired on the bankruptcy of the then Sparrow occupier, around 1850. George Lowe I (1768-1841) registered his mark at the Chester Assay Office in 1791, shortly after having done so in London. He enjoyed a long connection with the Bateman family of silversmiths for whom he acted as their agent in Chester. He served as Warden and for a time Assay Master at Chester and catered to an illustrious local clientele. ++A rare and interesting object complete and in fine condition with some natural fraying and wear to the leather consistent with the age but acceptable
A Geo horn bugle, facetted and curved with bands towards darkwood mouthpiece, engraved band at (worn) open end, the body engraved with 1801-16 R Arms, supporters and motto, and rhyme “Arouse jolly Bacchus the horn to embrace, ‘Twill cheer up the spirits to follow the chase. It will brace up the nerves the game to pursue, And cause the bold huntsman to sound the halloo”, 14” overall. GC for age (some wear) Plate 5
